Taiwan has held live-fire missile tests, as Chinese President Hu Jintao travels to the US for a state visit.

Five out of 19 missiles failed to hit their targets, at the drill attended by President Ma Ying-jeou.

Officials said the drills sent a message to the US that Taiwan still needs American help to defend itself, despite improving ties with China.

Analysts say Taiwan is worried about a potential threat from Beijing after China unveiled a prototype stealth jet.

China continues to claim the island as part of its territory, and has not renounced the use of force to achieve reunification.

Taiwan is still hoping to purchase advanced fighter jets and submarines from the US

Taiwan, a democracy, has been ruled separately since the end of a civil war in 1949.

The Taiwanese military said the exercises were routine, and aimed at boosting its defence capabilities.

Speaking to the BBC, Taiwan's Deputy Defence Secretary Andrew Yang said the operation was not offensive in nature, but was intended to stop any attacks by China.

"China still holds the option to use force against Taiwan. They have never renounced the use of force. We consider this a direct threat against us, so we need to consolidate our armed forces."
Advanced weapons

Mr Yang told the BBC the drills were also designed to send the US a clear message - that Taiwan still needs US help in defending itself, even as it builds closer economic ties with Beijing.

He said that Taiwan was developing its own advanced missiles, which would be able to reach military bases and airports on China's east coast.

However, the island depends on the US for advanced weapons.

The BBC's Cindy Sui in Taipei says Taiwan is still hoping to purchase advanced fighter jets and submarines, to upgrade its ageing fleet and narrow the gap with China.

Washington, however, needs Beijing's help on a host of issues - from North Korea to currency appreciation, our correspondent says.

The last time the US approved an arms package to Taiwan 12 months ago, China was furious, cancelling military exchanges and security talks.

Almost all countries that have dispute(s) with China are propping up their military strength. China is without any ally in this region and in the World. Maybe, WWIII has begun it's course and start with the dis-integration of Pakistan.

For cleaning up the region, it has to be done with cleaning up both the arms of the communist china, Pakistan and North Korea once disintegrated, in no way then the communists can pitch their voices as they are doing it now.

Virtually they are shutting India with the help of Pakistan and same is the case with Japan, South Korea. As the Chinese donot have friendly neighbours, they have adopted this policy of containing them with two rogue states, which keeps on threatening world by the nuclear clout.

Once both are cleaned, communists won't be able to stand on their feet.

Yes. However, with trillions of dollars in debt, there is little US or the West can do now. This is the time when the West would consider resurrecting their economy. Otherwise, we would have already witnessed an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities by US+Israel, or by Israel alone with US' green signal. Also, US is far too stretched in Iraq & Afghanistan, with Pakistan milking US to the core - but doing little or nothing.

The way things are in Pakistan, that time will come sooner than later, when every single terrorist group will turn against their masters - the ISI & PA. This is when Pakistan's dis-integration will start. And it takes only a single crazy mullah and a handful of jihadis to steal nuclear materials and boom - kaput! China won't be able to control Pakistan then, nor can China control the aggressiveness of the North Koreans, which might result in China siding with the US to save their a$$. However, going by the assertiveness Chinese are displaying by way of border incursions and threatening statements coming out from CCP's mouthpiece dailies, WWIII would start if China retaliates against the US - which would be a suicide!

A good military strength of Taiwan is always in India's best interests. India must help taiwan atleast secretly if not openly.

Taiwan is one of the largest arms importers in the world, $4.5 billion in 2010 which is on par with India. France has made good money in the past, but we need to mend relations after the frigate scandal so we can get back to making money. No way we should let USA dominate their imports.

Hmm, maybe mainland should be involved in this market as well, after all, internal trades will boost consumption more which is what China needs, or maybe Taiwan should dismiss it's forces and replace them with PLA which can defence them way better, hahaha

china is trying to consolidate territories which it feels it has a right.one may condemn what china is doing but no one can deny that it is in their supreme national interest which the western powers have done for the last few centuries.so i think india should drop its pacifist, soft state mentality and emulate what china is doing.look the present map of the world is largely what the major western powers have decided since the end of ww2.now india and china are growing economically at a breakneck pace so like china we should do what is in the supreme interest of the nation unlike what the western powers might want.india should grow militarily at similar pace like china and claim territories which it feels it has a right like pok, akshai chin, even the territory of pakistan and bangladesh,nepal,bhutan-in short the whole of south asia and most importantly the indian ocean.

Mainland already is involved with this market. There would be no market if it wasn't for mainland threats. hahaha

At Taiwan's 'show of strength', third of missiles off target

JIUPENG: Taiwan's leader presided on Tuesday over an unusually public test-firing of 19 missiles, but almost a third missed their targets, raising new questions about the self-ruled island's readiness to defend against Chinese attack.

President Ma Ying-jeou's attendance at the drills at a base in the country's south was ostensibly to underscore his commitment to an effective Taiwanese deterrent, following critcism that the island's defence has been undermined under his policy of reconciling with the mainland. However, one analyst suggested the public display was aimed at persuading Washington to sell more advanced arms to Taiwan.

Six of the 19 surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles failed in drills that came after China's successful test flight last week of a J-20 stealth aircraft, a system expected to further widen its growing edge over Taiwan's own equipment-starved air force. "I'm not satisfied with the results," Ma told reporters after the missile drills. "I hope the military will find out the reasons and improve its training."

The missile tests were the first held in full view of the press for almost a decade. They were meant, Ma said, "to bring more transparency into military affairs and allow the public to view the military's readiness". But under a cloud-speckled winter sky, six of the missiles failed to hit their targets, including one RIM-7M Sparrow, which cascaded harmlessly into the South China Sea less than 30 seconds after launch. Other missiles tested included Sky Bow IIs – which have a range of 200km – MIM-23 Hawks and FIM-92 Stingers.

Following China's test of the J-20, the United Daily News questioned Ma's policy of shifting the military's main mission away from defense and toward disaster relief.

This is the second time in a row US missiles sold to Taiwan have failed in large numbers. Made in US is turning synonymous with "Made in China."

Taiwan should ask India for BrahMos and India should be more than happy to supply them with it, in this way live tests could be conducted near the territory for which it is actually meant. BrahMos won't disappoint, i am sure.

And the same involvement must be the reason that Taiwan is not buying any new weapons from France, :balle:

Thank you, now I found the second reason why Taiwan is not buying new weapons from France: quality
looks like French weapon has worse quality than that of US, and also has unreasonable high price.
