Effective range is basically how far it can shoot
Scope or no scope doesn't make a difference in reach of the bullet, but accuracy
Usually an AK-47 has iron sights that range upto 800m, but it will be useful as a suppressive fire only and not pin point shooting.

finally y'all. by the way effective range is said to be 300m. does it mean 300 without scope? cud it be increased with suitable attachments??

but it seems like it wud take another 5 yrs for localized production

7.62x39 pill is not that efficient, after 300 yards it drops like a stone. I am exaggerating here but after 300 meters you wont be consistently hitting targets. It also gets affected by wind very easily. Modern cartridges like 6.5 grendel have solved these issues.

Tell this to generals sir, they could have chosen 6.8

It simply means only up to 300 meters the drift due to wind and drop due to gravity is low enough to easily compensate by using iron sights.

Add a good optical sight and match grade ammo, and you'll be able to stretch that range to 500 meters. But you'll have to put a considerable amount of effort in calculating your zero.

You can also shoot effectively up to 1000 meters with an AK, but then a significant amount of time would be needed in calculation. You'll need range, the velocity, the angle to accurately calculate a parabola and use the gun like mortars.

Effective range means the maximum distance we can engage with minimum of additional equipment and not caring much about drift and drop.

The only problem with 7.62x39mm is that it has a poor velocity to mass ratio.

No major nation has adopted it yet.
It doesnt matter if other countries adopt it, we need to see of it works for us. The problem is cost, we already hai 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 stocks in our country and i believe we manufacture them here too. A new cartridge will either require transfer of technology or local r&d. Money matters alot, in India we dont care how efficient a individual soldiers is, if a rifle shoots lead and is reliable its enough for our decision makes. Comfort, ergonomics, recoil is not a concern. The Jawan will get used to it or make do with it. Another thing is 7.62 nato has alot of recoil but the average joe isnt going to complain, in their mind higher recoil means more damage or knockdown power to the enemy and that is all that matters. 6.5 creedmore would have been far better for us because it can fit in a 7.62 nato rifle, all you need is a barrel change and it has less recoil but it will cost alot of money.

ARDE is working on it so might see something down the lane. Also bro decision makers are not kids you guys call them wrong like anything, might agree or not but they have experience with both 5.56 and 7.62 and from their experience they like the 7.62 and probably thats the reason avg soldier carries AK to more places where he can apart from CI/CT jobs.

Serbia isnt a major nation
Does firearm tech and performance depend on which nation produced it and/or adopted it ?
if that's the case Austia also isn't a major nation but their AUG literally brought bullpup config into mainstream,

certain plastic salesman from same state who used to sell curtain rods made polymer framed pistol of his own and branded behind his name and look how it changed contemporary pistol market that even hundreds of years old sleuths had to bring their own designs in competition

There are lots of factors behind 6.x mm adoption hesitation;
one major factor being proliferation of 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm etc weapons that would take lots of monies to replace,
and yet Serbians are investing in it for good future,

also don't forget our major nation India had these tall ambitions to make its own assault rifle that had AUG like quick change barrels, polymer magazines so a soldier could look how much ammo is there in it and common rifle platform to replace all different class of weapons with,
and did a very average job about it,
finally importing "NEW" russian rifles to replace it
Serbians OTOH have been mostly aatmanirbhar in that regard heck exporting their arms in international market in huge numbers already...

ARDE is working on 6.x so you might see it in future and cost as pointed out by @ManhattanProject is a big factor too for now we will have to import those.
