In fairness, allying with the Americans on this issue was the right way to go national interests wise. Russians and the Chinese always had opposing interests (didn't want American bases there, or Americans blocking their access to the Indian ocean/gulf, didn't want America so close to Iran etc.), and so they would rather have Talibs in power because they can be controlled via Pork-slaves.

The problem is mainly buying into American idealism. There should have been a way to communicate to the Americans that Pak is not your ally there and to stop trying to make friends or give them money and hugs. India didn't do that.

With regard to Afghanistan, Pak was pretending to be an American ally, but really Pak and China wanted US gone and Talibs in power. Americans and Indians wanted secular northern government in power. India because obviously we dont' want Pak puppets in power, America because of emotional reasons (Talibs protected bin Laden + wanted to spread democracy) and even practical (wanted bases there, which Talib opposed). In any case, we had common interests. Russians and Chinese were on the other end here.
