Tagore's plaque in Iranian parliament - Hindustan Times

Amid efforts for a greater diplomatic bonhomie between India and Iran, poet and nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore will find a place in Iran's Majles (Parliament) 79 years after his visit to Tehran.

A plaque inscribed with his poem 'Paroshye Janmodine' (A birthday in Persia) will be unveiled by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar in the Majles museum. A statue of scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose will also be unveiled by Kumar at the University of Tehran's science and technology park.

Kumar will lead a six-member parliamentary delegation to the Iranian Parliament on November 2.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September and is scheduled to visit Tehran soon. A delegation from the Iranian central bank also visited New Delhi and held discussions with RBI and finance ministry officials to explore different avenues of economic cooperation.

While Iran supplies almost 20% of India's oil import, New Delhi is looking forward to Iranian investments in the petroleum sector. Two Iranian banks have also applied for license to open branches in India. New Delhi has also assured Iran that it will soon ink the bilateral Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement.

The two countries have also agreed to set up a payment mechanism to facilitate bilateral trade. Tagore visited Iran on April 28, 1932. Tagore also visited Shiraz city to pay homage to renowned Iranian poets Hafiz and Sa'adi.

A welcome step. We must expand ties with Iran. Not only this helps us meet our energy needs, but also lays the foundations for expanding our trade and influence with Central Asia and Turkey as well.

Iran should not be a problem to deal with . They are straight faced and mostly confused lot in terms of knowing what to do in foreign policies. They've stood with us for a long time and we must cooperate in return. Though there might be a certain element of unease because of Israel's sensitivity, we must know to play the balance.

Israel is sensitive to being destroyed. Iran is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. Is that OK with you?

No they are not.

You should learn Farsi and hear for yourself what Ahmadinejad says, instead of believing the words that Western media puts in his mouth. Ahmadinejad is a very intelligent man, far more so than he is depicted to be.

Not our damn problem. Its between Iran and Israel. We have been doing business with Israel since only 2-3 decades back. But we have been in touch with modern day Iran and ancient Persia for more than a millenia or so.

Just because the dynamics of the world have changed doesn't mean, we will abandon our age old relationship with Iran. And anyway, its all about business. Both of our countries want to expand bilateral trade for our own benefit. Iran is a crucial supplier of energy and I think it will only increase in future. We have made huge investments through ONGC in the hydrocarbon sector in Iran and will continue to look for other opportunities.

From time to time to battle prove their defense technology.

W.G.Ewaid,
I don't know when Iran will attack israel or America, but I do know for a Fact that america's strategic friend Pakistan is killing Americas everyday in Afghanistan by using Taliban proxy's. Just yesterday they killed 9 US soldiers by ramming a truck full of explosives. Now that's what's called a true trusted friend. Yet America is lecturing us as to who we should befriend with. I'm sorry I just cannot understand your logic.
Friend.

Destruction of Israel is not ok with me. Let there be no doubt about it. Israel is a friend of India and Israel has a very strong defense and strategic relationship with India. So definitely destruction of Israel is not welcome.

One however, needs to understand, that the literal translation from one language to another often leads to misunderstanding and also helps news media create attention grabbing headlines. I have serious doubts that Iran will attack Israel. My stance here is that the US should try to soften its stand on Iran, befriend it and nurture it as an alternative access point to Afghanistan. India is already doing it. Once there is trust building, US will probably find it easier to broker some kind of understanding between Israel and Iran.

Why not give peace a chance without having to use force and cause death and destruction?

Since Fox news told you so, it must be correct!!!

But if you are willing to open your eyes...

1) Iran was the second Muslim country to recognize Israel.
2) Relations deteriorated after the Shah was overthrown.
3) Popular sentiment in Iran is still pacifist and tolerant of Jews as a people and Israel as a nation.
4) Those setiments would greatly improve if the Palestinian issue was addressed and settled amicably.
5) The Ayatollah is a phase in Iranian administration, they wont last and it does not need American intervention to end it.
6) If the US just backed off and removed sanctions, the people of Iran would bring to an end the whole business of the Ayatollah irrespective of the depths and strengths of its establishment.
7) Dont try to preach democracy to Iran. Todays Iran was yesterdays Persia. When the Europeans were fighting the plague and snatching food from each other, the Persians had perfected a form of democracy that worked, very unlike the slave trade corporate bullshit that 'modern' America is run on. In fact Persians practiced democracy in 5000 BC but thats obviously a point that you are going to laugh off.

Israel and Iran will settle their differences, as long as the US stays the hell out.

Iran had the first democratically elected govt. in the middle east with a progressive constitution back in the 1951. Mohammed Mosaddeg was the PM and had wide popular support.

The US and UK used their intelligence agencies under the TPAJAX Project to overthrow Mosaddeg and establish the Shah of Iran. Possibly the first case of regime change. And the only reason for that was because they were not happy with Mosaddeg taking an independant and pro-Iranian stance on the oil industry where a 50/50 profit sharing was being demanded.

Then there was the three decades of oppressive rule under the Shah that resulted in a extremist reaction with the overthrow of the Shah and the Ayatollas coming to power. If the US had not interfered in 1953, we would have a stable and mature democracy in Iran today.

In a way, the Ayatollahs coming to power in Iran was a blowback of the US policy in Iran of the coup and supporting the Shah, just like the virus of terrorism emanating from the Af-Pak region is a blow back of the policy of supporting the so called "Mujahideen groups" in the Soviet-Afghan war in the 80s.

For more information on the CIA organised coup in Iran read here: 1953 Iranian coup d'état - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
