Russian airplanes were intercepted and inspected by French Air Force Mirage F1 CR planes on June 8th and 11th, as part of Baltic 2013, NATO's air-policing mission over the 3 Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
On June 8th, two Mirage F1 CR took off from Å iauliai, Lithuania to identify 2 groups of airplanes. They first met up with a Russian VVS patrol composed of two Su-27 "Flanker" and two Su-24 "Fencer" above the Baltic Sea, near the Gulf of Riga. Two Swedish JAS-39 Grippen were already present in the area. After visual identification, they headed for a second group of airplanes composed of two Su-27 "Flanker" escorting one A-50 "Mainstay" surveillance aircraft. The French patrol escorted this group before breaking contact short of Kaliningrad's airspace.
On June 11th, a patrol of 2 Mirage F1 CR took off to inspect a group of airplanes above the Baltic Sea. They first identified an A50 "Mainstay" surveillance aircraft, before intercepting a Russian formation composed of two TU-22M3 "Backfire" bombers, escorted by 2 Su-27 "Flanker" interceptors. A few hours later, a Mirage F1 CR patrol was once again tasked with intercepting and inspecting an unidentified contact. This contact turned out to be an Il-20 COOT electronic surveillance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea.
