The US doesn't really want the breakup of Pakistan unfortunately. Too afraid that jihadists will get their hands on the nukes in the chaos and confusion (also why they didn't push too hard on Pak to stop supporting the Taliban). As for denuclearization, that's kind of a tough nut to crack. I posted in the India-US relations thread a possible strategy but no one seemed to bite.

US prestige as a superpower has taken a big hit under this Budden. No wonder OBL said that he would like to see a weak US under him as US Prez.

Now US is forced to take thousands of Trozan Horses in the form of Afgan refugees who would populate like rats and increase the current 1% US population of muslims many fold! They would soon forget that US saved them and would start their typical jihadi ghettos like they do in UK/France/Germany etc. You would see some Mosques near your home blaring horns 25 times a day starting at 4am using your freedom! There might be a much bigger attack on US homeland than 9/11 in the form of dirty nukes, water contamination and all! Also the White US population has drastically dropped by 10% a decade ago to around 58% now! The other communities are taking over slowly! The future of US might be something else and no empire has stayed forever strong and united!

Coming back to your point aka excuses to let Chinese Pakistan blackmail, exploit & threaten everyone in the name of nukes... US has all the money, brain, military and proven pre-emptive Will to do anything! Why maintain 800 military bases around the world when you have to pack your bags, tail between legs and run like a coward! Being a Superpower means lot of responsibility and what you are saying is a excuse of not doing anything! See the below post, this is how a strategic brain of a superpower should think, it thinks of the SOLUTIONS specially when it's a self created HUGE MESS like AFG and not the problem and surrender! It is not hard to defang Pakistan off it's nuclear weapons. Look hard enough, track and list scientists, workers and understand their chain of command. What visible may not be the actual and every layer must be exfoliated.

Dedicated precision delivery package to hit facilities, launchers and launch sites. Over pack anti-ballistic missile defence grids for the areas which can not be covered.

Know their contingency plans, follow what they will do in case they see it losing because most of the windows to attack us will be gained during or after the chaos. Check their allies, predict global reaction and place plugs on them.

Create multi-level deceptions, script internal strives, geo-politocal events, social media storms and other distractions.

Be ready for collateral damages, spare money to compensate them. Plan during water adequate seasons. Compromise their leaders and plant them when they fall. Invade, contain and have exit plan.

Improve internal security for sleeper cells and lone wolf attacks. Have leadership benches ready if main leader is taken down. Inform and ready population for long and limited insurgency in different parts of the country.

If you read media, most of the Russians have made up their mind of not going into that shit hole again. From Putin position, why again go into that quagmire, so long they do not enter Central Asian countries he is fine.
I was watching one old interview where Ruslan Aushev said that the introduction of Soviet forces in afghanistan was a big mistake. USSR had a high leverage over Afghanistan in the form of diplomatic, economical etc and i quote 'sly use' of special forces would have been more appropriate.
If you juxtapose with what the Russian did in Syria it tend to confirm same, send in Special forces with air support and do the dirty works. It will be difficult to explain to Russian mothers why you are again going into that shit hole.

You are buying US talking points lock, stock and barrel.. Sanctioning Pakistan is not the same as wanting to break up the country ( Mods please pin this quote as many people use this argument to give US the benefit of doubt ).. If that was so, nations like Iran, North Korea, Venezuela which have been subject to inhuman sanctions would have broken up long ago.. And I am not asking US to apply such tough sanctions.. They could have atleast squeezed Pakistan a bit by targeting ISI, taking out GSP etc.. but no.. Yankees won't even do that inspite of Pakis blowing US prestige up to high heaven.. US is a nation that sanctions others at the drop of a hat.. When, such a nation does not sanction Pakistan, inspite of being ba*ged by the Pakis in all its orifices.. then the US is one untrustworthy SOB..

You talk as if Denuclearizing Pakistan by force is an easy thing to do. Oh yeah let's go track down all of their nuclear scientists and high ranking personnel with knowledge of the exact location of even underground nukes that satellites can't detect because the ISI is posting that information on facebook.

These are the deepest held secrets of a non-pushover state. If it was that easy US would have done it to Russia and China too.

You can't actually avoid the possibility of nukes flying in a war against Pakistan or North Korea. You can only give BMDs to your allies and hope most of it is intercepted.

The difference is that in pakistan, it's the people that are radicalized. If the state collapses, unlike in NK, the jihadis will get nukes. If the people protest like crazy because they are starving due to sanctions, they will eventually rebel and fight back against the military and take over, and some will be Jihadis. That was the concern. Plus invading Pak, no matter how minimal your mission (even if it's just to wipe out Talibunnies on other side of Durand Line) means going to war with Pakistani military. that will be wayy more expensive and way more troops dead than attacking Afghan Taliban, even for 50 years straight, let alone 20. Pakistan has an organized formal military that is highly equipped by Russian and Chinese (and even American) equipment and has trained for war since it began, unlike Talibs who are just a bunch of farmers with rusty Ak-47s and a few Toyota trucks.
