Knowing Russia and knowing India, there is ZERO chance that the later will lay its hands on the so-called 5th gen. fighters before 2020.

2022, while not probable, is possible.
its better to induct a finished plane than worthless plane.
given chinese expertise in engine we are assured that at max we will be inducting fifth gen plane at the same time if not before

Russian AF to Get First T-50 Fighters in 2013

Russian AF to Get First T-50 Fighters in 2013 | Defense | RIA Novosti

The Russian Air Force will receive the first batch of prototypes of its fifth-generation T-50 fighter for performance testing in 2013, Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said on Thursday.
The T-50, developed under the PAK FA program (Future Aviation System for Tactical Air Force) at the Sukhoi experimental design bureau, is Russia's first new major warplane designed since the fall of the Soviet Union.
"The work on the fifth-generation fighter is going according to schedule," Zelin, a former Air Force commander, told a news conference in Voronezh (central Russia). "The third prototype has joined the testing program and the fourth is being built."
The T-50 made its maiden flight in January 2010 and three prototypes have since been undergoing flight tests.
Zelin earlier said that the number of T-50 aircraft involved in testing would be increased to 14 by 2015.
The fighter was first shown to the public in August 2011, in Zhukovsky near Moscow, at the MAKS-2011 air show.

Is there another source to this piece of news ? IAF is specifically blaming HAL for the delay

----
India's Version of Sukhoi T-50 Delayed by Two Years | Aviation International News

The joint Indo-Russian project to produce a fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) for the Indian Air Force is facing a two-year delay. It will now take nine years instead of the stipulated seven to develop. The Indian Air Force attributes the delay to Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), which has a workshare of 25 percent in the program.

HAL is pretty efficient in under-utilizing its human talent. No wonder it has been a significant reason for attrition.

Even a 2020 date for the FGFA - 8 years away, is good enough.

By then IAF will have: 270 Su-30 MKIs with at least 80-100 in Super 30 config. Some 100 odd Rafales. Some 100 odd LCAs. Some 60 Upg MiG-29 and 50 upg Mirage 2000. Plus around ~150 Jaguars and MiG-27s all upgraded.

Thats a pretty strong force by itself. All of these planes (bar the Upg Jags and MiG-27s which are A2G) will be competitive against the best the PAF have including its F-16s, JF-17s etc and the PLAAFs J-10 and J-11s as well. The Super-30 should be a fair bet against the J-20 as that is the exact reason why this program is being progressed, despite the fact the current Su-30 is fairly competitive against pretty much every fighter (bar the F-22) out there.

All said & done, every fighter in the IAF fleet will have a decent avionics fit - including self protection, IFR capabilities, and will be able to carry PGMs and be multirole.

The FGFA can take its time.

"We work quite closely with the company" Sukhoi ", meet regularly. To date, these contacts have moved already in the practical path, "- said Obnosov, reports "Interfax" .

He noted that "the developers of weapons systems to conduct flight tests of the products themselves have required the PAK FA . "

Obnosov noted that the development of weapons systems for the PAK FA "to solve a number of complex issues - need to agree on everything in terms of information between our products and the board," - said the CEO.

This will increase the combat potential of the group of the Russian Air Force will help to bring the aviation and related industries to new industrial and technological level, to give impetus to the development of scientific schools, to ensure a stable load of defense industry enterprises.
Compared with previous generations of fighter PAK FA has several unique features, combining the functions of a fighter and attack aircraft. The use of composite materials and innovative technology, aerodynamic design aircraft, measures to reduce the visibility of the engine provides unprecedented low level radar, optical and infrared signature. This can significantly increase the combat effectiveness in the work of both aerial and ground targets, at any time, in simple and adverse weather conditions.

Better than what will happen with Rafale.

Electronics R&D will get a boost though.

Maybe in the future we will have two design houses. One with HAL and the other with ADA. So, any 6th gen attempt will have competition.

Fourth T-50 Stealth Fighter to Fly This Year | Defense | RIA Novosti

Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is to introduce a fourth Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter into its test and development program this year, the company's President Mikhail Pogosyan said on Thursday.
"We are now testing three aircraft. A fourth will be brought in this year," he said.

Pogosyan had said earlier this year that the firm would introduce a fourth aircraft into the test program but did not disclose when.
The first production standard T-50 is due to enter service with the Russian Air Force by 2015, and the first evaluation example by 2013. The service plans to acquire 60 of the fifth-generation fighters.
The T-50, also known as project PAK-FA, first flew on January 29, 2011 and was first publicly revealed at the Moscow Air Show in August that year. India will also acquire an advanced fighter aircraft based on the T-50.

OKB Aviaavtomatika HOTAS controls which Russian sources claim to be the most likely design employed in the PAK-FA cockpit (Aviaavtomatika).
