India has banned import of milk and milk products, certain mobile phones and a few other items from China after finding them sub-standard or not following security codes. Should this ban be extended to all chinese goods or at least imposing heavy anti dumping duties on chinese goods.

Ban all unnecessary goods like the ones sold on street which is just creating more pollution and also sub standard goods which do not quality Indian standard.

I agree.

There has to be a price for opposing India at NSG and UN. Also those pin pricks they undertake at the northern border are unwarranted upsetting the apple cart.

Moreover, Indian businessmen would find ways to make comparable products in India.

I said this long time back. Why is India exporting raw materials to PRC? They buy our iron ore, then sell steel at cheap prices, thus hurting our steel exports. It is the local iron ore lobby that has got the government by the throat. This has been going on for a very long time.

I would say 70 percent of things we get from China here in Canada is decent but disposable and average. Western manufacturing is way way better and we in the west prefer western manufacturing just can't afford it lol.

Maybe india should try to produce better quality instead of bwgrudging the Chinese and hurting their low income people

Economically Chinese products have 20-40% advantage against Indian products and our manufacturing sector is being destroyed. We need to Raise customs duty from 10% to 50%. Estimated benefits to Chinese goods are:-

Low interest 8-10%
Better Logistics infrastructure 5-8%
Cheaper electricity 6-12%
Tax and subsidy benefits 5-10%

This advantage is even before dumping of goods. For instance USA has imposed 500% duty on some Chinese Steel products but we have imposed only 20%

Well, it is because that Chinese steel producers are willing to pay a higher price for these Indian iron ore than India steel companies. At the meantime, they are selling steel at a lower price to Indian customers comparing to Indian competitors.

So, banning Indian raw materials export won't help Indian economy that much. It will only benefit Indian steel companies at the cost of Indian iron ore producers and Indian customers.

Tariff can be impose but a better option will be more flexible labor law and more tax breaks to allow manufacture to reduce their operating cost

I don't think Chinese goods should be banned in any way. may be some which are hazardous.

Almost every electronic goods sold in India are "Made in china".

Also, some Chinese companies are making good products. SO no point creating a barrier for them.

Many Indian cry competition and merit. They don't care if other students are underprivileged or poor or did not have access to good education. Sometimes they don't even respect weaker students.

So what happened now. China doing better than Indians in the competition.
why are you crying that Indians are in underprivileged condition?

China through hard work and cooperation among themselves created a favourable environment for capitalism to flourish.

Tough quality norms hit imports of Chinese toys

Toyimportsfrom China have dropped to less than a half, according to industry estimates, since the government introduced tough quality criteria and mandated certification of compliance by accredited agencies from September 1.

This has hit supply and pushed up retail prices 8-14 per cent, while wholesale prices have risen about 30 per cent, executives said, cautioning that further increases are likely.

Supply is likely to be hit further during the festive season right up to Christmas, Mattel Inc, Future Retail and other retailers said, pointing to the paucity of infrastructure in the country to test imported toys and issue Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifications.

“There has been a drop of more than 50 per cent in imports of Chinese toys since the government introduced the norm,” said Manish Kukreja, president of All India Toy Manufacturers Association.

“India imports four-five lakh stock keeping units (SKUs) annually. SKUs are actually varieties of toys. There are only three to four National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited laboratories in India which can test 100 -150 SKUs in a week.”

Chinese toys account for an estimated 70 per cent of India’s Rs 5,000-crore toy industry.

India needs a massive upgradation of infrastructure to handle the huge volume of toys, executives said.

“The new import notification insists on conformance to the revised Indian standards and procuring certification only through NABL-accredited labs. However, not only are there thousands of SKUs in the Indian market, but also the testing ecosystem and infrastructure will have to be scaled up to meet the new testing mandates,” said Ishmeet Singh, country manager-India, Mattel Inc. “This will no doubt delay the availability of toys to children in the immediate months of festivals.”

The comprehensive notification issued on September 1 prescribes criteria for physical and mechanical properties, chemical content, flammability, and testing for indoor and outdoor toys for both electrically and mechanically operated ones. The notification by the Director General of Foreign Trade said import of toys would be permitted freely only if the manufacturer abided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) benchmarks.

Rakesh Biyani, director, Future Retail, said: “The consignments are getting stuck at the customs because of this new restriction norm. We import toys that are safe according to international standards. Now, those toys will have to comply by the Indian standard, which is almost same as the international standard. In the long run, the process will get delayed and availability of toys at our stores will dwindle. If this situation continues, there will be a drop of 50 per cent in toys in November at our stores. The new norm should become effective from April 2018.”

Biyani said that prices have risen up to 14 per cent and may go up further.

even the present goi is taking rather a loooong time to resolve this issue

the matter is NOT BEING TAKEN SERIOUSLY AT ALL !!

for the sake of some business people and molly-coddled consumers, for their sakes, our jawans and military are at a 60 billion dollar disadvantage ANNUALLY

our industrial braves are being put down by ccpchina dumping and government assistance ....our industry cant develop

nirmala was attempting some cosmetic measures to solve ,..... had some meetings then transferred to defence where she wears sari and cosmetics to say hello to chinese at border ....w-t-heck is going on ??

meanwhile raga baba has private meetings with ccp-prc ambassador together with robert V .......what is this ?

seems that bjp only slightly better than congi .....building huge statues for this that and the other but huuuge bal of payments losses to ccpprc are not being tackled ....mostly cosmetic measure by bjp ??

i hope im wrong

ps neither does Jaitley even MENTION the problem .....???????? no doubt some measures are being taken but it seems hit and miss kind of thing ....we need a
co-ordinated approach with the ENTIRE nation getting involved ..... every citizen should have the matter on their lips .... it should be a national talking point to the point that those in coffee.-shops are discussing the issue , pressing the goi to do more , much more and the people being willing to make sacrifices in their purchasing choices to get the project rolling

everyone should realise that this is as much warfare as the pushing and pulling at Doklam, this is AS IMPORTANT as the physical war .... losing this economic war results in 1962-type walk-over victory for ccp-prc

Why cant India blindly ban Chinese Goods? Govt says WTO prevents them.

But quest to be asked is, did WTO ever prevent china from blindly banning companies/products in pursuit of their interests? The answer is No.

So is the WTO the only reason? Or its the big fat corporate lobby who prefers cheap hassle free imports over locally sourced expensive option.

Gujju Ajanta with a blink of an eye had become Chinese Orpat. Once hardcore indigenization messiah Tata Group, today is very satisfied with just having Croma, Voltas labels on Chinese imports. And not to discount the small traders who bring stuff from China by weight in cheap! Consider all of them, the import lobby is much bigger than pro local manuf lobby

In India land labour and infrastructure is a mess right now. Modi is solving them one by one. Only then can be we actually start replacing Chinese imports.

Without having proper replacement mechanism banning chinese import would hurt in the short term and hurt might affect 2019 election now.

Modi is raising non tarrif Barriers and anti dumping duty for now.
After 2019 there is a clear window for giving chinese a jolt. By then all big reforms would make ground fertile for manufacturing and then banning / barring chinese goods in certain categories could actually be replaced domestically at fast pace.

Banning goods without having a reasonable domestic alternative ( +10% price range) and manufacturing friendly ecosystem is not prudent.
