Moscow: Russia's MiG aircraft corporation has launched production of a new batch of carrier fighters for the Indian Navy, a MiG spokesman said. The MiG29K/KUB fighters are to be delivered under a 2010 contract, the spokesman said.

Under the $1.5-billion contract, Russia will supply 29 MiG-29K Fulcrum-D jets to India starting 2012.

The fighters will be based at an air field until the Admiral Gorshkov joins the Navy under the name of INS Vikramaditya in 2013.
The INS Vikramaditya is expected to carry up to 24 MiG-29K/KUB fighters.

Again the fighters will be delivered ahead of their schedule and based on ground , atleast getting used to it but what is strange is mig29k range , these cannot be used for long range action in regions away from base

we dont have to go that far; but if we have too then mig 29 can reach those places using MARS, buddy refueling, external tanks..etc. it also depends on from where your mig 29s is taking off.

yes, it can reach those places without refueling too. but it wont have enough fuel to comeback all the way back to Cochin or Bangalore. so they will have to land somewhere nearby.

I don't think we need a very long range strike aircraft since our primary objective is to make sure IOR remains Indian territory. As such because of Chinese smartness and GOI's idiocy, China already got the license to mine in IOR which means PLAN is likely to give some excuse and move in.

So we need something that not only is capable of thrashing PLAN's misadventures (apart from the obvious regime change but that's different). MiG-29K fits the bill nicely.

Yes, Mig-29k is comparable to f-18; there should some thread talking about mig29k and f-18. if you dont find one, then please start one.

these weapons are just bought in the name of deterrence but this is just an eyewash.
45 mig-29 can easily be bought down in the presence of advanced SAMs and radars which our enemies have.

Chinese PL-12 BVRAAM

R-27 "Alamo BVRAAM

No ARMs and the only one they got is Kh-31, you won't find any MiG-29s carrying it.

A very inspiring production line, quality wise. Good luck to the brave Indian Navy airmen...
Not everything needs to be manufactured under glare of halogens and freshness of air conditioner. After all they are assembling fighter jets not semiconductor based microprocessors.

Navy doesn't need an air arm as big as air force she only needs handful for air defense fighters.

Any flying object can be brought down by a SAM...if it is spotted, directed and hit by the SAM...and the Navy's air arm is primarily for anti-ship ops and at times coastal attacks, or even at times SEADs...(that too in rare cases)...and our armed force is not an expeditionary force that requires a huge naval air presence...we primarily require it for defence of Indian strategic interest, which is enough to defend with 45 Mig-29Ks+ 8 Harriers (around) and later 8 NLCAs (if it ever enters production to fly around)
