INDIA Updated: Apr 28, 2017 07:13 IST

Indian steel magnate Sajjan Jindal met Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Wednesday, sparking speculation that he may have been involved in efforts to revive the stalled dialogue between the two countries.

The visit came against the backdrop of unabated violence in Jammu and Kashmir, which prompted chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting on Monday to talk to the Hurriyat and other stakeholders. She also referred to former premier AB Vajpayee’s Kashmir peace push and noted that Modi had repeatedly said he would follow Vajpayee’s “footsteps, whose policy is of reconciliation not confrontation”.

Jindal, who flew into the Rawalpindi airport in a private aircraft with a small delegation, was received by Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz and Raheel Munir, a businessman who is the husband of Sharif’s granddaughter Mehr-un-Nisa.

The Indian delegation then travelled to the Prime Minister’s House in the capital for a meeting, sources in Islamabad told Hindustan Times.

Later, Jindal and his delegation were driven to the resort of Murree, about 40 km from Islamabad, for a meeting with Sharif.

Confirmation of the contact came from Maryam Nawaz, the premier’s daughter who dismissed suggestions the meetings were “secret” in nature.

Maryam, seen as Sharif’s heir, tweeted: “Mr. Jindal is an old friend of the Prime Minister. Nothing ‘secret’ about the meeting & should not be blown out of proportion. Thank you.”

External affairs ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said he had “no information” on the meeting.

There was no official word from the Pakistan government or Jindal on the meetings, and reports in the Pakistani media suggested the businessman had carried a message for Sharif from Modi.

There was also speculation that the message could have referred to Kulbhushan Jadhav, the former Indian Navy officer sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court for alleged spying. India on Wednesday launched an appeal against the verdict.

Modi and Sharif could meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting to be held in the Kazakhstan capital of Astana in June even though both countries are yet to confirm such a meeting.

Reports in the Pakistani media said Jindal, the brother of former Congress MP Naveen Jindal, flew to Rawalpindi from Kabul.

A source in the JSW Group told HT that the Jindal and Sharif families have known each other for decades and this was a personal visit by the magnate. “When Nawaz Sharif last visited India for the oath-taking ceremony of Narendra Modi as prime minister in 2014, even then the Pakistani prime minister had dropped by to see the Jindals in New Delhi,” the source said.

Like the Jindal family, the Sharif family too has interests in the steel business.

Jindal was in Lahore in December 2015 when Modi made a surprise trip to the eastern Pakistani city while returning from an official visit to Afghanistan to wish Sharif on his birthday and to participate in events before the marriage of Mehr-un-Nisa, the daughter of Maryam Nawaz, and Raheel Munir.

Raheel Munir, the son of prominent businessman Chaudhry Munir, is also related to ISI chief Naveed Mukhtar, sources said.

Jindal reportedly played a key role in facilitating an “hour-long secret meeting” between Modi and Sharif on the sidelines of the Saarc Summit in Nepal in 2014, journalist Barkha Dutt revealed in her book, This Unquiet Land – Stories from India’s Fault Lines.

Dutt described Jindal as an informal messenger serving as a “covert bridge” between the two leaders and keeping them “connected even when things got difficult”.

And look what their media is saying, this is epic.

'Sajjan Jindal secretly meets Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan's Murree, violates visa', says Pakistani media

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sharif's daughter confirmed the meeting between "old friends" Jindal and her father, but said nothing about where it was held
  • Pakistani media speculated the meeting "was part of back-channel diplomacy to arrange a meeting" between Modi and Sharif

NEW DELHI: Steel tycoon Naveen Jindal's brother Sajjan "secretly" met with Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday, reported Pakistani media, adding that in meeting at Murree, the Indian violated the terms of his Pakistani visa.

The meeting, which set off speculation in the neighbouring country's media that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was using "back channels" to arrange talks with Pakistan, is now under a bigger and darker cloud over the visa issue.

Jindal is chairman and managing director of JSW Steel.

TOI reported in 2015+ that it might have been Jindal who facilitated the impromptu Christmas day meeting that December between Modi and Sharif. The government denied it.

Pakistani media speculated further that the meeting "was part of back-channel diplomacy to arrange a meeting between the Pakistani and Indian prime ministers on the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit" to be held in June in Astana, Kazakhstan, as The Express Tribune wrote.

Pakistan's Samaa TV, which said it accessed Jindal's travel documents, revealed that the Modi aide was exempt from police repotring in Lahore. Not just that, he then violated his visa to meet the Pakistani PM at his residence in the hill town of Murree.

"The Indian steel magnate headed straight to Murree upon arrival in Pakistan even though his visa did not specify that he could travel to the hill station... Jindal's visa, bearing the number 769903, issued on April 25, 2017 allowed the holder to visit only Islamabad and Lahore," wrote another Pakistani newspaper, The Express Tribune.

At first yesterday, Pakistan's foreign office spokesman claimed his office was unaware about any such meeting. Later, as almost everyone got wind of it, Sharif's daughter confirmed the meeting between "old friends" Jindal and her father, but said nothing about where it was held.

Pakistan's Express Tribune also called Jindal a sort of "facilitator".

"A common friend of Nawaz and Modi, Jindal is thought to be an interlocutor or, at times, a facilitator in some meetings between the two heads of government during the past three years," it wrote today.

Recently, senior government officials and diplomats told the newspaper that a meeting between Modi and Sharif, soon, is "very much possible" and at the SCO meet in Kazakhstan.

Bilateral tensions between the two neighbours have been higher than ever after a Pakistani military court sentenced Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav to death+"because he was an Indian spy".

Still, the two countries' Prime Ministers may well meet on the sidelines of the SCO meet because "influential countries in the SCO are pushing Pakistan and India to re-engage so as to ensure that the next summit is held in a conducive environment," a senior Pakistani diplomat told the newspaper 10 days ago.

The SCO includes Russia, China, Central Asian States, Pakistan and India. Pakistan and India are set to become full members of the SCO in the upcoming conference in June.

In fact, the two sub-continental countries were admitted to the SCO on the condition they work together to improve their bilateral ties as well as promote the interest of the organisation

"That was one of the main reasons that both Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi met in Ufa, Russia+ at the sidelines of SCO summit in 2015," wrote the Tribune.

In the meanwhile, the meeting between Sharif and Jindal has given more ammunition to the opposition in Pakistan against Sharif.
"Given that this is yet another meeting held at a high level without the knowledge of the FO (foreign office), it is high time that the people of Pakistan are taken into confidence about what transpires in such meetings," said opposition PPP senator Sherry Rehman.

Everyday they kill our army Jawans and we do talk of "SURGICAL STRIKES ARE HERE TO STAY"

and here

Again PAPPI-JHAPPI time. :doh::doh::doh:
As Clinton said: It's the economy, stupid!

And that translates to crores for both Jindal and the Sharifs in the steel business. Who's bothered about the killings? It's the money that makes the mare go!

Let's hope there are any peace talks going on in the background, we might end having a big terror attack again.

Can someone please explain exactly how people believe this situation can be solved through 'dialogues' and 'talks'? This is well beyond the realm of being naive and into the grounds of comedy.

Modi as a man is turning out to be very impulsive and I am convinced now beyond a shadow of doubt that he and Doval have turned out to be a disaster. After last year's surgical strikes, there should have been more strikes when militants had gathered, better camp protection and stronger offense and defense response . I mean is it so complicated to protect important camps. We barely managed to hold off this attack in Kupwara by barely 3 people. Compare that with how Americans have handled their base security in Afghanistan . Instead Modi is back to his usual business because of mass protests orchestrated by ISI. Also military top brass (above colonel level) is now beyond redemption and only serious purge will solve this crisis. Sending Sajan Jindal who is nothing more than a dalal to negotiate with pakistan will be a titanic mistake. The Indian mind sadly has rarely thought strategically. God forgive Indians for selecting such a jumlebaaz and his foolish ilk. They all ought to be in gowshalas not making policies which is not their forte.

Unfortunately we do not have a better alternative. Traitor scumbag Congress should never get back to the centre. AAP is out of question. Any other bright ideas?

We need to understand one thing. What happens in Kashmir or LOC is not new. It's old rivalry. What new is Chinese presence in Pakistan is increasing and it won't be wrong to say that it was not ISI but MSS (( Chinese intel) which nabbed Mr. Jadhav and asked Pakistan to take the custody.

The only way to counter China in Pakistan is lure Pakistanis. Because we understand what Pakistan can do but if China has started dictating terms to Pakistan wrt to relations with India then it's a serious national security threat to India.

And I am sure, the state security analyst in GHQ also understand this that they have been trapped by China.

When Chodi's Lahore visit, Sharif Lohar ki Mata Ji ke per chuna couldn't achieve anything and instead got Pathankot within few days. What good is he going achieve.

So they can both shove their "back channel" diplomacy in their back.

That is the problem. TINA factor is propelling Modi. Congress is natural party to rule India but it needs someone like Indira not loser like rahul. Even if the alternative comes from outside family, they should seriously consider. AAP is on payrol of ISI and Nitish is another Ashoka in making who will demobilize India. Mulayam is too corrupt and blinded by lust. So we are stuck with these stupid gaurakshaks who are more concerned about cows than humans. Also there is serious crisis of leadership in army and bureaucracy and paramilitaries as well. Years of coterie have resulted in huge leadership vacuum. Compare that to China where Xi trained for years to handle leadership is running circles around trump and jumlebaaz. I am afraid democracy is simply not equipped to handle serious challenges of a country.

It is better to avoid talk with Pakistan.

These guys are in fanatic mode and with the new found dollars from china and SaudI, Pakistan is back to its old ways of spreading anti India activities and terror.

Nothing beneficial will come out of India Pakistan talks.

I have been following your posts. You constantly bash Hindutva and Modi at the same time praising congress. Hint of subtle abrahamic propaganda showing. I have already asked you to elaborate on the divisive policies of Hindutvawadi (as you claimed) which you have conveniently ignored.

Brother I am not praising Congress of today. Congress' gave India 3 of its best leaders-Nehru, Indira and PV Narasimha rao. Today's congress is a shadow of itself but what stops them from electing Shashi Tharoor. He will be much better alternative than Modi. I fully stand by my views on these Hindutvawadis. They organize riots to gain power but when in power they are worse than criminals. All the mining mafia in Chattisgarh is BJP's gift to India. It was BJP which initially agreed to discuss kashmir's sovereignty in Agra Summit. I have lived in Gujarat and know how Modi fooled everyone with his so called model of development. Corruption of BJP ruled states like Rajasthan where Lalit Modi was shadow CM is legendary. Not to forget yedurappa, Pramod mahajan. Today BJP which talked about strong defence has appointed a part time defence minister. Except gadkari and Piyush Goyal, is there any second line of leadership in BJP. Jumlebaaz meanwhile has resorted to fudging and subterfuge and optics in his rule which has otherwise no substance. There are many things I want to write (like how they are fudging economic data) to show how foolish these people are.

Bhai Saab!!

Next time if you want to complain against something or somebody, give an alternative solution also.

Finding faults with limited knowledge is easy, findings solutions is the tougher part.
