So India plans to go on war with Chinese or even Pakistanis with that substandard equipment?

Got it. Seriously we are so under equipped. Can any one tell cost of equipments per soldier we have?? An American soldier is equipped with 2k-3k dollars worth equipments i guess

ZERO equipment upgradation for 10-12 years had the Indian infantry stuck at '90s... but as some others have pointed out, the soldiers at LoC & Kashmir already look a lot different now! Interestingly much higher priority is being given to the western troops.

Sick camo the bagpacks though, should've been on their bodies instead.

The game has changed now. Indian Infantry (the entire 435 Battalions of Indian Infantry + the 50 Battalions of Mechanised Infantry) are all set to get NATO soldier level equipment. Here is the RFI:-

The entire current Improved Combat Kit (ICK) that is issued to a soldier is set to change by 2025. Till now, ICK was manufactured by OFB. This RFI is calling for private companies to manufacture this kit.

Excerpts:-

The present ICK is of old pattern, cumbersome and has restricted operational utility. There is a need for holistic review of ICK towards making it operationally useful and in keeping with the modernization needs.

Improved Combat Kit (ICK) is authorised to a soldier as a part of personal equipment. ICK consists of the following equipment:- (a) Pouches Ammunition. (b) Belt Waist. (c) Haversack. (d) Pack 08. (e) Flex Water Bottle Plastic with Cover.

Battle Carrier Vest with Integral Pouches (Replacement of Existing Pouches Ammunition).
(a) Size. It should be available in four different sizes (M, L, XL & XXL) with flexibility to adjust length & width for any individual. It should have broad straps so as to distribute the weight of load across the torso of soldier.
(b) Integral Pouches. Since scaling of weapon, ammunition & equipment is different for various appointments, the following is recommended based on Modular Light Weight Load Carrying Equipment (MOLLE) webbing system:-
(i) Six Magazines pouches (for magazines, grenade, Radio Sets, sights, GPS etc). Preference on sides so as not to hinder movement.
(ii) Two drop bags (Bty Bino, Med pouch etc).
(iii) One Bottle bag.
(iv) One Pistol Holster.
(v) Four zip compartments (two small near chest and two big near abdomen).
(vi) Straps for tightening of pouches to minimize shaking/noise during movement.
(c) BPJ Plates. Individual should be able to insert/remove BPJ plates in front & rear of the vest when required.
(d) Additional Features:-
(i) The equipment should have additional hooks/straps at the bottom & to the sides both in the vest & pouches for attachment of additional modules/bags including hydration pack.
(ii) The facility of quick release with good quality metallic push buttons to be made available. Velcro is not recommended.

RFI also specifies everything else including haversacks, belt, big pack and hydration systems.

We have only started paying attention (more than just lip service) to the sorry state of affairs in the Infantry kit after General Bipin Rawat came to the helm. Give the system a couple more years. Next decade is going to change the face of Indian Armed Forces.

The insas had alot of issues with the length of Barrell and the ammo. The 1C was deemed an increment too late with limited further upgrade path. Made little sense to invest int he 1C and then look for another rifle in the short period of time.

(This ofcourse has nothing to do with the bungled small arms procurement process)

Say what??!!Dude, the barrel length of 18.6" or so in INSAS is ideal for an assault rifle to be used in conventional warfare!!It's pretty much the only thing they got right about this rifle.

Say what??!!Dude, the barrel length of 18.6" or so in INSAS is ideal for an assault rifle to be used in conventional warfare!!It's pretty much the only thing they got right about this rifle.

The issues with INSAS was that the ammo needed a longer burn time (hence even longer Barrell)

That is why the LMG insas didnt havr any of the problems that the AR did.
