Taiwan designs fighter jet with Russian help: Report

Taipei, June 19: Taiwan has completed the design of its own third-generation fighter jet with Russian expertise, to make up for a scuppered US purchase deal, a newspaper report said on Friday.

The fighter, developed by Taiwan's government-owned Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC), is based on the F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter (JSF) being developed for the US Air Force, the China Times said.

Designed by Lockheed Martin of the US, the F-35 carries a price tag of more than USD 90 million, it said.

Taiwan began developing the jet after a deal to buy F-16 C/D fighters ran aground in 2007 as Washington disapproved of the pro-independence policies of the Democratic Progressive Party which was then in power, it said.

That deal, worth at least USD 3.3 billion, would have been Washington's biggest arms sale to the island since 2001.

The newspaper said the design for the fighter, with double engines and short take-off ability, was completed after AIDC sent staff to Russia. It did not specify which Russian agency or company was involved.

China has threatened to invade Taiwan should it declare formal independence, prompting the island to acquire more advanced weaponry.

some one tell this reporter he is a complete idiot, making a third generation plane by copying a fifth generation JSF a poor copy or idiotic reporting.

Taiwan has diffierent criterion to class the generation of birds.

According to Taiwan's criterion:

1G: F5;
2G:IDF/F16/M2000/flanker;
3G:F35/F22;

wise men should not take military report from Taiwan too seriously!

what Taiwanese medias are good at is entertainment&amusement reports, instead of military reports

There are some obvious errors in tis article:
1)Russia helping to finish the third generation plane which is based on fifth generation JSF.
2)Do Russians have a fifth generation plane yet-NO, why would they help with this before PAKFA is completed?
3)Do Russians know the designs of the JSF or the details to help complete this plane based on that plane.
4)why did Taiwan ask Russia to help when LM Americans are building the JSF?
5)This article talks more about the JSF than what the input by Russia was to help complete this project.

I agree there's more hole in this story then Swiss cheese. Just the base of this is wrong Russia and China still have projects going on together and major trade so helping China's enemy would be a not be happening.

I'm sure its only the President holding this up if it were up to LM and most US military higher up's brand new C/D Block-52+ Vipers would be rolling off the production lines. Taiwan can only bargin from strength when dealing with China France already doom their Mirage 2000-5s because of the lack of MICA missile support. The US made A/B Vipers must be getting on the old side and need replacing. Sell a few squadrons 3 to 4 armed with the new AIM-120C7s or latest models and 9X teamed wih ASEA radar's and China would be flipping out. Even their best Flankers and J-10s (really unknown) would be seen first and out gunned second. Any future talks held between these two coutnries and for others dealing with this issue in this region will be fail if China sees Taiwan as weak.

The Father of stealth is a Russian...So they must have been researching it for a very long time. We also saw a lot of old declassified documents and pictures which showed stealth research of the late 70s in the Soviet union. I will never underestimate the Russians, they might come up with the most ingenious product which no one would expect.
