Puts to rest BS about 280 Km range. Specifically says 400+ km. I suspect Air launched can do 600 km. The next game changer will be Brahmos-M, which can be carrier by Mig-29K also

Why should it matter when an engine is fired though? Any benefits to early ignition?

The longer it free falls the more drag is slowing it down, thus requiring more power to get it back up to speed which decreases possible range.

Nothing in this case. The kind of thrust Brahmos creates makes sense to have a clean release and ignition away from Jet's sphere to avoid Wake turbulence as jet may manoeuvre soon after firing the missile.

The drag remains constant. Also the missile seen in picture is made to negate it best possible with aerodynamically stable configuration and it floats. The acceleration again remains constant @ 9.8 m/s^2 (minimum). Only the velocity it inherited from fighter jet falls before it reaches to terminal velocity.

Therefore its a balance approached not to wait that long and too early to ignite.

Range may go upto 1000 kM. Land launched Brahmos' ranege shall be increased to 800 KM so air launch Brahmos's range may be increased to 1000 km.

With this strategic leap, IAF should integrate Brahmos with the incoming Rafale also and cut down on the requirement of Single Engine Fighters and put more energy into Tejas mk2 and AMCA.

After this, HAL should build one prototype of a medium range bomber than can carry half a dozen BrahMos (not miniaturized) in an internal bay and perform a demonstration launch like this.

Brahmos in its current form is too heavy for medium sized fighters like the Rafale. Which is why the GoI bought the SCALP alongwith the Rafale.

Yes tested successfully on a sea target 300 KM away.

Yesterday after 10:30pm on ZEE NEWS DNA, anchor Sudhir Chaudhary presented that the tested Brahmos-A could target upto 400km. Actually he said that 2 times and in the background slide, 400km was also mentioned. So he was not talking out of his mind.

Land based, ship based and sub based version can be increased for nearly 900km range whereas BrahMos-A can have nearly 600km range as max mark.
