So is the F4 Phantom. The carrier aircraft does not depend on the wing shape or design. The Carrier aircrafts must carry a decent weapon load climb up fast and intercept the incoming threat be it by sea or by air. In case of India and China the Aircraft carriers are for fleet defense, Strike is secondary. So a delta wing is a far more compatibile design for quick climb and interception. smaller size and large number of decent aircraft are better.
very reasonable.but I'm not sure if strike is considering secondary.you know ,the most important reason why China develop AC is that we need the AC to protect our territory in the south sea .the potential enemy is some country like Vietnam, when faceing the Vietnam's SU30,I don't think light class flighter like J10 can fix this job easily even if with the support of other ships in fleet like 052C.Besides I don't think the duty of flighters in Chinese CA should be limited in fleet defense, you know Chinese fleet lack the aerodynamic missile to attack the target on land,so we also need heavy class flighter to do a long-distance attacking mission.

Well for that first you need good numbers. Facing Vietnam might be good Fighting bigger countries it might sound useless...

first thing that came to my mind seeing the title of the thread is what is this fighter going to be based on? China has no carriers and will not have for quite sometime.

Catapulting a 30 tonne aircraft cant be done that easily. You need to have the proper resources and materials for it. Absorbing a technology like catapult operation and maintainence is a totally different task. Okay the French and the Brits have built catapults long time back. Why should they buy American ones now?...think over it.
I agree with you on the point that it's difficult job to develop Catapult, but China have started researching of those technology 20 or more years ago.buying a catapult type and geting help from other country is definitly easier than developing by ourself from zero.but who can claim it won't come true just like nuclear weapon or satellite developing in chinese history? There's a strange scene in china that ,every field that can get help and technology from ours,we may have a difficult beginning, but a wonderful consequence.to the contrary, many fields we can easy get help ,we can't do well .there's the reason why no Chinese firm in Auto industry is better than "TATA"

Why bring TATA into this?...and We operated Vikrant the similar one to Melbourne before you and it carried the Sea Hawker hunter. It also had a catapult INS Vikrant...Ring any bells? same class carrier. The functioning of a modern catapult is totally different copared to it.

I work in the field of AUTO industry.I just think TATA has much advantages compare with many Chinese lazying and unresearching firms.that's just a unintentional saying.
I take the Melbourne as a example just wanna to express that China have researched this technology for a long time.not means the Catapult on Melbourne is the basic of Chinese research.time is going, china must have absorbed much new technology, and thanks to the reform,China have leaded a huge improvement in the fields of material, electricity, electron and something else,it's definitly possible for China to develp a morden catapult system.

You still dont have a floating Flight deck to design a catapult not the boiler. you cant build a flight deck around a catapult...you build a catapult inside a flight deck.

Why do u want to ditch this sensible discussion? And where are u planning to get the catapult from?
I don't think that catapult will be a problem.....

chinese engineers started R&D of catapult decades ago.

when generals of PLA declared that no tech barrier holds back the construction of AC last year, the R&D of catapult had be finished already....:stinker:.

wait a minute how can you build a catapult without flight deck?...you people must have simulated it that is all. the catapult is the last piece of equipment to be put on the AC hull. Without the AC how did u people build a catapult?

guy, do you know anything called labs and advanced research?

the take off with the help of the catapult can be simulated on land.
all that is valuable is the data of all kinds of tests...

Russia tested its navy bird and catapult on land long before its big AC rolled out.

we do have the floating Flight deck, remember there's a mid-size AC anchoring in DaLian port which is same type to the Russian only AC ?PLA have been rebuilding it for years.but to be honest, the structure of it is not designed for cataplute system, but we always can do some test on it.I must admin it's possible that chinese first generation AC don't have the cataplute system. But ,China will keep on researching it since it come out.

So you still dont have the catapult and are still researching it. Russia's catapult didnt go as well as it was expected. That is why the Kuznetsov didnt have the Catapult.
