Reminds me of my childhood summer vacations at my native place in kerala where we all cousins used to get together.
We had a "well off" relative. He and his family of 2 kids used to come always by air from Bombay to Coimbatore and then take an Ambassador taxi to our interior village home. Always made a point of travelling by air only (this is early to mid 80s). Kids well dressed in latest fashion, speaking convent english, wore shiny clothes, eating appam, puttu and stew with fork and spoon. Used to give us rich chocolates as gifts. We kids of other relatives felt envious. They were so much better than us. Sigh.
Years passed. Heard the "uncle" was arrested for some shady business. Spent many years in jail. Wife divorced and took children away. Younger daughter eloped with a muslim. Son became a drug addict and remains to this day without a steady job. He bought shame to our family. My great uncle (head of family) disowned him.
I just remembered this story.
