Indian air force recently cleared air on numbers on joint development of the Fifth generation fighter , which it is currently is been developing with Russia , in a joint partner ship with Sukhoi and HAL .
When India had officially joined Russia in development of Pak-Fa , most of the design and scientific and engineering work on the aircraft had already been completed by the Russian side and not much development work was left for Indian partner HAL .
IAF had earlier asked for a Twin seater variant of Pak-fa , dubbed in Indian media has FGFA (Fifth generation fighter aircraft), which could have a second pilot ,like the current Sukhoi Su 30 MKI in Indian air force fleet . second pilot dubbed navigator or Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) was brought in to reduce workload on the pilot .
Initially plans were to acquire 50 Russian version Pak-Fa single seater variant and later develop Indian FGFA variant with twin seater ,which could be around 200 in numbers , but recently Indian air force put the figures of 5th generation fighter which it wants to induct has 166 PAK FA and 48 FGFA.
which is a total turn around from its earlier plans , what made this happen ? was question , after contacting our sources , it was told to idrw.org that HAL variant of FGFA could take time to develop and it will also require some time to start production in India .
FGFA variant at current orders stands at 48 aircraft's , but sources informed that more will be added and number will touch upto 100 in future , but the at least for the first decade of its induction into India air force , will be PAk-Fa , but incorporate Indian weapons once local productions starts in India .
FGFA will have Indian software and also European avionics and systems , along with Indian developed one .Indian air force will induct its first PAk-fa aircraft in 2017 onward and FGFA will see light of day post 2020 .
