See when we talk about sphere of influence we see countries like US and France build their spheres 1000's of km away from their borders. In India's case SL Nepal are not areas of interest that need to be under our sphere.

These are regions that are literally bordered with is and thus as a aspiring power they need to be secured by us. We need to control these regions in order to prevent any sort of backdoor in our backyard period.

I don't know about Sri Lankans, but I suspect Pakistanis give false answers in such surveys. Nayi nayi country hai iss liye polish maarne ki aadat hai. In reality all they are doing is RR about their own country, and when they are tired of it, they will do RR about India.

Civil war added fuel to it.
Chinese loans caused more damage

Covid was the last straw that broked camels back.
Their 40-50 years negligence has turned them into this situation

Sri Lankan economic reforms under influence from US is responsible for it.
