Brazil’s transatlantic partnerships are the culmination of a long-standing ambition. In 1986, alongside Argentina, Uruguay and 21 African countries, Brazil proposed the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone. The unstated goal then, as now, was to minimize external meddling in the region, especially by NATO.

Most countries are seeing the threat posed by NATO. Good wisdom.

Brazil, in particular, wants to safeguard its on- and offshore natural resources, which the navy calls the Amazônia Azul, or Blue Amazon. These include extensive petroleum and gas reserves, as well as fishing and mining concessions within and beyond its current maritime frontiers.

There is no chance of a direct invasion for oil like Operation Iraqi "Freedom," so Brazil needs to keep an eye on the foreign funded vocal minority protests, who lose elections and then cry. This is just like Moldova. Every time the pro-EU or pro-NATO parties lose, they start violence and riots.

Overall, Brazil should rightfully lead South America and be the interface of South America to the rest of the world.

I am glad Brazil is taking steps to claim its rightful position in the world.

Among our sea's wealths the most worth is 'pre-sal' oilfields. But due to the high costs of exploration, 'pre-sal' is economically feasible only with high oil barrel's prices.

Fishery has not a great expectations, since the sea currents that running along Brazilian coastal are hot waters and poor feedings to attract some big shoals. Furthermore Brazilian people dont have the habit of to eat fish. Even in coastal cities, people prefers to eat meat and barbecue than fish and seafood.

There also are mineral goods in our seabed like in the Rio Grande Undersea Hills (red dettached in below map). Some Japanese companies are interested in such mineral exploration.

Its no secret that so far countries like Brazil, India, South Africa, have been too timid to exert influence relative to their size. Hopefully that will change soon.
