The Indian media is very stupid. I understand we need good health and education, but your other very important priority is to protect your own motherland. And with China and Pakistan increasing their respective militaries, you don't expect India to just sit their and not do anything about it. Hence why we need PAKFA, Scorpene, etc. We only spend 2-3% of our GDP on defence, so we are not spending much on defence compared to other countries.

Yes, INDIA should invest more in the defence sector to counter the chinese development. Country's security plays a vital role in developing INDIA. These media hypes are made to get more PRP ratings. The INDIAN media is dependent upon PRP ratings for earning money......

Well we spend 1.8% of GDP on defence, thats what Air Commodore Jasjit Singh was saying in above video. Whats so stupid was that anchor was more hell-bent on stating is own view than listening to Air Commodore and other experts. And this is what average people watch who vote. No body said anything about great Indian history of last 800 or so years, when every Tom, **** and Mr. Harry screwed India of its resources Left Right and Centre. We should keep that figure stable at 1.8% or where ever it is currently, whether we spend it on PAKFA or Agni ver.5.xx is a different debate.

BTW Where did 50 Billion figure come from?? IAF Chief only said 200-250 fighters. $100 million/fighter figure is only a guesstimate. Right now its only 4 to 6 Billion(development JV cost). Remember we have to develop the plane first with Russians. It will be 2020 when IAF will spend money on buying actual planes. By then all MKI will be already built, most of MMRCAs would be there, if not all. Its only then IAF will be able to induct a completely new plane, remember it takes a lot of infra, pilot training for a new type. By then HAL will be making only two planes i.e LCA and FGFA. So money will be spent on only these two. I am pretty certain there will be no rise in defence budget because of FGFA.

^^ Sometimes, our media is so stupid and immature that I feel ashamed to produce our news media links as sources to different information. I've stopped listening to our media except for some regulations change or something related to tax announcements/share markets etc ever since the media got into a sensationalizing frenzy. Internet based defense enthusiasts are much better defense reporters than stupid media channels who cannot distinguish a MiG-29 from an F-16 or a Bofors gun from an Apache gunship (they actually made that mistake. can you believe it!?).

You have idiotic peaceniks running around always campaigning for "infrastructure","peace", "no nukes" etc. It is better to ignore dumb attention seekers and get on with our lives. These losers get prominence only when we start paying attention to their stupid antics. Before campaigning in front of our parliament perhaps they should go to China and Pakistan and tell their governments to stop developing weapons or spending so much on defence. Sore losers.. that's what the stupid peacenik campaigners are.

Someone should ask them whether India has ever invaded another country and occupied them in its recent history. They should be informed that expenditure is only for defense and not for attacking other countries.

These peace activists make it sound like we are preparing to conquer all our neighbours.

You must understand free media can only sustain itself through sensationalizing nothing stories and propogating negative views. Difference is our media turns on the country itself while media in other countries belittle rival countries.

"All Roadblocks Removed, 5th Gen Fighter Agreement Soon": Defence Minister

The decks are cleared for a general agreement (GA) on the further joint development and production of the Indo-Russian Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA). After years of bilateral discussions, the agreement is finally set to be signed, possibly with the Russian President visits Delhi later this year.

After the 10th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) today in Delhi, Indian defence minister AK Antony said, "All the roadblocks are over and soon the FGFA contract will be signed. We will get 250-300 fighter aircraft. Within the next few months, the agreement will be signed. We have sorted out all issues and have found satisfactory agreements."

Russian defence minister Anatoly Serdyukov said, "We are looking forward to the joint creation of the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) with our Indian colleagues. We have the design and other details. The draft of the contract has been handed over to the Indian side and is now under their consideration. Once the contract is signed, Sukhoi and HAL will work together."

Just a couple of days back the Air Chief said it would be 200-250 and i had thought it might be well beyond that. The Def Min has now upped it to 300 already. I think the ultimate aim to operate about 72 squads of fighters will be realized one the LCA and MCA too get operational and in full production along with some remnants of legacy fighters.

India flags delays in delivery of Russian defence systems

Read more: India flags delays in delivery of Russian defence systems - The Times of India India flags delays in delivery of Russian defence systems - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: India today flagged the delays in delivery of Russian defence systems such as Gorshkov aircraft carrier and nuclear submarine at an inter-governmental meet.

Defence Minister A K Antony and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov, who met here over the last two days, also decided to take forward the joint fifth generation combat jets (FGFA) and mutirole transport aircraft (MTA) projects over the next 10 years, under which India would get about 250 to 300 of FGFAs and 45 MTAs.

They signed a protocol for furthering of defence ties between the two nations and continuing till 2020 the military technical commission, a unique arrangement, that the two nations have.

"There are some areas of concern such as the delays (in delivery of defence systems). All these issues, we discussed over yesterday and today," Antony said at a joint press conference with Serdyukov here after the 10th Inter- Governmental Commission for Military and Technical Cooperation (IGC-MTC) meeting.

However, he said, the two sides also decided to find a satisfactory solution to the issue, with Serdyukov assuring Antony that he would take "personal interest" in the projects and satisfactorily solve the problems they were encountering.

"I am happy about the outcome of the meeting," he added. He pointed out that India and Russia were pursuing a large number of joint projects for defence systems and equipment for the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the DRDO including BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

India had bought Gorshkov in 2004 for USD 974 million and its delivery, originally fixed for 2008, has now been finalised for 2012-13 after India fulfilled the Russia's demand for USD 2.34 billion early this year.

In the case of the Akula-II nuclear powered submarine, the two sides have now reportedly postponed the delivery to March next year, though India was supposed to get it last year after trials.

Serdyukov seconded Antony's views on the numerous joint projects, but said he too had raised certain issues with his Indian counterpart, which the two sides agreed to resolve to the satisfaction of both.

Noting that there was a "great volume" of joint projects between the two countries, Serdyukov said, "it is but natural that in such a number of projects we have some delays. I underscore that it is critical to these projects."

Noting that FGFA and MTA would be the "flagship" Indo-Russian joint projects for the next 10 years, Antony said India would get about 250 to 300 of FGFA and 45 MTAs.

He said the two countries had already signed the shareholders agreement for the MTA project, while a joint venture was being finalised for the same.

"We have discussed all issues and these have been resolved satisfactorily. We are in the final stages and the proposals are currently with Indian government for some technical formality. We will finalise them very soon and sign the final agreements (for FGFA and MTAs) within a few months," he added.

I think the MMRCA will be upped to 200 fighters and maybe we will have 300 Sukhoi Su-30 when all is said and done. Either way I am very happy to hear we are getting at least 250 FGFA and it shows that Russia and India cooperation is alive and well.

Woah! I don't think 72 squadrons is a practical figure even by IAF standards. It would only make IAF redundant and too heavy to maintain. The last thing we need to do is repeat the mistake of Soviets vis-a-vis USA. 45-50 squadrons would be a big leap in IAF capability and it would be better to have cutting edge of these numbers than spending half of our total defence budget on one single branch. Instead IAF could focus on augmenting our transport and gunship squadrons by speeding up the induction process of Dhruv gunships and getting the Mi-28s ASAP to replace the older gunships.

Chinese are simply emulating USA when it comes to us and the last thing we need to do is repeat another USSR. In the end PLAAF will be bottom-heavy with thousands of medium tech fighters while we will have numerically lesser but more tech lethal fighters and internationally aware high-hours clocking highly trained fighter pilots. Strength lies in tactics and strategy and not just in numbers.

India to Buy 250-300 Fighter Jets From Russia

NEW DELHI - India has agreed to buy up to 300 advanced stealth fighter jets from Russia that it will help jointly develop and manufacture, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Oct. 7.

"INDIA WILL RECEIVE 250-300 most advanced FGFAs," Indian Defence Minister AK Antony said. (AFP)
Antony told a press conference with his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov that Russia would supply the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) as well as 45 multi-role transport aircraft.

"India will receive 250-300 most advanced FGFAs," Antony said. "These are the two major projects for the next 10 years which will be a shining example of Indian-Russian cooperation."

Hindustan Aeronautic Ltd (HAL) and Russia's United Aircraft Corp and Rosoboronexport signed a joint venture last month to develop the multi-role transport aircraft in a project worth $645 million.

Serdyukov said previous success in the co-production of the BrahMos cruise missile would spur the FGFA's joint development by India's HAL and Russia's state-owned Sukhoi Company over the next 10 years.

"The FGFA have been designed by us, the price has been fixed and the draft of the agreement has been given to India. Once it is signed, HAL and Sukhoi will participate," Serdyukov said.

He did not disclose details.

Experts say each 30-ton FGFA is worth up to 100 million dollars.

Indian Defence Production Secretary R.K. Singh said the costing would be worked out in stages.

"At present a 300-million dollar preliminary design contract for the FGFA program is currently under the (Indian) government's consideration," Singh told AFP.

The draft agreement is likely to be signed during a trip to India by President Dmitry Medvedev in December.

Moscow is New Delhi's largest military supplier but recent frictions over cost escalations and delays in the delivery of a refurbished Russian aircraft carrier have strained cosy bilateral ties.

"We have a great volume of (military) projects and so it is natural to have some delays," Serdyukov said.

The minister also said Russia was waiting for New Delhi's clearance to supply 22 attack helicopters and 15 heavylift helicopters.

"As soon as we get the contract we will provide them," Serdyukov added.

India plans to mothball its mainstay MiG-21 Soviet-era fighter jets, which have earned the sobriquet "flying coffins" because of their dismal safety record.

India is also in the process of acquiring 270 Sukhoi war jets worth 12 billion dollars and is poised to hand out a contract for 126 fighter planes as part of a separate 12-billion dollar deal for which six global aeronautical giants are in the race.

The announcement of the FGFA agreement came a day day after Antony, in a clear reference to China, warned of the danger posed by regional "neighbours" who were building their military capabilities at a "feverish" pace.

"Some nations are keen to incite threats to our unity and integrity (and) thus to successfully meet such challenges, the need for us to be vigilant and prepared at all times goes without saying and is unquestionable," he said, without naming any specific country.

India has longstanding territorial disputes with China and is suspicious of Beijing's close relations with Pakistan.

Indo-Russian FGFA programme : Current status and speculations

Soon after the first Tenth Meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC), Indian Defence Minister said "India hopes to get 45 MTA and also finalize the FGFA." He also said that "As per this agreement India will receive approximately between 250-300 most modern FGFA."

In initial phase, India and Russia are expected to sign a Preliminary Design Contract. As most project management exercises, this will freeze the design, scope the project, set time lines and suggest budget. With approvals and other documentations, this phase is likely to take 15 to 20 months.

Currently the final configuration of the Indian FGFA has not been frozen as the IAF's staff requirements will have to be conveyed to the Russian Design bureau, which is expected be Sukhoi Design Bureau. This will drive the preliminary design. This final configuration will result in developmental flights. India and Russia are expected to share all aspects of the FGFA design with each other. Since, the preliminary design is not over, it is difficult to say the extent of Indian contribution to the FGFA project.

India has been working on Next Generation Fighter Aircraft (NGFA) or Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) designs. It was formerly known as medium combat Aircraft (MCA) project. As mentioned in interviews of some DRDO officials, NFGA will require a partner. We speculate that, the Indian version of FGFA will have design inputs from NGFA studies and hence the Indian version of FGFA will be significantly different from the Russian FGFA design. India will build upon the significant achievements of the Light Combat Aircraft "Tejas" project for the FGFA design and development. This will include design, materials, and electronics. Like SU-30 MKI program, the Indian FGFA might have equipment from other sources too.

The Indian version of Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft is expected to begin induction from 2018.

India set to buy around 300 5th generation fighters from Russia

India set to buy around 300 5th generation fighters from Russia | News | RIA Novosti

India is planning to buy up to 300 co-produced fifth-generation fighters and 45 utility transports from Russia, the Indian defense minister said on Thursday.
"Over the next decade, Russian-Indian military cooperation will focus on two projects: a utility transport and a fifth-generation fighter," said Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who is on a two-day visit to India.
The jointly-produced fifth generation fighter will not be a copy of the existing Sukhoi T-50 prototype ordered for the Russian Air Force, but will be a separate creation, a high-profile source in the Russian delegation in New Delhi said.
The countries are planning to unveil a one-seater and a two-seater version of the fighter by 2015-2016.
The costs are planned to be shared by the two states fifty-fifty.
The Times of India earlier said India may invest over $25 billion on buying fifth-generation fighters for its Air Force.

NEW DELHI, Oct. 7 - RIA Novosti, Evgeny Pakhomov.
Fifth-generation fighter, which will work together to create India and Russia, will not be a copy of an existing fighter T-50, and will self-development, said on Wednesday a senior source in the Russian delegation, which is based in New Delhi during a visit to India, Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.

"Of course, this machine will not be a copy of the T-50, and how will this aircraft will be identified during work on the schematic design and further work on the plane," - said the source.

At the same time, he noted that achievements obtained during the creation of the T-50 will be used when creating a new machine.

Earlier, speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Indian Defence Minister Arakkaparambil Kurian Antony said the Indian side expects to be able to get into service its air force from 250 to 300 Indo-Russian fifth generation fighter aircraft.

Russia and India plan to create a fifth-generation fighter to the 2015-2016 year. It is assumed that they would create two versions of the fifth generation fighter aircraft - single and double. Costs to be split roughly equally between the two countries.

According to the newspaper "Times of India, India intends to invest more than $ 25 billion to equip its air force aircraft of the fifth generation.

In September, the head of the corporation Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Ashok Nayak told reporters that Russian-Indian contract for preliminary design fifth generation fighter aircraft (PAK FA) may be authorized by the Government of India before the end of this year.....
