The Sri Lankan Cabinet had been informed that owing to the failure of the Prime Minister to cope with the country's ongoing economic crisis, Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought to resign from his position.



IMF’s mission chief for Sri Lanka says Sri Lanka’s debt is assessed as unsustainable, approval of IMF financing, including through a Rapid Financing Instrument, would require adequate assurances that debt sustainability will be restored.



Schools, businesses and transport in Sri Lanka closed as people went on strike to demand the government step down.

Sri Lanka defaulted on huge debt, about $50B in foreign loans.

People are suffering from food/medicine shortages, a 138% diesel price hike and 13-hour power cuts.
