South Korea has launched its ninth and final KSS-2 submarine, manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), at Ulsan Shipyards on September 7th. The Son Won-il class submarine was named Sin Dol Seok, after a Korean admiral who led the country's fight against Japanese aggression in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
The submarine is a German (TKMS/HDW) Type 214 design displacing 1,800 tons and incorporating diesel AIP (Air-Independent) propulsion. Hyundai Heavy Industries has built a total of six submarines in the class, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) having built the other 3 submarines in the class. Sin Dol Seok will be officially handed over to the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy) in July 2019 given the successful completion of dock and sea trials.
South Korea ordered the first batch of three Type 214 submarines in 2000. A second order was placed in 2009 for an additional six units, which feature improvements in the autonomy provided by the AIP system.
The KSS-2 / Type 214 submarines of the RoKN have a length of 65 m., a beam of 6.3 m, a draught of 6 m. and are capable of reaching a depth of 400 m. Their crew is comprised of 40 people. Their weapons include mines and White Shard torpedoes which are launched from eight 533 mm. tubes. South Korea's news agency Yonhap reported that Sin Dol Seok is "Equipped with South Korea's indigenous 1,000-kilometer-range cruise missile".
The ROK Navy will begin to introduce the follow on 3,000-tons submarine class KSS-III in 2020.
