QATARI DIPLOMATIC CRISIS. WHAT IS BEHIND?

The row between Qatar and the Saudi-led block has been growing in the Middle East since Monday when Saudi Arabia and some other countries broke diplomatic ties with Qatar. Qatar was also excluded from the Saudi-led coalition operating in Yemen.

According to experts, the rift among Middle Eastern countries that had played a joint role in the Syrian, Iranian and Yemeni crises is a result of the ongoing collapse of the ISIS terrorist group in Syria and Iraq.

The US and its Middle Eastern ally, Saudi Arabia, are deeply concerned that this may increase further the influence of Iran and organizations like the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) and Lebanese Hezbollah in the region.

In turn, Qatar has a much bigger freedom of action than its American and Saudi counterparts. Doha used to use ISIS as a tool for pursing own policy in the region. However, it looks that at least a part of the Qatari elites has got that the terrorist group is on the verge of collapse in Syria and Iraq.

Thus, they decided to build better ties with Tehran and the PMU in Iraq. The goal of this effort is to keep the influence in the region and to remove from the line of attack at least a part of the ISIS economic and military political leadership. Strategically, this may allow Qatar to keep some influence in Iraq.

In this case, the recent actions of Riyadh could be seen as an effort aimed to put an additional pressure on Doha and to prevent it from developing relations with Tehran and the PMU. Washington supports this effort, at least on the unofficial level, because it looks as a common part of its wider anti-Iranian strategy in the Middle East.

There are little doubts that Washington is also concerned that Qatar may follow the Erdogan-like approach increasing ties with the Russian-oriented alliance operating in the region.

Some experts describe the current situation is a sign of another round of escalation in the Middle East. If Qatar starts building up better relations and increasing coordination the Russian-oriented powers, it will deliver a major blow to the US interests in the Arabian Peninsula.

Commentary:

On the other hand, Trump appears to be siding with the Saudi clique against Qatar. If Qatar aligns itself with Russia and Iran, it will only weaken the Saudi clique and thereby the US clique.

The other possibility is that Trump is doing this on purpose, to weaken the Wahhabi Gulf States, thus taking them out, one by one - isolate, and destroy, if that happens to be his motto.

Putin and Erdogan both spoke with the Qataris. Let's see how this unfolds. Interesting times ahead.

Looks like US is bitten by Roosiphobia for everything USA is crying Russian involvement from their presidential elections too creating a crack in the GCC ...Wow looks like Russian hackers are way ahead of the IVY league breeds from the USA in hacking ..

Russian hackers planted fake news which sparked Qatar crisis: Report

US intelligence officials believe Russian hackers planted a false news story that led Saudi Arabia and several allies to sever relations with Qatar, prompting a diplomatic crisis, CNN reported Tuesday.

FBI experts visited Qatar in late May to analyse an alleged cyber breach that saw the hackers place the fake story with Qatar's state news agency, the US broadcaster said.

Saudi Arabia then cited the false item as part of its reason for instituting a diplomatic and economic blockade against Qatar, the report said.

Qatar's government said the May 23 news report attributed false remarks to the emirate's ruler that appeared friendly to Iran and Israel, and questioned whether US President Donald Trump would last in office, according to CNN.

Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told the broadcaster that the FBI has confirmed the hack and the planting of fake news.

"Whatever has been thrown as an accusation is all based on misinformation and we think that the entire crisis is being based on misinformation," he told CNN.

"It was started based on fabricated news, being wedged and being inserted in our national news agency, which was hacked and proved by the FBI," he added.

If accurate, the allegations would indicate Russian efforts to undermine US foreign policy, building on US intelligence concerns that Russian hackers attempted to influence last year`s presidential election, won by Trump. The Kremlin denies meddling.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced Monday they were severing diplomatic relations and closing air, sea and land links with Qatar.

They accused the tiny Gulf state of harboring extremist groups and suggested Qatari support for the agenda of Saudi Arabia`s regional archrival Iran. Qatar has strenuously denied the allegations.

Although Qatar hosts the largest American military airbase in the Middle East, Trump threw his weight behind the Saudi-led effort to isolate the emirate in a surprise move on Tuesday.

He suggested Qatar was funding extremism.

"So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off," he tweeted in reference to his trip to Riyadh last month.

"They said they would take a hard line on funding... extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!"

The CNN report quoted the Qatari government communications office as saying it was working with the FBI and Britain`s National Crime Agency on an ongoing hacking investigation.

Turkey throws support behind Qatar in rift with Gulf Arabs

Turkey threw its support behind Qatar on Wednesday, with officials saying it could fast-track troop deployment and provide crucial food and water supplies to the Gulf Arab country facing isolation from some of the biggest Middle Eastern powers.

In the deepest split between Arab states for decades, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain severed relations with Qatar on Monday and closed their airspace to commercial flights, saying it was funding militant groups.

Qatar vehemently denies the accusations.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has said isolating Qatar would not resolve any problems. Erdogan, who has long tried to play the role of a regional power broker, said Ankara would do everything in its power to help end the regional crisis.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is visiting the region to discuss the stand-off.

Lawmakers from Erdogan's ruling AK Party and the nationalist opposition MHP on Wednesday proposed bringing forward approval of a draft bill that will allow Turkish troops to be deployed to Turkey's military base in Qatar, party officials told Reuters.

Turkey has maintained good relations with Qatar as well as several of its Gulf Arab neighbours. Turkey and Qatar have both provided support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and backed rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Turkish parliament was also set to bring forward approval of a draft accord between the two countries on military training cooperation, the officials said.

Both bills, which were drawn up before the spat erupted, are expected to be approved by the Ankara parliament on Wednesday.

Turkey's lira weakened after the move.

FOOD AND WATER

Turkey's main exporting industry body said it was ready to meet food and water supply demands from Qatar, after a Qatari official said Doha was in talks with Iran and Turkey to ensure trade disruptions did not create shortages.

Grain traders said Qatar appears to have a comfortable immediate supply of wheat.

"Qatar recently purchased about 20,000 tonnes of Russian milling wheat which according to my calculations has just arrived in past days or will arrive in coming days," one European grain trader said.

The president of Qatar's Chamber of Commerce was quoted on Wednesday by local media as saying Qatar had enough food stored in strategic reserves to last for a year.

"There will be no shortage of food and other products as more than 95 percent of imports from Qatar arrive by air and sea," Qatari Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani said.

Turkey set up a military base in Qatar, its first such installation in the Middle East, as part of an agreement signed in 2014. In 2016, Ahmet Davutoglu, then Turkish prime minister, visited the base where 150 troops are stationed, the Turkish daily Hurriyet reported.

In an interview with Reuters in late 2015, Ahmet Demirok, Turkey's ambassador to Qatar at the time, said 3,000 ground troops would eventually be deployed at the base, which was primarily to serve as a venue for joint training exercises.

The text of the draft bill, which includes the agreement between Qatar and Turkey on the base, shows the cooperation will be primarily about the modernisation of Qatar's military institutions, as well as widening cooperation in training and joint war exercises.

Turkish parliament approves troop deployment in Qatar

Turkish parliament approves legislation allowing Turkish troops to be deployed in Qatar.

Turkish officials say decision will be brought forward due to worsening Gulf diplomatic rift [File: Umit Bektas/Reuters]
Turkey's parliament has approved a legislation allowing its troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in Qatar.

The bill, first drafted in May, passed with 240 votes in favour, largely with support from the ruling AK Party and nationalist opposition MHP.

Wednesday's decision is an apparent support for Qatar as it faces diplomatic and trade isolation from some of the biggest Middle Eastern powers.

Qatar faces embargoes as biggest regional diplomatic crisis in years escalates
Turkey is a key ally of Qatar and is setting up a military base in the country which also hosts the largest US air base in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain severed relations with Qatar and closed their airspace to commercial flights on Monday, accusing it with financing extremist groups.

Qatar vehemently denies the accusations. It is the worst split between powerful Arab states in decades.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has criticised the Arab states' move, saying isolating Qatar and imposing sanctions will not resolve any problems and adding that Ankara will do everything in its power to help end the crisis.

Turkey has maintained good relations with Qatar as well as several of its Gulf Arab neighbours.

These new developments are like a zig saw puzzle. Gulf seems ready to implode...these are early signs of things to come..more conflict..more chaos ..more deaths..
I still think Iran is the true target....just recently USA signed with KSA to sell $110 billion worth of weapons.
Is KSA being appointed deputy policeman of the middle east. Threatening Qatar is first show of the new bully empowered by big bully ? This movie will be very interesting as the actors are now pitted against each other...so much for the oil cartel..or GCC..they are becoming history.
ISIS attacking Ayatolla Khomeini's musoleaum....the greatest provocation to pit Shia and Sunny sects...who is the puppet master...behind the scene ...designing and implementing this horror show ? Does anybody know ?

I enjoy that we're finally seeing a war in the Middle East. It might all be internally funded, thanks to the oil rich nations hating each other for no reason the outside world really created. It would allow the United States and Israel to "let" Iran and Qatar be destroyed.

But I worry about concerns closer to home. Has Modi build his wall yet? I'm hoping that Trump can be persuaded to invade Pakistan.

I think India should keep itself distance from this conflict , if it really wants to grow. We need space and time to grow into much more mature economy. We cannot involve ourselves in this mess.

I suggest that we build a wall along our northern border and pull our people out of the Middle East. We try to lower our dependency on oil and find other sources too (Russia?).

But we should diplomatically support more military invasions that help stop the spread of Islamism.

Germany withdrew its troops from Turkey, who in turn are sending their troops to Qatar. In the midst of all of this, the USA is siding with Saudi Arabia.

I presume that this will end with war since Trump indicated that he wanted to wage a war on Iran. But I wonder how bad it will get. IS are already making some high profile attacks in Iran - it could easily turn into another Syria!

Anyone else feels there is connection between Qatar isolation and Iran attack? Perhaps an invasion plan on Iran and maybe even Qatar?

Is this an attempt to deliberately force a retaliatory action from Iran on Saudis which in turn will give reason for Saudis-USA alliance to strike Iran?

I could not verify this, all I found about the 2008 Defence Pact was intelligence gathering and maritime support. Can you link to the specifics you are talking about here?

Security pact with Qatar gives India Gulf toehold

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Oman and Qatar, days before his departure for the G20 meeting in Washington, has given India a strategic toehold in the Gulf — two agreements on defence and security have been signed with Qatar, a country that is home to a US naval base. Short of having a permanent station in Doha, India will be ready to go calling whenever Qatari assets need protection.

With this one move, India is signalling to the region its readiness to play a larger-than-before role as it polices the Indian Ocean and the waters up to the Gulf of Aden. The pact allows India to take care of the defence requirements of Qatar, including intelligence sharing and manpower training.

As if to drive home the point about its growing military prowess, the Indian Navy on Tuesday, in its first-ever action after being deployed in the Gulf of Aden, thwarted an attempt by pirates to capture an Indian merchant vessel in the region.

Given the importance of the Indian Ocean due to its sizeable maritime hydrocarbon traffic and the country's growing stature as an emerging economic power, the deep-reach capability is of strategic significance.

The Indian delegation, comprising three ministers, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, is learnt to have gone all out to get their Gulf counterparts to wake up to the fact that India is a better place — both in terms of security and returns — to invest in than the west. According to a senior delegate, Oman and Qatar were told that the Indian banking system with certain controls is a better bet than the west.

The PM, on his part, announced the $100 million India Oman Joint Investment Fund with equal equity participation on both sides with an upper ceiling of $1.5 billion for infrastructure projects — telecom, health and urban infrastructure. Meanwhile, negotiations are at an advanced stage to spell out the modalities for a $5 billion fund for Qatar to invest in Indian energy and fertiliser projects. "In the next two-three months, we will work out modalities, identify projects in the areas of energy, power, fertiliser," Singh told reporters. He said he also discussed the likelihood of Qatar either investing in fertiliser plants in India or expanding production of fertiliser plants in Qatar with assured buyback in India.

Al Jazeera media platforms under cyberattack
Website and digital platforms of entire Doha-based network undergoing 'systematic and continual hacking attempts'.

The websites and digital platforms of Al Jazeera Media Network are undergoing systematic and continual hacking attempts.

These attempts are gaining intensity and taking various forms. However, the platforms have not been compromised.

Last month, Qatar's official news agency was hacked and false statements attributed to the country's ruler were posted that helped spark a rift with other Arab Gulf states.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and several other countries cut their ties with Doha on Monday in part because of the comments briefly posted on the Qatar News Agency.

The fake report said Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a speech at a military graduation ceremony, was critical of renewed tensions with Iran, expressed the need for contextualising Hezbollah and Hamas as resistance movements, and suggested US President Donald Trump might not last long in power.

A Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) team has been in Doha for the past week after the Qatari government asked the US for help following the security breach by hackers.

Qatar's Ministry of Interior said it will release the full findings once the investigation is complete, but did not say when that would be.
