Actually we should not be surprised with these developments in Afghanistan. USA has a long history of getting in bed with these radicals and they actually enjoy it. Saudi Arabia was also an ultraconservative islamic state when USA established ties with it (because Oil) and now Saudi Arabia has become...welll....lets say less radical.

give them a few days, these buggers will enjoy whiskey and lap dances like their handlers in Pak
Nah. More likely some ultra hardcore faction will vie for power.

It is very apparent that like it or not, the current leadership is much smarter and modern than their 90s version. But, I am very sure there are faction that are ultra hardcore and will not like cosying up with western 'haram' culture.

The war and battles can make strange bedfellows, but once it is over that true faces gets revealed and intergroup fault lines become visible. Taliban are not a single homogeneous group, but various groups with a single goal. The goal is achieved.

So now it's time to fight between themselves?

PS Last time round (mid nineties) did they manage to govern so that the country did not fall to pieces - economy, infrastructure, utilities etc maintained in working order?

I meant to say that they are debauched douchebags from inside. Kattar Islam in appearance and happily working for all that's supposedly haram.
And the ultra hardcore thing is definitely true- the race for green, greener, greenest.

After my first assessment now the trajectory appears to be like this.

They are there to rule and establish sharia or whatever mumbo jumbo they practise. Everything will fall in line in few months. All the atrocity literature will subside and their eccentricities will be normalised like west normalize other states doing similar acts. Remember Biden when asked about Chinese treatment of Uighur Muslims, he said, ‘These are Chinese cultural practices’.

Just at the start of it I used the word rapprochement twice and transactional opening up with the current regime. They will keep fighting each other but the gravity will remain behind the Taliban. They will remain the ‘to go person’ if India has to maneuver certain things around.

Meet ‘Joe Tzu’: Disastrous USA withdrawal from Afghanistan triggers meme fest, Biden mocked for strategic blunders

One of the popular memes deriding Joe Biden read: "When retreating always give your weapons to your enemies along with a list of everyone who helped you."

More clashes break out in Panjshir, hundreds of injured and dead reported in Taliban — TV

Resistance force spokesperson Ali Maisam Nazary pointed out that the Taliban broke a "gentleman agreement" and tried to attack Panjshir on Monday, but the resistance front managed to repel the attack

MOSCOW, August 31. /TASS/. Clashes between the Taliban (outlawed in Russia) and Afghan resistance forces have erupted again in Afghanistan’s Panjshir, a resistance commander claimed that "hundreds" of radicals were wounded and killed, CNN reports.

According to the commander, the brutal fighting continues in the Hawak Pass where the Taliban lost "hundreds of people" as wounded and killed.

Resistance force spokesperson Ali Maisam Nazary said that the Taliban broke a "gentleman agreement" and tried to attack Panjshir on Monday. The resistance front managed to repel the attack, pushing the Taliban back into the Parwan Province.

After the Biden administration announced the end of its US military operation in Afghanistan and the launch of its troop pullout, the Taliban (outlawed in Russia) embarked on an offensive against Afghan government forces. On August 15, Taliban fighters swept into Kabul without encountering any resistance, and gained full control over the Afghan capital within a few hours. Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani said he had stepped down to prevent any bloodshed and subsequently fled the country. Vice President Amrullah Saleh said that under the constitution, he becomes "the caretaker president" in the absence of the president and called for armed resistance against the Taliban.

The northern province of Panjshir is the only pocket of resistance to the Taliban. It is led by Ahmad Massoud, a son of Ahmad Shah Massoud (1953-2001), a once influential leader of Afghanistan’s Tajik community who fought against the Taliban back in the 1990s.

I think India has pretty much given up on Amrullah and his boys.. Brave Amrullah is, but not even putting up a token fight before giving up Kabul, shows grave incompetence..
The Northern alliance as it exists in Panjshir, are a pale shadow of the Northern alliance before the US invasion in 2001, when they controlled 10 percent of the country.. Ultimately everyone fights for himself.. Atta Noor and Amrullah Saleh, for all their bombast on twitter, would know that they are in no position to take back major cities in Afghanistan. Probably they are just fighting for an autonomous Panjshir, or a share in the Kabul pie, failing which they would plan to hold out, until another major power decides to sponsor them in a big way..
India did good in establishing official contact with the Taliban. Would atleast help with the safety of the Indians left behind in Afghanistan..
