Seven people die in firing in Lalgarh, CPM blamed

IANS, Jan 7, 2011; Times of India

LAGARH: Seven people were shot dead and 12 wounded near this Maoist hub in West Bengal Friday, sparking allegations that the killers were sheltered in a camp set up by the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM). The Marxists denied involvement.

The Trinamool Congress shot off letters to home minister P Chidambaram and the Central Election Commission while the Congress demanded chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's resignation over the incident, 200 km west of Kolkata in West Midnapore district.

"Seven people have been killed in firing by miscreants in Netai village. We are conducting raids. So far no one has been arrested," said West Midnapore additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Sukesh Jain.

"The injured have been rushed to Midnapore medical college and hospital. Three of them died," said Jain. Additional director general of police Surojit Kar Purakayastha said two people had been arrested.

Home secretary GD Gautama said the incident was a fallout of political tensions between the CPM and the Trinamool in the area. "As per reports received, there was no involvement of Maoists."

According to villagers, the incident took place when hundreds of villagers surrounded a camp of armed CPM cadres housed in local leader Ranjit Dandapadhay's house.

The CPM cadres then opened fire, the furious villagers added.

"At least 20 people were injured, of whom eight sustained critical injuries. Later, seven people, including a woman, succumbed to their injuries," a villager and Trinamool Congress supporter said on the condition of anonymity.

He alleged that the CPM set up the camp to shelter armed cadres and threatened the villagers to provide food and send their children to the camp so that they could be trained to fight Maoists at night.

Hospital sources said a woman, identified as Phoolkumari Maity, and a man, Sourab Ghorui, died while being taken to hospital. Dhrubu Goswami and Anup Sen succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

Three men - Shambhunath Ghorui, Dhiren Sen and Kabul Patro - died on the spot.

The Trinamool Congress has called a 12-hour shutdown in West Midnapore and East Midnapore districts Saturday to protest the killings.

Expressing outrage, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee rushed to Midnapore town to visit the injured. She would go to Lalgarh Saturday.

Speaking at a pre-scheduled rally in central Kolkata, Banerjee instructed her supporters to stage silent sit-in demonstrations on all roads by tying black cloth on their faces Saturday.

"We won't call a bandh as school examinations are on. But I know for certain that the people will reply to these bullets through the ballot (in the coming elections)."

The CPM district leadership said there were no CPM camps in the area. CPM minister and local leader Sushanta Ghosh alleged that the Trinamool Congress brought goons from outside to capture the village.

When the villagers opposed, they fired at them, killing seven people, "including a local committee member of our party". The party would observe "condemnation day" Saturday.

State Congress chief Manas Bhunia said the incident proved that armed camps of "harmads" (bandits) did exist. "Law of the jungle prevails in the state. The chief minister should ... quit."

This is just a preview before the Grand premiere. As the election count down begins for the WB assembly polls,we are probably headed for one of the most blood soaked assembly elections ever witnessed in recent memory. The CEC would have performed a miracle if they see through this election without a bloody carnage.Good luck to all the 'bangla bandhus'.

Expect massive violence and bloodshed in WB during this election season. CPM will not go down without a fight and literally at that. TMC is not saint either. One failed state that is WB. From an industrial hub to one of failed state.

Bengal is a circus and bengalis are to be blamed for their own woes(because of their electoral choices). We have an agitation going on in AP for division but neither of the people of the two regions went to this extent seriously injuring each other at most verbal diaorhea and stupid antics but not this. The state where people casualities were highest due to political violence seems to be Bengal

Bloody politics of West Bengal

There are a few things that come to mind:
  • CPM has had its own army for more than a year. They have been collaborating with the CRPF to fight the Maoists.
  • Chidambaram knew this right from the beginning. The recent exchange of heated letters between Chidambaram and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya merely shows that neither of them have the courage to speak out the real truth. While Chidambaram has acted in the interests of Congress-TMC alliance now that election is near, Buddha is reluctant to acknowledge the presence of a CPM army.
  • TMC has been backing PCPA and Maoists and in all likelihood has had an understanding with Maoists who have been selectively targeting CPM supporters since last 16 months. Mamata will go to any extent to win the CM's post in WB, even if it means colluding with anti-national forces like the Maoists. CPM will also not give up without a fight and are known to resist any kind of attempted subjugation even if it means gross human rights violations.

If this continues, it seems WB is headed for a hung-parliament with neither CPM, TMC or Congress getting absolute majority. If TMC-Congress alliance holds, Mamata has a bright chance of being the CM. Then, however, she will be forced to act against the Maoists and we should not be surprised if she is assassinated by the very Maoists. Let us not forget Indira Gandhi colluding with Sikh extremists and her consequent assassination or Rajiv Gandhi colluding with the LTTE and his consequent assassination.

History has this nasty habit of repeating itself.
