Also article mentions earlier failure. Actual monetary loss must be many times cost of clean-up.

In July, a Proton rocket crashed shortly after liftoff showering the surrounding countryside with 600 tons of flaming propellants.

Launches of the Proton were suspended for three months following the accident and the two governments quarreled over the nearly $90 million clean-up bill.

Russia to Launch Fleet of Mini Satellites in June

Russia will launch a cluster of about three dozen mini-satellites aboard a converted Soviet ICBM in late June as part of a Russian- Ukrainian joint project, contrary to reports that the crisis in Ukraine had jeopardized the program, a top space official said. The satellites will be launched from a RS-20 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, or ICBM, that has been converted into a Dnepr rocket. The Moscow-based Kosmotras International Space Company sells these rockets for commercial launches under a 1997 project by the Russian and Ukrainian governments to convert Soviet-era missiles for commercial and scientific purposes. Earlier Russian media reports said that Ukrainian enterprises — such as Yuzhmash, which converts the missiles — could stop working with their Russian counterparts due to the ongoing crisis in east of the country. On Wednesday Sergei Ponomaryov, deputy head of the Russian space agency, dismissed these concerns, saying that Ukrainian companies have continued to fulfill their contracts, Itar-Tass reported. He warned, however, that Moscow could fill the void left by Ukrainian enterprises within two to three months. If Ukraine pulls out of the Dnepr program, missile conversion could be handled by the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau, a state-run entity that builds Russia's submarine launched ICBMs. This year, the Dnepr rocket is set to launch more than 34 mini- satellites — which are typically single-purpose machines that are cheap to make and easy to replace. Yuzhmash is involved in a number of cooperative projects with the Russian space industry, not just the Dnepr project. It builds Zenit rockets for Sea Launch using a large proportion of components imported from Russia.

Russian Carrier Rockets to
Send Six Satellites into Orbit

MOSCOW, June 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is preparing to launch a group of Soyuz-ST carrier rockets of various payloads from the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Kourou space center in French Guiana in June and July of this year, according a RIA Novosti source in the Russian space agency. "The cluster launch of a Soyuz-ST, with a Fregat-MT upper stage, and four scientific satellites is set for July 10. Another Russian Soyuz-ST will put two European satellites into orbit to expand the navigation constellation Galileo," the source told RIA Novosti. Earlier reports stated that French space-launch company Arianespace had signed a contract with Russian space agency Roscosmos for the delivery of seven additional Soyuz carrier rockets. The firm said the new order will allow it to fulfill private and governmental orders through 2018. The Russian-built rockets have been sending satellites into space for several years as part of a 2003 agreement between Russia and France.

Soyuz кocket puts Russian
GLONASS-M navigation
satellite into orbit

The Soyuz-2.1b rocket with GLONASS-M navigation satellite on board has been successfully launched from Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia, Aerospace Defense Forces spokesman Colonel Alexei Zolotukhin said. "After separation from the upper stage on June 15 at 00.53 [MSK, 20:53 GMT], GLONASS-M spacecraft was taken under control of the Titov Main Test and Space Systems Control Center of the Russian Aerospace Defense Space Command," he said. The control room has established contact with the satellite and says it is functioning normally, Zolotukhin added. It has been the second launch of GLONASS-M satellite this year and the fourth time when it has been sent into orbit from Plesetsk. The Soyuz-2.1b modernized rocket was designed according to Russian technology using materials manufactured in Russia. The rocket differs from all previous models in its digital control system, which helps adjust its trajectory more accurately. Plesetsk has been the site of Russia's GLONASS satellite launches since February 26, 2011, when the first new generation GLONASS-K spacecraft was put into orbit by Soyuz-2.1 medium booster. Until that time, all GLONASS-K satellites were launched on Proton rockets from Baikonur Cosmodrome. GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the Russian equivalent to the US Global Positioning System (GPS), with its network providing real-time positioning and speed data for land, sea, and airborne receivers.

Russia's New Angara Space Rocket Test Flight Successful - Defense Ministry

MOSCOW, July 9 (RIA Novosti) – Russia's new Angara rocket, powered by engines using so- called "green" fuels, successfully completed its suborbital test flight Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said. "Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin on the first successful test launch of the Angara-1.2PP rocket," the ministry's statement reads. The rocket lifted off from the Plesetsk space center in northern Russia at approximately 2:00 p.m. Moscow time [10.00 a.m. GMT]. After a 20-minute flight, the rocket's second stage and a dummy payload impacted the Kura testing range on Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula some 5,700 kilometers away from the launch site. Angara is the first new carrier rocket to be developed by Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union. Angara's maiden launch, initially scheduled for June 25, was delayed until June 27, and then until June 28. The June 28 launch attempt was aborted automatically 19 seconds before the launch. The Angara family of rockets, in development since 1995, is planned to be built in light, semi- heavy and heavy versions to lift a variety of payloads between two and 40 metric tons into low earth orbit. Angara is designed to complement the country's venerable Soyuz rocket, currently the only vehicle in the world capable of launching astronauts to the International Space Station.

Russia to focus on Moon, Mars exploration, repeat Phobos-Grunt mission

MOSCOW, August 02, /ITAR- TASS/. Russian scientists will focus on Moon and Mars exploration and repeat the Phobos-Grunt mission in the next decade, Space Research Institute Director Lev Zeleny said on Saturday. "The Moon and Mars are our priority for 2016-2025," he said at the 40th COSPAR Scientific Assembly underway in Moscow on August 2-10. The Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) in partnership with the European Space Agency will be carrying out two stages of the ExoMars mission in 2016 and 2018. In 2016, Roscosmos is planning to join Europe and Japan in the BepiColombo project. In 2017, it will orbit the Spektr- RG telescope and send a Russian rover, Luna-Globe, to the Moon in 2019, for the first time in years. An UV observatory is to be launched in 2020; an orbiting module and a dropship are scheduled to be sent to the Moon in 2012 and 2023, respectively. After thoroughly testing lunar and Martian technologies, approximately in 2024, Russia, may repeat its Phobos-Grunt mission to Mars' satellite Phobos to collect its soil and bring it back to Earth. Russia is planning a manned mission to the Moon in 2030-2031, Roscosmos First Deputy Head Alexander Ivanov said in July. "In our programme this [manned mission to the Moon] is scheduled for 2020-2031. This programme [Federal Space Programme for 2016-2025] is being coordinated now," he said. When asked when the first settlement might be built on the Moon, Ivanov said this question was much more complex and needed additional attention.
