The Russian Federal Military Technology Cooperation Service has permitted China to re-export Russian RD-93 fighter jet engines as part of FC-1 Chinese-Pakistani planes to six countries, including Algeria, which, until now, has only bought Russian jets. Besides Pakistan and Algeria, the countries that will receive the planes are Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia.

Pakistan is the only country that has signed a for the purchase of the aircraft so far.

Sino-Pakistani fighter improved

By Robert Hewson Editor, Jane's Air-Launched Weapons
Dubai

The joint Sino-Pakistani FC-1/JF-17 light multirole fighter aircraft has undergone a major redesign, including changes to its air intakes as well as the wing-fuselage join and rear fuselage section

The PAC is establishing its own facility to build the aircraft and has been importing specialist machine tools from suppliers in Sweden, and elsewhere, to set up a better production line than the one already established at Chengdu. Work on the first PAC aircraft is expected to begin in 2006.

Kornev said that Russia has completed deliveries of 100 of the engine under a framework agreement for 500. Negotiations on the next batch are ongoing. "All juridical formalities regarding new sales are agreed upon; our negotiations are purely about commercial aspects, including price," he insisted.

Asked whether Russia has assisted China in its development of the WS-10A Tai Hang engine that is broadly similar to the AL-31F, Kornev answered that Russian specialists have not been briefed on this design and that Russia has never delivered AL-31F design documentation to China. Regarding the RD-93, which China mainly uses to power the JF-17 (FC-1) fighter, Kornev said that Russia has completed deliveries of 100 of the engine under a framework agreement for 500. Negotiations on the next batch are ongoing. "All juridical formalities regarding new sales are agreed upon; our negotiations are purely about commercial aspects, including price," he insisted.

400 additional engines will take about 20 years if 100 engines took 8 years.
Russia only negotiating 100 engines at a time.

China and Russia in engine tie-up talks with Klimov looking at next-generation powerplants including improved version of RD-93 turbofan used on Chengdu FC-1 light fighter

Talks are under way with the Chinese National Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), which leads the FC-1 project, over the possible use of vectored thrust technology on future versions of the RD-93, says Vatagin. "We believe the JF-17 project will develop further with Klimov participation," says CATIC development director Li Pei.

In 1997, Klimov supplied its first RD-93 engines for FC-1 development prototypes
