congrats. finally it is in the air. few thoughts though -

it does not look revolutionary in terms of geometry (comparison being inevitable with the Raptor!!). stealth is obtained by

1. reducing the RCS.
2. having an internal weapons bay.
3. radar absorbing material coat.
4. more importantly the airframe geometry.

well, if TOI report is true -
Russia is the second country in the world to produce a 5th generation fighter, which is 90 per cent made up of composite fibre.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...kes-its-maiden-flight/articleshow/5512969.cms -

then, first point is well taken care. 2nd and 3rd (russia has this tech being applied to even our su 30 mki) has been taken care too.
only the last point seems to be partly taken care of, if you look at the pictures.

will wait for more to emerge.

What exactly is round shape in front of pilot cockpit?
i was about to ask the same thing mate :)
^^
That's the Infrared Search & Track (IRST) pod
that is the OLS covering 360 deg.

here, it is worth recalling Igor's post on his blog. he was, to my mind, spot on. in terms of airframe design etc. his article detailing the specs -

Outlines of PAK FA

Since the article of Alexander Pachkov ('Paralay') in Nov, 2009 issue of Russan-language 'Popular Mechanic' journal has produced a great interest, I translated the short essential of this text. Paralay is the editor of the popular site 'Stealth Machines'. The article is about PAK FA/FGFA program. Since I cannot check the Paralay's sources out, the question of information reliability is up to a reader. The outlines of his article:

1) Can hope for 10-15% PAKFA advantage over F-22 due to two decades of tech. development.
2) F-22 detects Su35 from the distance of 150-180 km but can open fire from 110 km, while becomes visible for Su-35's radar by itself and on R-77 range of attack.
3) OLS-35 probably detects Raptor on 100 km distance.
4) PAKFA's AESA radar has probably 1526 modules with overall power 18 KWt. Range for a big air target – 400. TWS/A = 60/16.
5) Active antennas in the wings and tail are probable.
6) OLS with 360 deg.
7) Backward attacking missiles.
8) Has up to 12 Air-to-air missiles (if compact) in internal placement.
9) Two internal bays for WLRAAMs and LRAAMs up to 700 kg each. + 2 bays for short range missiles.
10) While Raptor can have up to 8 missiles in the internal bays.
11) WLRAAM 'Izdelie 810' is MiG-31 R-33 derivative. 400 km.
12) LRAAM 'Izdelie-180PD' is air-breath R-77 derivative. 250 km.
13) 'Izdelie-180' – solid-fuel R-77 derivative 110-140 km. With active and passive radar, homing on jammer.
14) Short range AAM – 'Izdelie-300' or K-MD IR matrix, double range of homing.
15) Kh-58UShKE
16) Kh-35
17) 500 kg guided and unguided bombs and cassette munition.
18) Intrafuselage cathapults UVKU-50L – up to 300 kg, UVKU-50U – up to 700 kg.
19) Internal bays total weight 2.000 kg
20) With + external hardpoints – 6.000 kg.
21) GSh-30 30 mm autocannon.
22) According to the plans – 430 planes must be built for RuAF.
23) Probably price $80 mil.
24) Will replace 339 Su-27 and 300 MiG-31

I am really curious about this.

It seems like the US is the only country in the world that can produce an all glass bubble one-piece cockpit without any partitions in the middle with metallic frame edge.
It seems amazing that the Russians, French, Germans, Chinese, Swedes.......no one has an all glass plane cockpit like the Raptor.

The only 2 fighter planes that have a one-piece glass are the F-16 and the Raptor. Both Lockheed Martin products.
Is this such a difficult technology to master or was it just not considered to be important.

Let's not worry about it right now. The PAKFA is expected to go through more changes. Evolution is a part of the development.

This is the YF-22.

And the latest F-22

Look at the nose, wings, tail end etc etc... the YF-22 was redesigned many times to become the modern day F-22.

Our immediate worries should be achieving a certain amount of stealth and then working our way up over the years. It is still a good 6-7 years away from induction.

Here is a request from me for forum mods. I think we should open an all new thread for PAK-FA, since we are highly fortunate enough to witness such an historic moment and hence we should all make such moment unforgettable for a times to come. We should not forget the fact that, this particuler test flight will going to change Aerospace dynamics worldwide once and for all

This plane is a real beauty, this is the first one out whatever needs to be corrected will be done down the road, Russian aviation industry was written off but this plane will put it back in buisness, there were reports that Brazil was also part of PAK-FA anyone know about the details of this or the accuracy??

W.r.t. the post made by p2prada, just something to think about ... even if not 100% representative, a comparison / list made by "Scorpion" (via FlugzeugForum) of time between first flight and service introduction - meaning earliest date of delivery (and not IOC) of several recent types:

JAS 39
first flight 1988
service introduction 1996
= 8 years

Rafale
first flight 1991
service introduction 2000
= 9 years

Eurofighter
first flight 1994
service introduction 2003
= 9 years

F-22
first flight 1997
service introduction 2003
= 6 years

For several types we have to add some additional time as they flew at first as a technology demonstrator :

Rafale A 1986 = 14 years
EAP 1986 = 17 years
YF-22 1990 = 13 years

And now - even with the severe circumstances in Russia between collapse of the SU, ...

Su-34
first flight 1990
service introduction 2006
= 16 years

...

rage if you compare the figures one thing must be kept in mind is how much of these fighters where individually pushed by their respective countries towards quicker development the state of russian air -force cuts a sorry figure they are in dire need of modern arsenal and this is their best bet having ordered 40 odd su35bm russia is pumping money towards quicker development of the project because delayed deployment only leads to increased costs which russia cannot afford i guess the progam can develop further with enhancements from the funds made with initial sales something like we have pakfa I deployed by 2015 then pakfa mark ii around 2020 with enhancements and so on and the old ones upgraded to meet standards
if you see practically the actual wor started in 2007 and flight trials in 2010 which is very quick compared to the rest around so hoping by 2015-16 we have some numbers that can be deployed while work can still progress on improving various aspects

agree. actually i am so happy. it is a deadly beast and so beautiful. hats off to the russian minds!! :D

no issue there. spot on.

Our immediate worries should be achieving a certain amount of stealth and then working our way up over the years. It is still a good 6-7 years away from induction.
true. also looking at it, one does get a feeling that it is built with an idea of - a mix of super maneuarability, ease of maintainence (unlike the raptor), a good amount of stealth and economics of cost.

an extremely pragmatic and realistic way of looking at a solution!!

a great effort and a worthy result!! :D

well i hope a winner at hand.

BBC News 11:16 GMT, Friday, 29 January 2010

A new stealth fighter has made its maiden flight in Russia's far east.

The Sukhoi T-50 jet spent 47 minutes in the air over Komsomolsk-on-Amur and test pilot Sergei Bogdan said "it is easy and comfortable to pilot".

The jet - also known by the Russian designation PAK FA - is seen as a potential rival to the US F-22 Raptor, which first flew in 1997.

The "fifth generation" jet is designed to be invisible to radar. Russia's air force hopes to acquire it in 2015.

The new jet has been developed in partnership with India. It is seen as a significant milestone in Russia's efforts to modernise its Soviet-era military hardware.

Sukhoi's director Mikhail Pogosyan said he was convinced that the project would "excel its Western rivals in cost-effectiveness and will not only allow strengthening of the defence power of the Russian and Indian air forces, but also gain a significant share of the world market".

The company says the jet's stealth features considerably enhance its combat effectiveness in all weathers.

Its features include: all-weather capability, ability to use a take-off strip of just 300-400 metres, capacity for sustained supersonic flight including repeated in-flight refuelling, advanced avionics, simultaneous attacks on air and ground targets.
