SL has nuclear experts? Hmmm. SL talking way out of its aukat.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka wants a closer involvement in the monitoring mechanism of Kudankulam nuclear power plant and will step up diplomatic efforts to achieve this, a media report said on Sunday.

Earlier this month, India and Sri Lanka discussed issues related to nuclear safety at Kudankulam after concerns were raised here over the risks faced by the island from the project.

"More diplomatic efforts will be made soon to enable Sri Lanka to get more involved in the monitoring mechanism at the plant which has caused serious concerns in both countries," Karunatilleke Amunugama, secretary to the ministry of external affairs was quoted as saying by the Sunday Times newspaper today.

Amunugama says that officials from the local atomic energy authority and related experts need to get involved and keep the government informed.

Sri Lanka maintains that while India has the right to further its own atomic energy aims, Sri Lanka is equally entitled to pursue its safety interests.

Amunugama commended the bilateral approach taken by both countries to address concerns over the project in Tamil Nadu.

On October 12, during a bilateral meeting on nuclear cooperation, India had assured Sri Lanka on its concerns over the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, telling the other side that it was a state-of-the-art plant that was compliant with the highest safety standards.

Yusuf, every country is within its 'aukaat' to look after it's own people. We all know the limitations of the smaller countries, and we all know the capability of India, but constantly belittling the dignity of the smaller neighbours is what leads to the perception of India as a 'bully'. Good thing the MEA is far more diplomatic at handling such matters, otherwise, we truly would have no friends on the world stage.

I hope the MEA doesn't agree to SL's increasingly stupid demands. Does the US allow the Carribean island countries to get involved in the monitoring mechanisms of American nuclear power stations? Does China do the same with Japan or Vietnam or the Phillipines? Does Russia allow monitoring by Mongolia or Belarus?

SL should indeed stay within its aukaat and stop making such demands upon India.

It's another attempt to delay the project

Sri Lankan Tamils are hardly "our people".. they hate India even more than Sinhalese. As for '71 war, Sri Lanka supported both sides. Our own military units were stationed inside Sri Lanka during '71 war, and besides, we armed the LTTE against them as well. As for cozying up to China, that is what every smart country in the region is doing, trying to play both sides to get double benefit.

mate they hate us due to what we did to them in the early nineties!we literally back stabbed the sri lankan tamils, first we started to arm and support them and then suddenly sent our own Armed Forces as IPKF to fight them on behalf of the lankans!now you tell me what would you do if the GOI did this treachery to your people:tsk:!we should have supported them thoroughly but we did a u turn and started to support those lankans who had commited horrific crimes against the Tamils:frusty:!even now their little SL navy is killing our Tamil fishermen on a daily basis just for fun and the sad thing is that the GOI is doing nothing other than standing and watching the entire episode as a mute spectator!

As long as they don't do anything concrete like going to IAEA, this can be dismissed as just hot air, meant for local consumption.

I am actually very sympathetic towards the Lankans much to the chagrin of our Tamil friends here.

But this issue is purely needling by Lankans. Probably at the behest of someother power.

And what right do they have to even have such an audacious claim? The plant is in our country, our plants have proven their security measures in tsunami and it is none of their bloody business what we do within our country.

I guess the recent pandering done by the useless UPA and the support Pakistan and China gave to Rajapakse government has made them think they can negotiate anything with us.

Yusuf yaar, Sri Lanka is not capable of 'needling' India. We could make 10 nuclear plants on TN's coastline and there is little Lanka could do. MEA is playing it good, throw a bone over and keep them feeling important, happy and loyal.

Sri Lanka can bugger off. The last time I checked they hardly offered us a monitoring role over numerous Chicom bases that are sprouting all over their island.

I can understand your feelings mate. But I should add that Illangai Tamizhs have not been very charitable towards their Indian brothers have they? Most of them looked down upon the upcountry plantation Tamizhs and in fact their leadership was instrumental in stripping the plantation Tamizhs of their Ceylon citizenship.

None of the major Tamizh nationalist groups including the LTTE ever came forward to help these poor fellows who were battered by both the Sinhalese and their linguistic cousins. Many Illnagai Tamizh also possess a strong sense of superiority about their spoken and written dialect of Tamizh vis-a-vis Tamizh dialects spoken in India and have been quite outspoken against increasing influence of Indian Tamizh cinema and TV programs which they thought was diluting/corrupting their culture.

At this rate, India should demand that she has a monitoring team in the SL Cabinet so as ensure that there is safe and efficient Governance and policy formulation in Sri Lanka.

The SL Govt poses the same dangers as the nuclear plant and so it will be the correct quid pro quo.

You keep harping about Tamilians being killed by everybody else. The fact is that LTTE killed more Tamilians than most! A fact that you are not ready to acknowledge.
