North Waziristan, the former semi-autonomous region, is now a part of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The district remained a hostage of Taliban and other local and foreign militants who had sanctuaries in the region from where they trained militants, store weapons and masterminded terrorist attacks.
