Hahahaha.... if you're referring to these, No, those are not bullet proof vests. My guess is that they're something else, probably floats of some kind for when crossing dangerous passes.@ rage what are those square boxes on the chest of soldiers in the 5th picture?is this the only crap indian military got to protect the lives of their boys?any way nice pics...
On the issue of Bullet Proof vests, however, the Indian Army still needs a serious upgrade. The guy on the left is wearing an OFB-issue BPJ, which offers level III protection and uses hard armoured steel. The vest weighs in at a colossal 10 kgs. Most of the world today is moving towards ceramic and silicon / boron carbides for standard armoured plates and/ or tungsten disulfide / carbon nanotubes for textile armour. Truly, the Army guys are given shit and they don't complain, doing their job and managin' to come out on top.
The standard Army issue could still do with a major overhaul in terms of weight reduction, Everything from bottles to backpacks.
That said, the Indian Army in Siachen is still better equipped than its Pakistani counterparts. This is a picture of Pakistani troops in the Siachin area from very, very recently:
