These 747 should have been transferred to Air force comms flight long ago

Right now Air India has four active B747-400 aircraft. All four are tasked with ad-hoc Hajj flights from DEL, BOM, HYD, COK, and LKO to Jeddah. Their average age is 19 years, which is less than the average age of the B747-400 of British Airways which do several Transatlantic sectors, however, Air India opted for cheaper Pratt & Whitney engines compared to more reliable Rolls-Royce ones which pull British Airways 747s, so Air India isn't using B747-400 for regular long-haul services. Occasionally the best B747-400 is pulled out for use as Air India One by the Prime Minister's Office.

I think We will be using IL-76 for the Engine testing in future ...right now i think DRDO is going to do with Dornier Do-228 ...

We still have some long way to go especially with 1.3 Bn Population ..when we compare it with 1.3 Bn population of China ..Here is what few chinese Airlines Fleet size ...Huge i would say ..

Air China : Fleet 319 Order 20, A330: 55, B747: 10, B777: 27 and B787: 8
China Eastern : Fleet 458 Order 235, A350 20 in Order and B787 15 in order
China Southern: Fleet 509 Order 206 , A380 5 in fleet and A350 20 in order .
Hainan Airlines: Fleet 181 Order of 23 , A330 13 in fleet and B787 10 in fleet and 12 in order
Juneyao Airlines: Fleet 59 Order 5 ..All Narrow body fleet of 320s 5 787 in order
Shandong Airlines:Fleet 103 Order 44 ..All Narrow body fleet of B737
Shanghai Airlines :Fleet 87 , Mix of A320 & 737 in fleet
Shenzhen Airlines:Fleet 172 Order 6 , All A320 fleet and 6 A330 in order
Sichuan Airlines : Fleet 123 Order 61, A330 10 in fleet

Well that s a lot of Metal birds in the air inside china ... Huge infrastructure they had created for air travel and making use of the economic growth

I still hate to see where Air india is today its fleet size could have gone easily above 150 to 200 if Praful patel and others didn't screwed it royally thanks also to babudom ...Giving away lucrative high load ME routes to the GCC carriers like EK,EY,QR

Air india is very crappy carrier.Not VFM,better go for jet airways or indigo.........................
