India beat Pakistan in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

IPOH, Malaysia: Defending champions India found their rhythm and beat Pakistan 4-2 in the 19th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup to put their title challenge back on track.

Both teams had two penalty corners in the first half but only the Indians managed to find the target in the 25th minute when Sardar Singh following up on a penalty corner rebound, slotted past goalkeeper Imran Butt from close range.

Two minutes into the second half the Pakistanis drew level when they earned a penalty stroke following a goalmouth melee. Skipper Mohamed Imran converted the stroke.

The Indians were soon back on top in the 47th minute when Gurbaj Singh ran with the ball into the 25m line and sent a cross into the D which was met by Mandeep Antil. Gurbaj scored again in 53rd minute Gurbaj.

Three minutes later Tushar Khandker slotted home from top D. Kashif Ali reduced the deficit in the 66th minute through a penalty corner drag flick.

It was India's second win in three months against their neighbour. India has four points after two matches while Pakistan have one after their opening 3-3 draw with Malaysia.

World Champions Australia struggled to a 4-0 win over Egypt in their opening match earlier which was delayed by one hour due to a heavy downpour.

Saturday is a rest day while the Australians will line up against hosts Malaysia on Sunday. Other matches are South Korea versus India followed by Pakistan against China.

India beat Korea 3-2 in Azlan Shah Cup hockey

India beat Korea 3-2 in Azlan Shah Cup hockey

India managed to keep a rampaging South Korea at bay and emerged 3-2 winners in their third match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey here on Sunday.

Defending champions India now have seven points from three matches, after their 1-1 draw against China and 4-2 win over Pakistan.

The match witnessed as many as 17 penalty corners. The Koreans are themselves to be blamed for the loss as they could convert only two of their 11 short corners.

India, who are without expert drag flickers Sandeep Singh and Diwakar Ram in the tournament, earned seven penalty corners and failed to convert any. Dhananjay Mahadik missed several opportunities.

India opened the scoring through Arjun Halappa in the 10th minute. Two minutes later Korea responded through a penalty corner conversion by Nam Hyun Woo, who had pumped in three goals in their opening match against Egypt.

India went 2-1 ahead in the 45th minutes when Shivendra Singh's shot was deflected in by a lurking Tushar Khandekar. India increased the tally in the 60th minute through Shivendra, who was adjudged the player of the match.

Korea then made several forays but the Indian defence stood strong. Korea found their second goal in stoppage time, with Hyun Woo's PC strike. India were awarded two penalty corners in quick succession in the 6th and 7th minutes. And off the second, which was cleverly worked, the ball was eventually diverted to Sardar Singh but his pass across the face of the Korean goal went abegging.

The Indians were, however, not to be denied and Shivendra, after his burst through the left, evading two tackles, sent the ball to Halappa who slotted into an empty goal after beating Korean keeper Lee Myung Ho.

Korea levelled the scores through a penalty corner as ace marksman Hyun Woo sent the ball into the roof of the net not giving any chance to Indian goalkeeper Bharat Chhetri.

Both teams created openings but failed to score and at halftime they trooped off the pitch on level terms. India got the lead when Shivendra's shot was deflected into the goal by a Khandekar.

Korea were awarded their fourth penalty corner in the 48th minute but instead of going for the direct attempt, they went for a set piece and it fizzled out. Soon, India made Korea pay as Danish's cross found Shivendra, who tapped in to put India 3-1 ahead.

Korea then made relentless forays and earned as many as five penalty corners but Hyun Woo's strike came too late in the day.

this is fantastic news. Seems that after the World Cup at Delhi India has set it's target right. Kudos to the team, they have defeated the Koreans who are today a better team than ours.

Also got Hockey stick for the kids today, they love the game especially after seeing some of the World Cup matches live at National Stadium.

India shocks Australia in Azlan Shah

India shocks Australia in Azlan Shah

India dazzled with a near-perfect performance to stun world champions Australia 4-3 in a pulsating round-robin match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here on Monday.

Tushar Khandker (19th and 32nd minute), captain Rajpal Singh (21st) and Shivendra Singh (61st) scored for India while Trent Milton (38th), Christopher Ciriello (40th) and Mark Paterson (70th) were the Australian marksmen.

With today's win, India are the only undefeated side in the tournament topping the seven team table with ten points from three wins and one draw, while Australia have six points from three outings.

Defending champions India, who led 3-0 at half-time, recorded their first win against Australia since 2003. Both the sides though came to the tournament without some key players.

India outplayed Australia in the first-half with an intelligent gameplan to contain their rivals and silence their attacks. Their ball rotation and short passes were exemplary as the attacking midfielders supported the forwards to mesmerise the Australian defence.

India did not allow the Australian forwards to attack from the centre as Rajpal, Mandeep Antil and Shivendra denied the space. That forced the Aussies to run down the flanks, which the Indian deep defence and wing halfs anticipated with perfection.

Jose Brasa's men used both flanks with wingers Mandeep Antil and Tushar Khandker with good measure while Rajpal and Shivendra led the onslaughts down the centre.

India wasted three scoring chances to break into the lead. First, Khandker was foiled by sweeper Christopher Ciriello followed by Sarvanjit Singh's double fumble at the goalmouth.

India, however, drew first blood in the 19th minute from a move engineered by Arjun Halappa and Gurbaj Singh. Shivendra took over and he pushed the ball to the waiting Khandker to apply the finishing touch.

Bouyed by the lead, India fired another goal two minutes later as Rajpal nailed home from a brilliant move crafted by a Halappa and Danish Mujtaba combination.

Australia's woes continued as the Indians increased their tally to 3-0 in the 32nd minute as Khandker found the mark again from Antil's cross.

After the breather, a determined Australians came firing on all cylinders and the Indian deep defence was repeatedly outwitted by their strikers Grant Schubert, Mark Paterson and Timothy Devin.

A misunderstanding between Sardar Singh and Dhananjay Mahadik resulted in Trent sneaking into the circle to beat Indian goalkeeer Sreejesh with a deft flick in the 38th minute.

Two minutes later, India conceded the first penalty corner, which Ciriello sank into the goal to further reduce the margin.

India continued to commit unforced errors as Bharat Chikara, Mahadik and Ravi Pal Singh failed to anticipate the Australian raids. They won two more penalty corners in quick succession but could not find the equaliser.

In the 61st minute, India scored from a counter-attack with Rajpal manoeuvring on the left flank past Kiel Brown to set up Shivendra who beat George Bazeley under the bars to record the fourth goal.

The Indians looked like to win the match 4-2 but only to succumb to Mark Paterson's strike in the last minute after incessant Australian attack.

I believe Australia rested their top players for this tournament, so this victory isn't as shocking as it looks

India thrash Egypt to enter Azlan Shah final

Drag-flicker Dhananjay Mahadik scored a hat-trick as defending champions India crushed Egypt 7-1 to enter the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament on Saturday (May 15) in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Mahadik (34th, 40th, 42nd minute), skipper Rajpal Singh (44th), Rupinder Pal Singh (48th), Tushar Khandekar (49th), Sarvanjit Singh (70th) scored for India in what was a must-win match, while Abd El Hakim Ahmed (68th) was the lone Egyptian goal-getter.

India will take on Korea in the summit clash on Sunday. India had earlier made six appearances in the final of the tournament and ended on the victorious side on four occasions in 1985, 1991, 1995 and 2009. They had lost to Argentina in the 2008 title clash by a golden goal.

Contrary to the result, India were made to struggle in the first half by the Egyptians and were denied the lead till the 34th minute when Mahadik flicked from their sixth penalty corner.

Though the Indian forwards attacked relentlessly from the start, initially they found the Egyptian defence like a wall, especially goalkeeper Mabrouk Mohamed.

Indian forwardline comprising Shivendra Singh, Rajpal, Mandeep Antil and Tushar were ably supported up by Gurbaj Singh, Arjun Halappa, Vikas Pillay and Ravi Pal Singh in the midfield but Mahadik's goal was what they could manage in the first half.

However, Mahadik's goal seemed to have opened floodgates for the Indians, who went on the rampage after the change of end.

Mahadik struck again with ease in the 40th and 42nd minutes after Halappa and Shivendra won India short corners.

Skipper Rajpal joined the party in the 44th minute, scoring from a Bharat Chikara pass.

Young Faridkot drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh then scored his first goal for the senior team when he beat Mabrouk to his left in the 48th minute from India's tenth penalty corner.

The goal was followed by Khandker finding the mark in the next minute after combining with Rajpal.

Egypt, however, pulled one back against the run of the mill in the 68th minute through Abd El Hakim Ahmed.

But Sarvanjit Singh completed India's tally just seconds from the hooter when he pushed home after the Egyptian custodian was caught on the wrong foot.

India, Korea declared joint winners

Final abandoned after heavy rain makes play impossible

Ipoh: India and Korea were declared joint champions after the cup final was abandoned a little over six minutes after start in the Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament on Sunday. India, the defending champion, leads the pool with a tally of 13 points.

Heavy rain forced the Tournament Committee to arrive at this unprecedented decision. This is the first time that the teams have been declared joint winners in this tournament since its inception in 1983.

Even the two earlier matches, which Australia and Pakistan won, were affected by rain.

The rain had abated in the second half of the Australia-Malaysia encounter. But the drizzle began when the Indian and Korean teams lined up for the national anthem. It intensified into a heavy downpour reducing the visibility of the umpires and players. The rain continued for about 30 minutes leaving the pitch inundated.

The Tournament Committee and the TD, Paul Richards, met to take stock of the situation and decided to abandon the final. It was then conveyed to Sultan Azlan Shah, President, Asian Hockey Federation, for his approval.

Stunning show

Unfazed by the reverse of an early goal, Australia produced a stunning performance in the second half to corner the bronze medal against Malaysia.

Caught on difficult and slippery underfoot conditions on account of the wet pitch, the Aussies struggled to contain the enthusiastic and enterprising Malaysian forwards.

The home team scored two brilliant goals through Hanafi and then the equalizer in the second half from Rahim.

But the sparkle of the Malaysians was obliterated by the second half Aussie incandescence. No one contributed to the success to the team as much as Matthew Swann, who also scored the first goal. And appropriately enough, he was named the player of the match.

Russel Ford whacked a splendid goal on the backhand to hoist the lead for Australia. This was followed by Kieran Govers, Christopher Cirello and Grant Schubert. In the final minute Tajuddin netted the third goal for Malaysia.

Pakistan stretched

In a rain-marred match, Pakistan was stretched by China full length up to a sudden death phase when Rasool etched the win to confirm the fifth spot. The teams were 1-1 at regulation time, and dead-locked at the tie-breaker. The verdict was decided in the sudden death strokes. Pakistan won 6-5.

Sultan Azlan Shah, President, AHF, presided and presented the medals.

The results: Final: India and Korea declared joint winner after seven minutes of play.

3-4: Australia 5 (Matthew Swann, Russel Ford, Kieran Govers, Christopher Cirello, Grant Schubert) beat Malaysia 3 (Hanafi Hafizhafiz, Rahim Mohammad Amin, Tajuddin).

(5-6): Pakistan 6 (Shafqat Rasool.— Tie-breaker — Kashif Ali, Shafaqat Rasool, Zubair Muhammad, Ifran Muhammad, Tauseeq Ahmed — Sudden death: Shafaqat Rasool) bt China 5 (Na Yubo — TB — Liu Yixian, Yang Dong, Ji Mi, Liu Xianting, Sun Tianjun).

Final placings: 1. India and Korea, 3. Australia, 4. Malaysia, 5. Pakistan, 6.China, 7. Egypt.

Special awards: Top-scorer: Nam Hyun Woo (Korea) (nine goals); Best goalkeeper: Kumar Subramaniam (Malaysia); Player of the Tournament: Sardar Singh (India). Fair Play Trophy: Egypt .
