Actually aside from getting 'advanced' weapons to defend itself, the arms import from US has another implication for Taiwan --Taiwan has a very good industrial base. What prevents it from making its own weapons? What is the status of its own arms manufacturing?
by buying from the US Taiwan shows more value as a big customer to the US and also gains the support from lobbyists for Lockheed Martin alike. Also it's a gesture to the US "rest assured we won't get too close to Mainland China'
What the US desires is neither running into direct confrontation with China (in case of Taiwan declaring independence), nor letting Taiwan slide too close to China so that the US can always play 'mediation' . Thus whenever Taiwan gets to one of the extremes (like pro-independence DPP or nationalist KMT) the US comes out signaling stop of slipping further.
After a few more decades when most of the old generations, who think of China as motherland, die out, the reunification appeal may get less and less popular. But no mater who rules China (commie or xxx) none of them will change their stance on 'reunification' or it's simply a 'political suicide'.
