Doubt US is involved this time but talibani influence is guaranteed.
Taliban is not a homogeneous entity. It consists of fighters from various ethnicities pashtuns, uzbeks, tajiks, Hazaras etc) and different tribes (14 tribes approx). So the US supported taliban faction may not have done it but another faction might have. Moreover, the Talis do morph into ISIS, Al Qaeda etc. The Incharge of Security for Kabul now is Haqqani, so any guesses on who dunnit n who's under the pump now. I repeat it's a cluster foxtrot.
The longer foreign nationals are present in kabul aka hostages for taliban the longer the west stays away from rebels fighting against taliban.
Whom you call rebels have traditionally been supported by the CARs north of Afghanistan. West has hardly any role to play in that. The Russians and Indians hold sway in that Alliance. West supports the faction that US supports and as mentioned above, that is the faction that holds sway in Kabul.
As an observation, it is very very interesting to note that two very big neighbors (India and China) are keeping absolutely mum (except one statement by China on recognizing Tali, they know now that jumping the gun was a mistake). Let the plots unravel. Emotions aside, it's all about business. Just stand back and look at it.... India's role is critical now given that things are going sideways for the west. In geo-politics there is never a vaccum for long, India is in all probably willing and ready.
