The first of Taiwan's Tuo River- class stealth corvettes launched earlier this year was designed especially to counter the radar and command center of China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, Aleksey A Maslov, the director of the Centre for Chinese Studies at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia has told the website of RTR-Planeta based in Moscow. Though known as carrier-killers, the Tuo River-class corvette was not developed to actually sink the Chinese carrier, Maslov said. However, this class of vessel has the capability to conduct electronic warfare against the carrier's radar and communication systems, hindering its ability to launch its fighters and helicopters. The ROC Navy plans to build between eight and 12 Tuo River- class stealth corvettes in the near future. Tuo River, the lead ship in the class, entered service in March. In addition to its electronic warfare capabilities, the corvette also boasts powerful weapons systems. It can carry eight Hsiung Feng II and eight Hsiung Feng III anti-ship missiles, one Otobreda 76mm gun, one close-in weapon system and two 12.7mm machine guns. As the PLA Navy begins to deploy more advanced and modern warships, asymmetrical warfare becomes the only option for Taiwan's navy. With its relatively small size, Tuo River-class stealth corvettes can be deployed from smaller ports. The ship's hull uses an aluminum alloy which offers protection against magnetic mines.

Interestingly unusual bow on this vessel. The ROC Navy has ordered 8-12 of these vessels. What a shot in the arm for the Taiwanese defence industry! If this proves successful, foreign navies may be interested in buying the vessel, which can only benefit Taiwan's defence industry and gain revenues from exports. Go, Taiwan!

US approves potential FMS to Taiwan of Harpoon Coastal Defense Systems and missiles
On the same day that China announced sanctions against several US companies selling weapons to Taiwan, the US State Department approved another potential multibillion-dollar Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the island aimed at improving its capabilities to “counter or deter maritime aggressions, coastal blockades, and amphibious assaults”.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 26 October the approval of a USD2.37 billion sale to Taiwan of up to 100 Boeing Harpoon Coastal Defense Systems (HCDSs) and up to 400 RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II medium-range, surface-launched, anti-ship missiles along with related equipment and support.

The DSCA stated that as part of the proposed deal, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) – Taiwan’s principal representative office in the country – had also requested four RTM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II exercise missiles, 411 containers, 100 HCDS launcher transporter units, 25 radar trucks, spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, technical assistance, engineering and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support.

The agency said that the potential sale, which still needs to be approved by the US Congress, would improve Taiwan’s capability “to meet current and future threats by providing a flexible solution to augment existing surface and air defences”. It also stated that the acquisition of the HCDSs and related missiles would improve Taiwanese security and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region.
