Saudi Arabia says one person was killed after seven missiles were fired from Yemen by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on Sunday. It's the first death on Saudi soil since the Saudi-led coalition began a military intervention in Yemen three years ago.

The missiles were fired at four targets, including the capital city of Riyadh, and all were intercepted and destroyed, said Saudi coalition forces spokesman Col. Turki al-Maliki in a statement. Fragments from the intercepted missiles killed an Egyptian resident, the statement added.

One of the Patriots hit the ground and one exploded shortly after launch. It seems like a rather high initial failure rate.

Official claim
  • Sunday night: Saudi Colonel Turki al-Maliki only said in a statement that "all seven ballistic missiles were intercepted and destroyed".
  • The Saudi military said three of the missiles were aimed at Riyadh, two were aimed at Jazan and one each was aimed at Najran and Khamis Mushait.

  • The Saudi-owned satellite news channel Al Arabiya aired footage that it said showed Patriot missile batteries shooting at the incoming Houthi missiles in Riyadh.
  • One Patriot missile appears to explode seconds after being launched, drawing a shout from a bystander as flaming fragments rain down on the ground.
  • Casualties: Sunday night's launch saw one Egyptian killed and two others wounded in Riyadh by a missile fragment, marking the first casualties in the Saudi capital since the war began.
  • Previous rockets fired by the Yemeni rebels have caused deaths in other parts of the kingdom.
  • Saudi Arabia says it has been targeted by some 90 ballistic missiles launched by Houthi rebels and their allies since launching a war against them three years ago.

Video analysis

  • One video appears to show a Patriot missile launch on Sunday night going rapidly wrong, with the missile changing course midair, crashing into a neighbourhood in Riyadh and exploding.

  • Another appears to detonate shortly after being launched in the Saudi capital.

  • "It's more likely that none of the missiles have been intercepted than it is that the Saudis have shot down any," said Lewis.

I can only imagine the Shit Strom that would have started here had it been the case with DRDO's AAD/PAD BMDs.

Isn't that the nature of Export Version?

From the 2nd video, 1 missile certainly failed, in the first video explosion isn't very conclusive, it could just be a very low level terminal intercept followed by a mid altitude intercept from the second missile and hit from the third as well.

Now, the Patriot happens to be among the most combat tested SAM systems and in real life scenarios SAM crews have tremendous work loads in rapid short bursts. It has had several kills, several failures.

Ripple fire is always tricky in test conditions let alone in combat, not sure if ripple fire of all missiles from the launcher has ever been tested for Akash, if not they should. That said, Patriot is still an old system with new make up, it's time to replace it. Perhaps US should have a competiton and we can offer the Akash MK-2, certainly would be the cheapest while being reliable.

Such failures can be expected in all SAMs including Akash, S-400, MR-SAM and the solution is to continue to test and test the system to beyond it's capability, if needed force failures since they need to work in high jamming, over-saturation mode, SOPs need to be clear. Missiles need to be routinely maintained & sim tested on the ground. One should start with the assumtion that 25% of all weaponry will be duds if not for proper care and work towards proactive corrective measures.

After seeing the videos of the failed Saudi PACs, they may change their minds. We can offer them the Aakash Mk 2 instead! :)
