India and Singapore celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.

Singapore President Tan Keng Yam will make a state visit to India in two weeks to mark the golden jubilee of bilateral ties, a minister has said. "President Tan Keng Yam will visit Delhi in two weeks' time where he will meet Indian leaders and continue to build on bilateral engagement between the two nations at the highest levels," Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said yesterday. India and Singapore celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.

"India occupies a special place in Singapore's history. 50 years ago, in August 1965 when we became independent, India was one of the very first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Singapore," Lui said to some 1,000 diplomats and business community leaders at India's 66th Republic Day reception.

He also recalled India's pivotal role in Singapore's entry into the Non-Align Movement and the visit of Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to India in September 1966, which was one of his first official visits.

Lui underlined the strong ties between the two countries over the five decades. "Our relations have progressed steadily and today we share broad base and multi-faceted bilateral ties. Our defence forces share strong ties.

A long standing people-to-people link has continued to grow and flourish over the years," Lui said, who was guest-of-honour at the Republic Day reception hosted by the High Commissioner of India Vijay Thakur Singh. Lui also recalled the high level of engagement between the two countries and official visits made by Ministers from both the countries in last year.

He highlighted Singapore's recent ventures into India which included Singapore's participation in the development of a smart capital city for Andhra Pradesh and Vistara, the venture between Singapore Airlines-Tata Group.

Yam, 74, is the seventh President of Singapore in office since 2011.

With land and airspace being a scarce commodity in Singapore, it's increasingly utilising Indian military facilities to train its own small but high-tech armed forces under special agreements signed in 2007 and 2008.
India, for instance, provides facilities to the city-state for exercises of mechanised forces at Babina and artillery at Deolali ranges as well as for fighters at the Kalaikunda airbase in West Bengal. The two countries also regularly hold the Simbex naval wargames, which have graduated from being purely anti-submarine warfare exercises to complex ones involving multiple facets of operations at sea

Good to see India having friendly and warm relations with its neighbors!

The recent Singapore is like a new (better) Dubai.
I would agree with that. Singapore positively thunders with its own prosperity. Anyway, the 50-year mark of Indo-Singaporean bilateral relations of these two naturally close post-colonial countries is a conspicuous milestone.

Singapore to Have Indian Heritage Centre

NEW DELHI: Singapore will soon have an Indian Heritage Centre that will testify the role Indians have played and continue to play in that country. This was stated by Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam here today as he pressed for enhancing the cultural ties between the two countries. "A new Indian Heritage Centre, which will open soon in Singapore also testifies the key role that the Indian community has played and continues to play in Singapore story," Yam said while inaugurating the Perankan World exhibition at National Museum here. He said a Indian culture festival would be hosted in Singapore later this year. Holding that India and Singapore have historical cultural relationship, the Singapore President stressed on sharing of experiences for better understanding between the two countries. "The more experiences we share the better our two countries would be able to understand each other," he noted. Yam also recalled the cooperation between the cultural institutions in India and Singapore. "Our cultural institutions have a long history of close cooperation. Singapore's National Heritage Board has worked with Museums in India for more than 20 years," he added. The exhibition, "The Peranakan World -- Cross-cultural Art of Singapore and the Straits of Malacca" began today and will run till March 25 at the National Museum. The Peranakan Chinese are descendants of southern Chinese traders who settled in Southeast Asia and married local women. Their culture is rooted in Chinese traditions, but with strong influences from Southeast Asia and Europe.

Singapore is one of India's strongest allies in the region. A peaceful and very prosperous country, it is one country that has immense further trade and strategic cooperation potential.

Their city planning is the best on earth. In one city, they have everything even countries 20 times their size don't have.

Manufacturing, reselling, shipping, commercial markets, malls, race tracks you name it and they have it.

Singapore should be bagged for replanning of tier-2 towns and cities in India.

I would love my Gangtok to look as organized and gleaming as Singapore.... and retain the green and nature's bounty that we have. :D
