Taliban militants are drugging and sexually abusing boys whom they are training to carry out terror acts, Afghan officials say.

Taliban molestation of boys, once rarely discussed in Afghanistan and Pakistan, is now becoming a more common topic of conversation.

Nematullah, a former would-be suicide bomber, told Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS) that young men, including himself, endured sexual abuse by their trainers, according to a September 23 NDS statement.

Militant leader Mullah Ahmad (aka Mullah Akhtar), who trained the young man to carry out a suicide attack on his motorcycle in Adraskan District of Herat Province in September, also sexually abused him, Nematullah said.

Police foiled Nematullah's attempted attack and informed NDS officials about his plot and the sexual victimisation of boys by the Taliban. Mullahs Nasim and Akhtar drugged several bombers-in-training to the point where they passed out and repeatedly abused them while they were unconscious, Nematullah said.

Observers confirm sexual abuse
Doctors and activists in Pakistan and Afghanistan have medically confirmed that such abuse occurs.

"We have examined at least five teenage boys "¦ who were sexually abused by the Taliban in South Waziristan," Dr. Muhammad Hashim at the Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital in Bannu District, told Central Asia Online.

The boys escaped from Taliban captivity and told authorities that militants molested them, Hashim said. Mustafa Gul, a teacher at the Forensic Science Department of Khyber Medical College Peshawar, also has worked with young men abused by the Taliban.

"We've had "¦ 27 sexual assault cases involving boys since January 1," Gul told Central Asia Online. "Five Taliban were involved," he said, though he provided no information about whether the militants will face sex abuse charges if they are caught.

The militants often kidnap impoverished boys who are susceptible to being preyed upon, Khalid Khan, a special branch police officer, told Central Asia Online, noting that several boys who escaped Taliban training centres in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) told investigators that they were abused and that their parents could not do anything.

Taliban militants are not the only one who abuse boys, though. Some clerics have been caught red-handed abusing their pupils in mosques, Khan said.

"In a Peshawar-based mosque, we registered a case against a local prayer leader for indulging in sex act with a boy [who was at the mosque for guidance in memorising the Koran]," he said.

Practice condemned, termed against Islam
Religious scholars and children's-rights activists issued strong condemnations of such crimes after the NDS released information about Nematullah's case.

"It defames Islam," Arshad Haroon, a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regional leader of the Strengthening Participatory Organisation, told Central Asia Online. "No Muslim can justify subjecting kids to sexual abuse. It is a heinous crime."

"It's by no means a human act. "¦ Drugging and forcing them into such acts are condemnable by all social norms and human values," Haroon said.

"Now the people of Afghanistan can see the real face of the militants," University of Kabul student and social activist Ziauddin said.

"Why don't these militant trainers and leaders put on a suicide vest and blow themselves up?"

EDITOR'S NOTE: That militants would resort to unscrupulous methods to recruit teens for suicide bombing is nothing new. But emerging stories about sexual abuse are raising eyebrows. Central Asia Online is taking a look at the concerns raised by such abuse. Today's story focuses on the Afghan intelligence agency's reports of the Taliban militants sexually abusing young boys at their training camps.

It appears that tharki and sex starved Talibs, see suicide bombers as easy target, as they are going to die, so Talibs use them for their gay business.

Afghanistan: Bacha bazi

12/04/2012
Bacha Bazi (Persian: بچه بازی, literally "playing with children" in Iranian dialect and "playing with boys" in Afghani dialect), also known as bacchá (from the Persian bacheh بچه- "child, young man, calf") or bacha bereesh (beardless boy) is sexual slavery and child prostitution in which prepubescent and adolescent boys are sold to wealthy or powerful men for entertainment and sexual activities. This business thrives in Afghanistan, where many men keep them as status symbols.

By Muslim ethics, both adulterers or homosexuals are strictly forbidden.

In Afghan culture, women including prostitutes and belly dancers are not allowed to dance in front of men.

Therefore, when a warlords wants to hold a party, he goes to a local village and lure boys in the age of 12 or so with money or coercion. Once the exploiters lure the boys, the boys wear dress and makeup, and dance like women in front of their owners' friends or guests. When the party is over, the owners, usually warlords and military commenders, take the boys to their beds and sleep with them. Sometimes, they share their boys with their friends for sexual abuse.

The boys are "owned" by single or married men who trade or keep the boys as concubines. According to reports, the boys' ages range from eight to 19, when they "age out" of the practice and are released.

"The bacha dancers are often abused children whose families have rejected them," said the Guardian's Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, who wrote about the practice in September. He described one boy who was sexually assaulted by a mechanic in his town. The boy's family blamed him and turned him out. He was forced to live with the man who attacked him. "Now I am with someone else, and he taught me how to dance," the boy, now 16 years old, said.

"What was so unnerving about the men I had met was not just their lack of concern for the damage their abuse was doing to the boys," said Najibullah Quraishi, the Afghan journalist who was escorted through the underground by one of the bacha bazi pimps for six months.
"It was also their casualness with which they operated and the pride with which they show me their boys, their friends, their world. They clearly believed that nothing they were doing was wrong."

But observers say the age-old ritual of man-boy predatory sex, which is obliquely condoned throughout Afghanistan because of a pervasive fear or indifference about prosecuting it on any serious level, according to numerous reports, has proliferated after decades of poverty, corruption, and a lack of enduring social institutions.
All reports indicate that while bacha bazi and the abuse is illegal, perpetrators rarely pay for their crimes. Meanwhile, poor families sell their children, and orphans are snatched off the street. They are the meekest, preyed upon by the strongest – the kind of wealthy, powerful men who have benefited most from the Western occupation and generous foreign aid.

First, there seems to be a tacit acknowledgment on the part of Western soldiers that Afghans they serve with in the field are engaging in homosexual activity (no irony there, of course). Many have written about how the strict segregation of Afghan men and women (who are also treated as property in traditional Afghan society) before marriage prevents the course of natural physical and emotional relationships between the sexes, and as one Afghan historian told me, "Straight guys find that their sexuality is flexible in these sorts of situations "¦ soon [sex between men is] widely accepted with a wink and a nudge."

One reason Afghan villagers prefer to deal with the Taliban rather than the government security forces is that the latter have a habit of seizing their sons at checkpoints and sodomizing them.

"Under Islamic law, those who practice this would be stoned to death," Mawllawi Mohammaed Sadiq Sadiqyar, a prayer leader and scholar in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, told Reuters.

If Hamid Karzai sits on the top of this worm-infested confection without one word about prosecuting these crimes or protecting the children of his country, what does it say about the billions of dollars we have poured into his government to assist him?

Are we the world's biggest chumps or the world's biggest enablers?

"There was a horrified reaction across Britain last week when a 25-year-old policeman called Gulbuddin working in a police station in the Nad Ali district of Helmand killed five British soldiers when he opened fire with a machine gun on them. But the reason he did so, according to Christina Lamb in The Sunday Times, citing two Afghans who knew Gulbuddin, was that he had been brutally beaten, sodomized, and sexually molested by a senior Afghan officer whom he regarded as being protected by the British.

The practice of bacha bazi is one form of pederasty. The practice has been prevalent in Central-East Asia since ancient times, when it was observed by the ancient Greeks.

"These batchas are as much respected as the greatest singers and artistes are with us. Every movement they make is followed and applauded, and I have never seen such breathless interest as they excite, for the whole crowd seems to devour them with their eyes, while their hands beat time to every step. If a batcha condescends to offer a man a bowl of tea, the recipient rises to take it with a profound obeisance, and returns the empty bowl in the same way, addressing him only as Taxir, 'your Majesty', or Kulluk 'I am your slave'. Even when a batcha passes through the bazaar all who know him rise to salute him with hands upon their hearts, and the exclamation of Kulluk! and should he deign to stop and rest in any shop, it is thought a great honour."

A 2011 study in Pakistan involving four boys found similarities and differences between the practice in Pakistan and those observed in Uzbekistan in the 1970s by Ingeborg Baldauf.

US staff sergeant kills 16 Afghan civilians, officials say
The soldier reportedly left his base in the early hours Sunday and went to two villages just a few hundred yards away. He then opened fire on Afghan civilians sleeping in their homes, Minister of Border and Tribal Affairs Asadullah Khalid told Reuters. The service member entered three homes in the villages in Kandahar province, he said.
"No Taliban were here. No gun battle was going on," said the woman. "We don't know why this foreign soldier came and killed our innocent family members. Either he was drunk or he was enjoying killing civilians."
