Preparedness? Great! Preparedness with antiques like t55s and 72s. It seem that the army has no information as to what became of the iraqi army in the gulf war.
T-55s if you are unaware are in the museum not in active service.
The T-72s are not 'antique' as you mentioned. They have been upgraded under Project RHINO aimed at re-equipping 1,500 T-72M1 tanks. The upgrade program provided for :
• A new fire control system: the Drawa-T from PCO-Cenzin of Poland. The Drawa-T is present on the Polish PT-91 tanks, their much improved variant of the T-72, and a muzzle reference system.
• A thermal imager integrated with the Drawa-T fire control system, supplied by Israel's El-Op.
• DRDO's and BEL's (Bharat Electronics Ltd) state-of-the-art frequency hopping combat net radio, manufactured by BEL.
• A fibre optic gyro-based navigation system: BEL's advanced land navigation system.
• Laser Warning System: Designed by DRDO, BEL and Indian Industry, to be manufactured by BEL.
• Explosive reactive armour,
• New radios manufactured by Tadiran or GES Marconi and an improved NBC protection system.
• The tank's stabilisation has been upgraded - the gun control system by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. and Electronics Corporation of India Ltd.
• A new Integrated Fire Detection & Suppression system has also found its place in the upgrade.
• Improvements to the tank's Nuclear Biological & Chemical protection.
And the MoD has just approved the procurement of 1,000 new engines for the T-72M1 Ajeya MBT in September 2018.
There's more but enough to give you an idea that the the upgraded T-72s are not antique and not being junked just yet. They have a lot of spunk still left in them.
