If its true it must be some recce/data collection op near border...

The 20-kg rover will operate on solar power and move on wheels on the lunar soil. Around the same time as ISRO's test-landing at the 'Science City', DRDO has planned the maiden test flight of Rustom-II, an advanced Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) at the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in another part of the 8,000 acre campus.

This medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) UAV has a range of 250 km, and the capability to carry weapons as well as fly non-stop for five-six hours.

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard Rustom-II will help the UAV see through dense clouds. On completion of test flights, it will replace the Israeli Heron UAVs being used by the IAF and Indian Navy, according to sources in the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

As armed forces look outside for drones, desperate ADE readies Rustom-2 for flight

BENGALURU: At a time when Indian armed forces are increasingly looking outside the country for drones, Israel being a top destination, the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) a defence research and development lab marred by delays and faults is readying Rustom-II, a long endurance unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) for its first flight.

The first flight of the UCAV, which is in the medium-altitude, long endurance (MALE) category of vehicles, was first scheduled in late 2013. A three-year delay to conduct the first flight only adds to the timeline, which is punctuated by other delays during development.

ADE Director MVKV Prasad, along with other top officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) visited their facility in Challakere, about 200-km from Bengaluru on Monday, where the first flight will happen.

More than two sources in the ADE said that the director was there to oversee the ongoing preparations for the maiden flight of Rustom-II, bagging orders for which is a priority for ADE, as the Ministry of Defence (MoD) already has contracts signed with Israeli companies and talks on procuring some combat drones from the US are ongoing.

"The entire team is working on it with full force, the first flight is likely soon, but I cannot comment on the date at this juncture," Prasad told TOI, confirming the developments.

However, even if the first flight, which is likely to happen in the coming week or the next is successful, Rustom-II will need at least another year before it gets the required certification. Still not confident about the project, the ADE has remained tight-lipped about the project with no official comments offered on it.
Former ADE director P Srikumar had told TOI earlier that the Rustom-II will be an aircraft unlike any other UAV in the ranks of our forces. It has a wingspan of more than 20m and an endurance of 24-30 hours.

He had said that the UCAV, equipped with contemporary technology, will need a runway to takeoff and land unlike traditional UAVs, which makes it more trustworthy. Compared to Rustom-I, the advanced version will have enhanced aerodynamic configuration, digital flight control and navigation system.

"It will also have automatic takeoff and landing capabilities, this version of Rustom is comparable to some of the best in the world," sources in ADE said. While the ADE hopes to bag orders from all the three wings of the armed forces—army, navy and the air force—its ability to stick to deadlines and also give a good quality platform will be key.

The Indian army, which had inducted DRDO's earlier UAV Nishanth had to face several crashes and is contemplating junking it with no fresh induction planned.

They should stop trying to equate their underdevelopment projects to the best in the world. Especially after experience with Nishanth.
Regarding Rustom, wouldn't it be better if it was capable of take off and landing from highways also?

Well said, sir. Even I have observed this attitude of premature celebration. They make something that flies, they they claim that they have made a drone which can be 'potentially' integrated with weapons. Reality is, any mechanical consulting firm, with a tie up with an electronics company can make things that fly and things that drop bombs, the real challenge lies in making the proprietary technology that makes the uplink and downlink secure against enemy jammers and so on. We are still stuck with basic flight applications and claiming to have achieved total self-sufficiency. If a company makes radar absorbing paint then that's an innovation, if someone makes a new encryption standard, that's an innovation. Just making things that fly, well, if they were so good why do we still rely on Heron? not just us, even Germany buys drones from Israel. The core of what makes a weapon system lethal is its operational ability in a high signal noise/deviation environment and not everyone can achieve that.

I'm not saying this blame must be left on the shoulders of the scientists, they are doing their jobs with the budget they have, it is the information warfare department of the government which plants these stories in the media (otherwise the media has no way to know) and these stories are almost always hyped up.

Let them stick to pure sciences and applied sciences R&D and once there is any breakthrough, just pass the licence to a private company which has the manufacturing base to build it. One can't expect a government agency to build from hairpin to aeroplane. Even commie China has 3 design agencies to build their planes and here we expect one agency to make 3 types of planes.

why Rustum 1 was never inducted ? after first flight in 2009 ??

& what are the sensors in Rustom 2 ? it has synthetic aperture radars ??
