ISLAMABAD: An Islamic system of governance, introduction of Shariah law and release of jailed militants are part of a 15-point agenda finalized by the Taliban for peace talks with the Pakistan government, according to media reports on Sunday.

The Taliban 'Shura' or council, which has been meeting in the restive northwest since yesterday under its deputy chief Sheikh Khalid Haqqani, also demanded the withdrawal of the army from tribal areas, said a report on the website of the Dawn daily.

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ibrahim Khan and Jamiat Ulema-e- Islam-S leader Yousuf Shah, members of the Taliban-nominated committee, are in Waziristan for a meeting with the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. They are likely to convey the Taliban's demands to state negotiators, the report said.

The Taliban's 15-point agenda was also reported by Dunya News channel. However, Geo News reported that the Taliban's demands included release of militants, withdrawal of the army from insurgency-hit areas and compensation to people affected by violence.

The reports about the 15-point agenda could not be independently confirmed.

According to the report on Dawn's website, the agenda includes introduction of Shariah law in courts, halting US drone attacks and introduction of an Islamic system of education in public and private institutions.

Other demands include release of Pakistani Taliban and foreign fighters from jail, restoration and compensation for property damaged in drone attacks, handing over control of tribal areas to local forces, withdrawal of the army from tribal areas and shutting down of check posts.

The report said the agenda also states all criminal allegations against the Taliban should be dropped and prisoners from both sides released.

"Equal rights for all, poor and rich, families of drone attack victims to be offered jobs, end interest-based system, stop supporting the US in the war on terror, replace the democratic system of governance with the Islamic system and stop all relations with the US," the report quoted the agenda as saying.

It will not catch here. This is not some new idea of something happening in 2014. Pakistan was meant to have sharia from day 1. It is an Islamic state and should have proper sharia. It will only be the culmination of Jinnah's dream, separating the two nations.

I wish the Taliban luck in imposing sharia on all of Pakistan. I am sure all Pakistanis will welcome sharia with open arms.

Isnt most of Pakistan already like that anyway? Accepting this will only make it official.. What does he mean by replace democratic system...? I thought only the rules of governance was mentioned there, and not how to chose the people governing.

I think Jinnah was not to keen on shariah law, atleast from what I've heard, he himself loved pork, partied and drank like crazy, and he is portrayed as a moderate.the fascination with sharia law started with Zia.

I think Pakistan Adm is playing the religion card here to show the international community that its dealing with hardliners but TTP is talking about jobs, wealth distribution and more rights for the provincial governments. Religion has been always hijacked by the caretaker of Islam aka Pakistan Adm.

In two lines you have exposed Pakistan. Pakistanis have showed the "Jinnah Pakistan" to the US to get aid and money to fight Indian kafirs who were out to kill all these fun loving, pork eating moderate Pakistani Muslims. To fellow Pakis they have pretended to be very pious. Piety was required from people becuse
1. Allah wanted it that way
2. Kafirs were threatening Pakistan
3. Poverty was because of Kafirs.

Now the really pious people are asking for proof of piety, putting all the educated, sophisticated elite Pakistanis who have goverened Pakistan all these years in a big fix.

It's a warning that will happen here in our homeland if the Islamists are not kept in check. Current trend of supporting fanatical Islamic leaders in India is taking our country to the same road.

Talibani scum are now waging Jihad against Kalash and want to finish the work of their daddies like Gazani. The so called "moderate" Muslims who jump up and down and arrange "protests" on every imaginary insult to Islam are deadly silent about it.

Peace deal with Taliban: Senators express concern over women, minority rights
Upper house passes unanim-ous resolu-tion exhort-ing govt to ensure that rights are protec-ted.

ISLAMABAD: As talks between the government and the Taliban make steady headway, senators struck a note of caution on Wednesday when they unanimously passed a resolution urging the government to ensure that the rights of women and minorities remain protected under any peace framework in the tribal areas.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Nasreen Jalil tabled this resolution on National Women's Day, calling on the government to constitute a commission for the protection of women from the 'illegal orders of jirgas'.

Senators from both sides supported her move and passed it unanimously, expressing concern that the rights of women and minorities might be compromised in case of a peace deal with the Taliban in their strongholds.

A day earlier, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan had demanded that the government include representatives of women and minorities in its negotiating committee holding talks with the TTP intermediaries.

Meanwhile, lawmakers on the opposition benches demanded the prime minister clarify a recent statement by Imran Khan. Without directly naming the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief, Senator Raza Rabbani said that the head of a political party, in a television programme, claimed that the former army chief told the prime minister there are 40% chances of success in a Fata military operation.

Rabbani said that if the statement is correct, the armed forces do not have the capacity to take on the Taliban. "This statement is demoralising, not only for the Pakistani military but also for the state. It means that we are holding talks with the Taliban in a state of surrender."

He also demanded that the prime minister 'end his boycott of the Senate' and take the house into confidence over these important matters.

In response, Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq expressed shock over the political party chief's statement. Issuing such a statement at this juncture when the government is pursuing the peace talks is not suitable, he added.

However, Raza Rabbani insisted that the Prime Minister must come to the house – and soon, as the matter was serious and urgent. Raja Zafarul Haq assured him that the premier is in Turkey for the trilateral summit but he will probe the matter as soon as he returns.

A police state?

Awami National Party's Haji Adeel moved a privilege motion to the concerned committee of the house regarding the phone tapping of politicians, government officials and journalists allegedly by the agencies.

He quoted media reports that claimed that intelligence agencies were not only tapping phone calls of important personalities, but were also creating differences among government functionaries, politicians and cabinet members.

Raja Zafarul Haq supported Haji Adeel's demand to refer the matter to the privilege committee, which should summon the chiefs of these intelligence agencies and seek explanations.

An end to power woes

Earlier during the question hour, Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali informed the house that the government is providing a subsidy of Rs143 billion to consumers who are using up to 300 units of electricity.

On the Daimer-Bhasha Dam, he said its feasibility study has been completed and over Rs15 billion have been released during the current fiscal for its land acquisition and construction.

From medevialism we have risen
To medevial times we shall be driven
Come what may
We shall have our say
Turn the clock back
So that you lose track
Amidst a sea of change
We may appear strange
The good taliban & bad taliban
Our only refuge is good old Pakistan
