Why is the Russian HUD with so much metal around it unlike those for Rafale

Just the one on PAKFA does not look that cutting edge,
This HUD is not from PAK FA avionics suite.
This is ShKAI-35 from Su-35S.
It is also covered with plastic/metal external covers the same as in factory packaging why don't they removed them is unknown.
All of those photos are from Sukhoi software QA center in Taganrog.

A nugget of info I came across on the Indian PAK-FA variant:

So while reading an article about the PAK-FA on an American web magazine, I came across this quote by Vasily Kashin, a senior fellow at the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at Moscow’s Higher School of Economics.

The Russian will almost certainly build the PAK-FA in numbers once development and testing is complete. However, the initial batches will be relatively small. “It’s sure to happen for two reasons: Both the U.S. and China have fifth gen and we have a big cooperation project with India, and without it, we will lose the market,” Kashin said. “As I understand, they will first produce 12 planes, then extensively test those aircraft and then order additional examples. For fifth-gen, achieving IOC [initial operational capability] is a very long story.”

@gadeshi any idea how credible is this guy? Also if you are aware, the 12 models he speaks of will be baseline PAK-FA or the FGFA/PMF?

Russia has no money to buy more than a squadron of PAK- FAs. India has no money for both AMCA and FGFA. Russia has understandable reservations in sharing PAK-FA technology. India should rope in Russia as a consultant for AMCA development and buy a few one-seater PAK-FAs (with Israeli avionics). That should sort the mess.

Let us assume that Russia has no money and so they want to rope in partners like India and Iran for their projects. For F-35 Americans have not done anything different, All the pending orders and the plane nowhere close to its expected potential.

On other hand, lets analyse indian needs. AMCA is more or less Twin engine plane that compliments LCA. Thus Tejas would be taking role of Interceptor, fighter, CAS at short range, almost all range within limited short range, AMCA would be the Medium to long range Air dominance plane (on the likes of Su-30) but with Stealthy details,

PAKFA on other hand is heavy, medium to long range plane.. India can buy PAKFA like Su-30 MKI but that would make us net importer and we would not be fulfilling our aim to be a super power, With investment in AMCA we shall be enroute to building our own plane and within specific time period.

Now the numbers of PAKFA and AMCA might confront each other as more PAKFA/FGFA we take, the lesser AMCA we might take, but surely we have to take both.,


PAKFA because we have to have a bigger stick than pakistan to beat them and at the same time develop our own stick (AMCA) to make sure that Pakistan keeps its head down. Thus FGFA will be the learning steps from which AMCA will also benefit in its development

For India, to go ahead with FGFA program bat this stage means learning to modify an existing one-seater design to two-seater, adding more cost and complexity to an already complex project.
The benefits ofsuch learning is not clear and is not reusable. India will not benefit from the design process, which has already happened.
The strategic benefit for a two-seater version is also not clear against the cost involved. That is why GOI is re-evaluating the program.

PAKFA will be something like Su-30K which India had purchased (the first Flankers that India got was Su-30K 2 seater) and then based on the user experience IAF suggested some changes and upgrades and those became Su-30 MKI. So comparing here, PAKFA will be Su-30K and FGFA will be more or less like Su-30 MKI with India specific upgrades. Since India wants to have more experience, these assembly of these upgraded planes would be in India and those would be FGFA. So FGFA will be PAKFA MKI. So, do we need FGFA, yes, we do.
We are learning design process but we cannot say we are out of the woods yet. Tejas is flying but its not commercial success yet. We are not sure how AMCA will develop. Looking at how uninterested IAF is, AMCA might have a similar "welcome" unless the GoI rams down AMCA and Tejas down IAFs throat, Use it or be retired.

Exactly. And people are heaping insult on the prototypes of PAKFA, which is akin to Su-27. The IAF knows it wants a Su-30MKI level of maturity fighter, but Indian AMCA fanboys fail to realise that the PAKFA currently flying has a long way to go before it matures and becomes the FGFA and flies in Indian colours. And AMCA will start flying after that happens. All this will benefit AMCA programme as IAF will by then have realised what is realistic and what is not..

When F14 tomcat were being developed, it struggled to be sold to foreign customers for a good old 5 years, because tomcats would have lot to prove ... but then F15 happen'd and both tomcat and eagles sales went skyrocketing. It's easy to get disillusioned and be pessimistic about our own fighter jet, since our jet has to prove it's worth. But once we start suppling Tejas in our squadrons, numbers can be very significant my friend, maybe that's why US is concerned, the growing numbers of Chinese jets, because maybe they are junk but they have strength in numbers.

Further, once we have two or three squadrons worth of Tejas, they would do there job just like Mirage did. We started from somewhere, and now we close to achieve something only few countries could do. IAF(Israel fighter pilots were doing good with there Mirage until they inducted F4 Phantoms .

AMCA will have lot of improvements by 4th or 5th prototype standard. Once both planes are being inducted, there squadrons and good training and learning would prove there worth, hopefully.

Bottom line is, it takes time, especially we are venturing into an abyss and the only light could be seen if we have the courage to held up our heads high enough.

AMCA will need another decade to fly at least. Its still a paper design, On other hand the father of FGFA (PAKFA) is already being tested and various of its prototypes are flying.,
Also the important point to note is that the Actual engine for PAKFA (Item 30) is still being tested and on it being ready an important phase of PAKFA development will be complete,
As you correctly said, at present PAKFA is flying with Su-35 engine which is only being used so that the development does not get hampered because the engine is not available (THAT WHAT HAL SHOULD HAVE LEARNT WHEN THEY WAITED AND WAITED FOR KAVERI AND GOT DELAYED BY A DECADE)

Where is AMCA? At present its just a paper plane, We are not sure about its engine, or avionics or its actual design) some day the design is frozen, but honestly see the frozen design and then later compare with prototype, it might be a lot different.

If you look at it, PAKFA is flying, AMCA is not even close to prototype, so better go for at least Su-30 MKI way, Take a few PAKFA with Item 30 engines and test them and then suggest what upgrades we need and do these upgrades in India for indian indigenous content,

On other hand,Whatever we learn from PAKFA MKI (FGFA) the lesson learnt should be incorporated in AMCA.

Honestly I would love AMCA to be a Naval plane, very like F/A-18, as you know that each F/A-18 can fly from a carrier by addition of tail hook. Each F/A-18 is identical unlike Rafale which has different version and hence Rafale B cannot fly or take off from Carrier. This can be harmful in a way but also have an advantage where the carrier can be used as advance refueling and rearming base to conduct seaborne Air dominance on pakistan. This way the nuimber of planes that can be used from carrier will not be limited to the capacity of carrier to carry, but depend on the carrier capacity to refuel and rearm them.
