Future of space travel

Russian scientists claimed a world first after successfully testing a new full-size Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE) in Khimki on Friday. Footage release by the Fund of Perspective Research shows a video of the engine testing and firing using detonation waves to ignite the fuel and oxidizer. The shots were recorded by cameras set up inside the test lab of NPO Energomash, a major Russian rocket engine manufacturer.

The PDE is considered to be the next generation of engines that use environmental friendly fuel while being more effective than traditional jet engines. Its thermodynamic efficiency is higher than that of turbojets and turbofans and, theoretically, a PDE can operate from subsonic up to a hypersonic flight speeds.

ISS: Expedition 48 crew touches down in Kazakhstan

Two Russian cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut have safely landed early Wednesday morning in the Kazakhstan steppes, thus finishing a 170-day mission in space.

The crew of three – Aleksey Ovchinin, Oleg Skripochka and Jeffrey Williams – on Tuesday left the International Space Station (ISS) as the Soyuz TMA-20M spacecraft undocked from the ISS at 21:51 GMT.

The Soyuz spacecraft has landed 148 kilometers (92 miles) from the town of Zhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. According to Russia's Mission Control Center (MCC), the landscape in the area is mostly flat, with no forests, large bodies of water or populated areas.

“The crewmembers’ state of health is normal. The space travelers who have returned to Earth will undergo a medical check-up, after which Aleksey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka will be brought to Star City by plane, while Jeffrey Williams will take a flight to the US,” Russia's Mission Control Center (MCC) told RIA Novosti.

The crew, which was part of the Expedition 48, spent over 170 days in space. Their estimated time flying back to Earth was around three hours.

A total of 200 military personnel, 12 specially equipped Mi-8 helicopters, four Antonov An-12 and An-26 aircrafts, along with a number of other special machinery took part in the search and rescue operation.

Meanwhile, three other space adventurers, Russia's Anatoly Ivanishin, American Kathleen Rubins and Japan's Takuya Onishi will stay on the ISS, until the next expedition arrives.

Russia's chief of military intelligence, Igor Korobov, dies after illness

In October he was reported to have fallen ill after coming under heavy criticism for failings by the agency.

Michael Carpenter, a Russia adviser for Barack Obama’s administration, tweeted on Thursday: “His predecessor died in 2016 of a heart attack. Life expectancy for incumbents of this job is pretty low, but then so is the median life expectancy in Russia.”l

Looks more like terminated early to save the "Fatherland." The GRU lately has been acting erratically all over the World and embarassing Putin with its clumsiness.

Russia Admits Mysterious Missile Engine Explosion Involved A Nuclear 'Isotope Power Source'

Russia's state-run nuclear corporation Rosatom says that a team of its employees had been working on an experimental "isotope power source" when it exploded, killing five people and injuring three more in a still very mysterious accident yesterday. The company offered no specifics about the project, but this new information, coupled with other details, suggests that this power source may be associated with a nuclear-powered cruise missile called Burevestnik that the Kremlin first announced publicly last year.

The accident occurred near the village of Nyonoksa, also written Nenoksa, in the northwestern Russian region of Arkhangelsk on Aug. 8, 2019.

"The tragedy happened while working with the engineering and technical support of the isotope power source in a liquid propulsion system," Rosatom's statement reads. "Five employees ... were killed while testing a liquid propulsion system. Three of our colleagues received injuries and burns of varying severity."

Only goes to show that nuclear powered cruise missile or any nuclesr powered missile is a stupid idea. It's more a danger to the country that has it than its potential enemies. Especially given Russia's spotty quality record.

And of late Russian military ships or sites seem to have a penchant for involuntary destruction...

Russia Will "Briefly" Evacuate Village Near Site Of Nuclear-Powered Missile Accident

Five days after a still very mysterious explosion at a missile test site in northwestern Russia, authorities have announced what they say will be a brief evacuation of a small village nearby, despite saying this was unnecessary in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The announcement comes as evidence mounts that the accident involved a nuclear-powered cruise missile known as Burevestnik.

Russia Changes Position On Radiation Leaks Again Weeks After Nuclear Missile Explosion

Russia's state environmental monitoring agency has acknowledged the presence of four radioactive substances in Severodvinsk, a city less than 20 miles from the site of a still very mysterious explosion during the test of an unspecified nuclear-powered missile. The new details continue to suggest the incident was related to the development of the nuclear-powered cruise missile Burevestnik, but they also raise further questions about how transparent the Kremlin is being about the scale of the accident that killed at least seven people.

An explosion rocked a Russian research facility known for housing the smallpox virus

Smallpox virus virions. Credit: Fred Murphy / Sylvia Whitfield / CDC.

An explosion Monday caused a fire at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology, a biological research facility in Siberia known for being one of the two centers in the world housing samples of live smallpox virus. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta is the only other place known to maintain live samples of the deadly pathogen.
