The Next Wahhabist State? Maldives and Saudi Arabia Sign Religious Deal

BY P.ANTONOPOULOS ON NOVEMBER 19, 2015 | Al-Masdar News

The Maldives are heading towards becoming a Wahhabist country, a puritanical interpretation of Islam only seen in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The Maldives Islamic minister, Dr Ahmed Ziyad Bagir, signed a religious cooperation agreement along with his Saudi Arabian counterpart Salih ibn Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad Al Al-Shaykh on Thursday.

Through the cooperation, Saudi Arabia would help the Maldives strengthen its alms system, translate religious books to the local Dhivehi language and facilitate the exchange of visits by religious scholars of both countries.

The Maldives minister stated: “By the grace of God, this agreement will also expedite the work on the mosques that are being constructed with assistance from Saudi Arabia. We’ll also be able to improve the standard of Imams.”

Article 9, Section D of the Maldives constitution states: “that a non-Muslim may not become a citizen of the Maldives.”

As well as constructing many mosques, Riyadh has also provided scholarship opportunities to Maldivian students annually to undertake courses religious studies.

King Salman had visited the Maldives both as the crown prince last year and after taking over the throne following the death of his half-brother Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in January emphasising the strong relations.

Some members had suggested that india should bomb ISIS. While in principle this might be a good cause, the recent Russian jet downing incident shows how difficult it would be if something like that happened to an Indian plane. As someone correctly suggested, India should consider being more interventionist in Maldives. This is turning into another Wahhabi den.

What do members think?

P.S.: Please, no hate speech.

I already suggested sending out INS Viraat and block this island nation. But its already too late.

These guys will sell their islands to China and will be openly hostile to India very soon.

As a south Asian Muslim perhaps I can humbly venture to give some ideas.

1. Saudi Arabia and Wahabism is a threat to humanity including Muslims as well.

2. In order to avoid offending local Muslim sentiment in the Maldives the GOI (Government of India) should covertly lobby for the Maldives to align themselves with Egypt and its more moderate Al-Azhar institution for theological, religious training rather than the Wahabis of Saudi Arabia.

3. To be honest though the Maldives is not much of a security threat to India and a bit of a non-entity, it could even be flooded in the future. However the GOI could make it discreetly known to the Saudis that they regard the Maldives as part of India's zone of influence/interest just as the Saudis regard Syria/Yemen/Egypt (Arab countries) as theirs, and in turn for India overlooking this Saudi intrusion Saudi could be nice by making up for this with favours elsewhere.

It's up to GOI to decide what to do for India's interests and no one elses, but if making this known to the Saudis doesn't result in any damage, why not try.

Also the GOI permanently stationing a nuclear submarine not too far from Saudi Arabia would send Riyadh a gentle little message of India's capabilities.

*wink*
