On June 15th, 2013, the ancient deity of Dhari Devi was removed from her temple to be shifted to another location to facilitate the construction of a dam, which locals were opposing ever since the conception of the project with the belief that the moving of the Dhari Devi would somehow agitate Kali. Exactly on the next day a massive cloudburst and flash flood started in Uttarakhand, which devastated Kedarnath, washing the city completely away.

This may sound like a story from a comic book, but it is not so – its reality that most people today like to ignore and push aside as superstition. The fury of the goddess is well known and any attempt to instigate her would lead to great destruction. Let us look at the events leading to the great devastation of Uttarakhand by flooding of Uttar Kashi.

The government has tried to build up dams to overcome the power shortage in the country. This has been opposed by locals and some prominent politicians like Uma Bharti and B. C. Khanduri of the BJP since it would lead to the submergence of the temple of Dhari Devi. As a result efforts to construct dams have been delayed indefinitely. Previously, in 1882, an attempt to shift the Dhari Devi shrine was immediately followed by havoc in Kedar Valley. There is some strange connection between these guardian goddess and the Kedarnath jyotirliñga.

The Joint Temples

These are not just any other Shakti temples, they are among the 108 Shakti Pitha mentioned in the Devi Bhagavat. Dhari Devi is a temple on the banks of the Alakananda River in the Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand state, India. It houses the upper half of a deity of goddess Kali specifically called "Dhari Devī" that, according to local lore, changes in appearance during the day from a girl, to a woman, and then to an old lady. Perched atop a 20 metre high rock, the temple of Dhari Devi is situated on the banks of river Alakananda. One has to travel a distance of 19km from Srinagar (Pauri Garhwal) on Srinagar-Badrinath highway upto Kaliya Saur, then down trek another half a kilometer towards Alakananda river.

According to a local legened, the temple was once washed off by floods, while floating the idol struck against a rock, the villagers heard the cries of the idol. On reaching the site they heard a divine voice instructing them to install the idol as it was, on the spot it was found. Since then the fierce looking idol remains where it was, known as Dhari Devi, under the open sky, and thousands of devotees on the way to Badrinath pay their obeisance to it. The temple of Dhari Devi in Srinagar hosts only the upper part of the deity of Godess Dhari, the remaining lower part is believed to be in Kalimath in Rudraprayag district.

It is believed that the idol of Dhari Devi shall not be put under a roof. For the same reason, the deities in Dhari Devi Temple are put under open sky. Taking photographs of the Dhari Devi deities are strictly prohibited. The village near the temple is name after godess Dhari and known as Dhari Village. A hanging bridge over Alaknanda river connects the Dhari Devi temple to Dhari Village.

Now, the lower half of the idol of Kali is located in Kalimath Temple. These joint temples are aligned exactly at NE-SW direction (see adjoining image) symbolizing Kali as sleeping with her feet in NE direction and head in the SE direction.

This causes the energy to flow in the NE direction, which in jyotiṣa, is the direction of Jupiter (Ishana Shiva), the parameṣṭhi guru. The upper part of the devi with the head symbolizes the calming of Kali by Shiva, the Guru. The lower part of Kali is not in the form of an idol and instead, is worshipped as the Sri Yantra. In this manner we learn that the Sri Yantra, as established by Adi Shankara at Kalimath, is the yoni of Shakti from which all creation proceeds.

The Kedarnath jyotirlinga is exactly North from Kalimath (see adjoining image) symbolising the husband-wife or Shiva-Shakti relationship. In this, Kedarnath being to the north (Mercury direction for ahimsa) is constantly calming the devi who is in the south (Mars direction, anger, agitated and at war).

On June 15th, 2013, the deity of Dhari Devi was removed from her ancient temple to be shifted to another location to facilitate the construction of the same dam (a 330 megawatt hydro electric project which now stands in ruins), which locals were opposing ever since the conception of the project with the belief that the moving of the Dhari Devī would somehow agitate Kali. They were right in their belief as any movement would lead to a change in the angle of the Dhari Devi and Kalimath alignment, besides altering the distance. There are energies we human beings do not understand as yet and it is best to let these spiritual shrines where these energies are contain, be maintained.

With the shifting of Dhari Devi, the agitated Kali has been woken up, and she seeks the demon Raktabija (seed of blood). As per mythology, Raktabija took various bodies and she continued to destroy each one. Primarily this indicates unimaginable bloodshed and death. Exactly on the next day a massive cloudburst and flash flood started in Uttarakhand. Today, when official death figures are at 1,000 (identified people/bodies), the unofficial figure is way beyond 5,000 deaths and more are still following as the rains are returning.

Restore the idol of Dhari Devi (Kali torso) to its original shrine and start the prayers that calm her down. Shri Yantra sadhana has to be maintained at Kalimath and Bael leaf must be offered to Kedarnath. If this is done, then Kali will calm down and the agitation of nature will stop. If this is not done, then the agitation of Kali shall spread throughout India and this will prove to be one of the worst years in the history of modern India.

I have heard similar incident when there was floods in Mantralaya Mutt(AP)the abode of Saint Raghvendraswamy Swamy on Karnataka - AP border. When Manchalamma temple was moved to other location major floods occurred. The temple town suffered devastation due to swirling waters of the river Tungabhadra. Whole town was swept due to rain waters.

Kedarnath was because of a natural disaster.

Man-made disaster. Fuelled by politico-bureaucrat-contractor-real estate developer nexus. It was inevitable & damage was waiting to happen.

I frequent Garhwal & Kumaon from time to time. Garhwal has deteriorated like anything. It is more than sad to witness what is being done to it.

Kumaon, for reasons, unknown to me, is managing better. One thing going for Kumaon is that there is no Mandakini, Alaknanda flowing through it & Kosi is far too gentle to cause any real damage. Kosi's nature is somewhat non-perennial until the glaciers after Munsiyari melt to a considerable extent.

Still, when one views the brazenness & the berserk pace at which this unplanned & often, illegal developmental activities are happening throughout the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, it becomes apparent that such incidents would repeat themselves with even greater intensity.

No, it is not about the environmentalists. It is about saving our a*ses. A huge section of our hill population exhibits discomfort & nurses overt resentment against the sham that goes on here, in the name of development. For, they are the ones who are directly & adversely impacted by such mindless mining, unscientific construction & eventual vagaries of nature.

There is a limit to how much you can explode the Himadri for granite & Himanchal ranges for human settlement colonies. It is mainly the lobby of miners, real-estate developers & well-connected contractors that is pushing relentlessly their hideous agenda of destroying Himalaya for personal interests.

And, Shivaliks (the epicenter of the current tragedy) are considered to be one of the most eco-sensitive zone in Eurasia, highly prone to earthquake & landslides. All this is due to a simple reason that Himalaya are a young-fold mountains (just 50 million years old, like the blink of an eye when planet's geological cycles are considered) & is still in the making. You have to conduct serious feasibility analysis & implement the recommendations, adhere to caveats that come out of such studies, rather than brushing all scientific & legislative norms under the carpet.

If one had the slightest clue about how this neta-babu-seth-thekedaar nexus works, one would understand that they are all in for quick money, in blatant disregard of all consequences, inevitably at the detriment of general populace.

It is extremely disheartening to see in our quest for professional success & material gains, we tend to ignore the ground-realities of the environment that is sustaining us- our climate, our agriculture, our exports, our economy, our jobs- all connected in a cyclical manner. And then, what infuriates me further is that, even educated folks tend to form half-baked, superficial opinions on every topic, even when they have little clue, care, zest or interest in understanding & analyzing the ground realities & their implications.

okay, the cloudburst and flash floods were because of wrath of shakti and tomorrow if Shiva does tandav, there might be 8 or 9 richter scale earthquake. but the illegal constructions that were present where they should not be present, done under BJP and Congress governments, the substandard roads built by corrupt/incompetent officers and private contractors, the trees that were cut, the non existent disaster management system, the substandard buildings that could collapse in future earthquake, all this was not built on orders of Dhari devi or Shiva. Gods and dams come handy for avoiding responsibilities.

A god no longer remains a god if he/she punishes the innocent with a natural disaster. The very concept of benevolent vanishes there.

It is not like that.
Man does stupid things and disasters happen. God steps in and saves the day.
There are many things which are worse than disasters.

So you mean this flood happened because of man's mistakes right? Or because man removed the idol?
Removing Idol is not the problem. It is negligence by state which caused it in first place.
With out our utmost effort, how can you expect to God do any thing for you?
Can't you see how god came down and took blame for it, when the main culprit is Man himself.
Are you saying god saved more people in this flood?
He must have saved many, for he can't ignore when part of him suffering.
Like what?
Like swimming in ignorance and getting attached to prakrithi.

Agreed. That was my point in the first place. It was in answer to this article posted which says that it was the wrath of the goddess which caused the floods. I disagree by saying that a goddess won't do such a thing.

actually that dam was not being built. Since 4 years after start the dam collapsed 5 times

and honestly that dam is not built in a good location. If it bursts more than 1 million people will perish within 3 minutes. The mountains are weak and new.

And Dhari devi is a shakti. It was known for controlling the Alaknanda and Alaknanda never went above danger level since Adi Shanakra Acharya's visit.

But within days after they chopped rock and uprooted the idol, Alaknanda which is known for smooth flow , ran like Bhagirathi. And then Flood in Kidarnath occurred.

It is not the wrath of Goddess, but people say the location of dam is not correct. And it has collapsed many times when it was being built. And next to dam is an urban area of more than a million people.

Hence the goddess was giving signal that this dam is not being built correctly and is a disaster is in awaiting.
