Taliban attack Kabul guesthouse 'thinking Indian envoy was inside'

NEW DELHI/KABUL: Four Indians and an American were among those killed when Taliban gunmen stormed a guesthouse in the Afghan capital thinking that the Indian Ambassador was inside the complex popular among foreign nationals as the attack ended after hours-long siege.

The attack started at about 9pm on Wednesday when three gunmen launched a brazen assault at the Park Palace Guesthouse, located in the Kolola Pushta area of the Kabul city.

Soon after the gunmen stormed the guest house, Afghan National Security Forces including special forces arrived and began striking back the attackers and also rescuing those under siege inside the guest house.

"Four Indians have been killed in the attack," officials sources said.

There was no clarity over the overall death toll apart from the confirmation that four Indians and an American were among the dead. At least six people were also wounded in the attack.

President Ashraf Ghani's special envoy for good governance Ahmad Zia Massoud visited the attack scene in Kabul.

The militants attacked the guesthouse thinking the (Indian) Ambassador (Amar Sinha) was present in the compound, Massoud was quoted as saying by Khaama Press.

Massoud said the assault was likely a political attack but he did not elaborate further, according to the report.

Taliban claim attack

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the siege at the guesthouse which was about to host a musical concert.

"The attack was planned carefully to target the party in which important people and Americans were attending," the militants said in a statement.

When the attack took place, the musical event was due to begin and was to be attended by the Turkish and Indian guests as well Afghan nationals, an Afghan Security official was quoted as saying.

Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said security forces rescued 54 people from inside the guesthouse.

All three attackers were killed in the siege that lasted for about seven hours, ending in the wee hours of this morning.

"Unfortunately a few Indian casualties among others at the Kabul g/house attack today," Indian ambassador Sinha had earlier tweeted but official sources later confirmed that four Indians were among the dead.

United States Embassy in Kabul confirmed the death of one of American national in the attack.

Attack on Indians in Afghanistan

In May last year, the Indian consulate in Herat in western Afghanistan was attacked by four heavily-armed gunmen, who were subsequently killed in an encounter.

In August 2013, a failed bombing against the Indian consulate in Jalalabad city near the border with Pakistan killed nine people, including six children. No Indian officials were hurt.

The Indian embassy in Kabul was attacked twice in 2008 and 2009 that left 75 people dead.

Apart from Salma dam project, India has invested in some major infrastructure projects including the Afghan parliament building in Kabul.

India's development assistance programme for Afghanistan currently stands at USD two billion, making it the leading donor nation among all regional countries.

Looks like paki retaliation for alleged RAW involvement .
May be ...
Another joke.---> ISI has intercepted a call from Pakistan to India .In which Pakistani caller said " work is done!!"..
And they say its RAW involvement..but refuses to share that recording with media.
KARACHI (Dunya News) – Intelligence agencies have obtained evidence regarding involvement of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India's top external intelligence agency, in Safoora Chowrangi massacre, sources told.

As per details, three calls have been traced in this regard and in one call a terrorist could be heard saying the “work is done.”

After finding the evidence, the law enforcement personnel have also arrested two key suspects.

Sources told that professional target killers were hired to kill 45 members of Ismaili community near Safoora Chowrangi who were travelling in a bus from Al-Azhar Garden to Ayesha Manzil.

Chairing a high level meeting at Governor House Karachi on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Nawaz said Karachi is economic hub of the country and therefore, anything happening there assumes greater importance.

He said Pakistan's economic development is not liked by its enemies whose agenda is to off-track the country from the path of progress and prosperity. We have to keep a vigil on such enemies.

Nawaz Sharif said all institutions responsible for countering terrorism should gear up to meet the challenges.

On the other hand, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif said that no efforts will be spared to apprehend and punish perpetrators of this terrorist act and their abettors.

Looks like a local ISI module still enjoying more tactical independence or Pakistan still trying its luck in Afghanistan since fingers may not point at them like the way it will in case of another terrorist attack in India.

I have said it before that Pakistan has been defeated in Afghanistan and in Kashmir. They have been reduced to such pin pricks. This attack is mere a signaling and this the best they could have done. Not to mention using foreign soil for such signaling to India is not going to make Afghan government happy which they are begging these days for help stop foreign terrorist entering Pakistan.

The ISI was behind the attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul and this guest house is often targeted because Indians stay there. Its obvious Pakistan's proxies in afghanistan are still active.

In the first post except for the title, nowhere it is mentioned that attackers were assuming Indian envoy was inside. Isn't it?

Looks like that. It's possible that the situation in balochistan and FATA might get worse. The Afghan refugees who have been kicked out from pakistan have gone back to face starvation and chaos. This further erodes pakistans fragile relationship with afghans.
Looks like the end of Af-Pak wet dream.

http://www.thenews.com.pk/article-184733-Afghanistan-should-stop-RAW-from-using-its-soil:-FO-

The response from PAK FO seems drafted before the Kabul attack.

Pakistan stop over playing your cheap tricks, It will cost you another large chunk of land and no connectivity with any other nation including China.

There was a sanskrit Shaloka in a book I read many years ago that ''A cunning wolf dies miserable death while pulling a heavy piece of a dead Elephant's trunk''. Here Pakistan you are dealing with an alive and raging Elephant with 3 trillion dolor economy; who has just switched to offensive defense strategy.
