I've been doing some research about how the various Indian passenger aviation agencies are doing, I've been staring at some huge numbers ever since and after I managed to compile a list based on available sources on the open web...I decided to take a look at how the things are going with our Western neighbour. The sheer difference between the numbers somewhat baffled me.

Unlike the Indian civil aviation sector which is growing at a tremendous pace (look at the number of aircraft on order by each airline), the same scale (or something atleast proportionate to their current fleet size) fails to show up in the Pakistani sector. I don't understand - there is HUUGE talk across the border about growth of economy and what not, but why doesn't this reflect in any quantifiable manner in this crucial sector which is an integral part & indicator of growth? Have a look -

Indian Airline: ac currently in service; ac on order; total

  • IndiGo: 131; 411; 542
  • SpiceJet: 52; 206; 258
  • Jet: 114; 89; 203
  • GoAir: 25; 139; 164
  • Air India: 113; 24; 137
  • Air India Express: 23
  • Vistara: 13; 7; 20
  • AirAsia India: 8
  • AllianceAir: 11; 3; 14
  • AirOdisha: 7
  • TruJet: 4; 1; 5
  • Air Carnival: 1
  • FlyEasy: 1; 1; 2
  • Ventura AirConnect: 2
  • ZoomAir: 1
  • Chhattisgarh AirLink: 3
  • ClubOne Air: 1
  • Confident: 1
  • Taj Air: 3
  • BlueDart: 14
  • QuikJet: 1
Total: 529 in service, 881 on order. 1410 planes in total.

Note:
Only fixed-wing aircraft are taken into account. The list may not be 100% accurate and yes, by the time all the ordered aircraft are delivered, some of the ones in service right now will be retired/sold off to third parties. But this is all relative and the numbers tell us how many aircraft are being talked about in general.

Pakistani Airline: ac currently in service; ac on order; total

  • PIA: 32; 8; 40
  • AirBlue: 8
  • Aksari: 1
  • ASSL: 5
  • Princely: 2
  • SereneAir: 3
  • ShaheenAir: 16; 3; 19
  • StarAir: 3
  • VisionAir: 3
Total: 73 in service, 11 on order. 84 planes in total.

1). Pak airlines currently have 13.79% of the number of aircraft Indian airlines currently have.

2). The number of aircraft on order by Pak airlines is only 1.24% of the number of planes on order by Indian airlines.

3). In total, Pak airlines have 5.95% of the aircraft (in service & on order) of Indian airlines.

Btw, I'd like to take this opportunity to appreciate just how good the two top private airlines in the country, IndiGo and SpiceJet, are doing. These two airlines have recently concluded orders of 450+ twin-jet passenger planes between them (250 Airbus A320neo for IndiGo and 205 Boeing-737MAX for SpiceJet) with a combined worth of nearly $50 billion, which also represent some of the biggest orders the two aircraft giants Airbus & Boeing have ever received, both in terms of value & number of airframes. Having traveled in them both, I can personally say these two companies are currently at the top of their game and seriously deserve all the praise they get & more...especially in comparison to the likes of state-run Air India, which is, well, meh...

  • BOM (Mumbai): 45.15 million (over 7 times busier than Karachi airport)
  • BLR (Bengaluru): 22.18 million (this alone outdoes Lahore + Karachi + Islamabad + Peshawar + Sialkot)
  • MAA (Chennai): 18.36 million
  • CCU (Kolkata): 15.81 million
  • HYD (Hyderabad): 14.33 million
  • COK (Kochi): 8.95 million

We should not compare ourselves with weaker ones. Always aim high.
This comparison is relevant because according to Paki superiority-complex, as the sole custodian of stopping the Indian hegemony in the region, Lahore and Karachi (Pakistan's two biggest cities) should be on-par with India's top-10 airports in passenger traffic. They don't even match India's top-10. Passenger traffic is indicative of prosperity.

In terms of population, Lahore and Karachi are in the league of India's major cities. The distance between them warrants air-travel, too. Yet they are way out of India's league. Heck, Hyderabad-Bengaluru (490 km apart) air-traffic is double that of Lahore-Karachi air-traffic. Delhi-Mumbai sector is 14x that of Lahore-Karachi.

Well these numbers don't surprise me Pakistan is smaller than India and only has 4 to 5 major cities, on top of that their terrorist regime severely affects tourism.

All this problem will be solved when we annex Sindh, POK and free Baluchistan:balleballe:

They don't need all these things.... they have their atim bamb . They can also boast of some of the best terror training facilities in the world. Their sucide attackers are going global and gaining much fame for their country, london was the most recent.

Also pakis are one of the best liars in the world. Its a shame no lying competition. They can morph their own reality something which India isnt capable of.

Also they have CPEC, the most strategically important project in all of multi universe.

Pune airport is tiny. To think that it alone has more footfalls than Karachi is mind boggling.

That's because it's built and operated by the Air Force, and they've completely run out of land. There is talk of a new greenfield airport along Mumbai-Pune expy, but it's as much a unicorn as the Navi Mumbai airport along the same road. Maharashtra is a very big state with very bad land management.

Delhi (DEL) - Indira Gandhi International Airport. Four terminals (3 active, 1 under renovation), 3 active runways.

Upon zooming into the last picture I see a crescent and a star. Any idea what that is inside the airport?
