There isn't any gulag in Russia. In fact, they ceased to exist in the USSR after Gorbachev came to power. The Chinese companies employing people at low wages for US companies (think Apple) can be compared to gulags. Not sure about North Korea. No reliable news comes out of that country anyway.

Yes, they ceased to exist after Gorbachev's time. That's what I meant - Gulags like the Stalinist ones.

Information coming out of North Korea is so scarce that it is very difficult to form an accurate understanding of that country. Of course, it could be argued that such a closed society is itself indicative of an oppressive state.

There is a steady trickle of information. There are defectors from NK, escapees from the camps, etc. There are people like a Nepali eye doctor who travels worldwide to provide free treatment to patients. That doctor's documentary is available on the internet. There are people who have gone in via UN aid missions, etc.

Even Benazir Bhutto who went to NK in the 90s to beg for missile blueprints (under the instructions of General Mirza Aslam Beg) was struck by how artificial the facade of NK was, and how much misery and deprivation is in the background.

The average North Korean is almost 7 inches shorter and 15 kg lighter than his South Korean counterpart. Having the same genetics, this massive difference inflicted upon the North Korean populace within 5 generations is astounding.

This is the best time to point fingers at them.. Heard of PIIGS? they are the spendthrifts, where the govt spent a lot of money on useless things like health care and social securities, beyond what they could afford. This is what happening in India in the name of subsidies-spending beyond what we can afford. This neo-socialism is the reason for the west suffering from the crisis, not because of the free market.

Western economies are not struggling because "capitalism" is bad, they're struggling precisely because "capitalism" brought Asian countries the opportunity to catch up with the West... Talking about defeating them at heir own game.
