Development of the Russian SOSNA-R laser-guided surface-to-air missile (SAM) system is nearing completion, according to Russia's Nudelman Precision Engineering Design Bureau.

The system consists of an upgraded MT-LB multi-purpose tracked armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) chassis fitted with a turret supporting a total of 12 SOSNA-R (9M337) laser guided SAMs in the ready-to-launch position.

Between the two banks of six missiles are situated two advanced electro-optical packages for acquisition, tracking and laser guidance, which are claimed to be usable under almost all weather conditions. An automatic target tracker is also fitted.

Once the target has been confirmed as hostile it is automatically tracked and the two-stage SOSNA-R solid-propellant SAM is launched when it comes within range.

During the first stage of its flight the missile is radio command-guided; the booster then falls away and the front missile is guided to the target by a laser beam. Initial target information can also be provided by an external source such as a surveillance radar.

its a good news for the laser sam technology but i am not sure about it being hypersonic as the max speed is approx mach 4 or 3.6 to be specific here are some parameters.

Performance: Ceiling 3,500 m (11,483 ft), Max Range 8,000 m (26,247 ft), Min Range 1,300 m (4,265 ft), Target's Min Altitude 2 m (7 ft), Top Speed 1,200 mps (Mach 3.61)

G Loads: Max Maneuvering Load Factor 52 g

i hope india can include such a technology for its pad/aad system in the long run it will be highly capable air -defence system

A very fascinating report on Russian SOSNA-R Hypersonic SAM, seems to me very capable one.

Any picture available Invi?

I suppose this is going to be a good replacement for the TOR-M1 and the Tunguska air defense system.

AAD: Sosna nears production

The Sosna mobile short-range air-defence system will complete its firing trials later this year and production will start for India in 2015, according to Dr Vladimir Slobodchikov, the managing director of technical sciences at Russia's Nudelman Precision Engineering Design Bureau (KBtochmash). "There is a final series of trials that will happen in October," he told IHS Jane's at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) show held in Pretoria on 17-21 September. Slobodchikov described the Sosna as the "the last line of defence" against aircraft, precision weapons, and lightly armoured ground targets. It uses the same Sosna-R two- stage missile that is used with the company's Palma naval air defence system, which is in service with the Russian and Vietnamese navies. This had a range of between 1 and 10 km, Slobodchikov said, and carried two warheads, together weighing 7 kg, and two fuzes. The first rod-fragmentation warhead was to destroy proximity targets, while the second fragmentation warhead was for destroying targets on impact. Each Sosna vehicle had 12 ready- to-fire missiles and could be reloaded in 12 minutes, Slobodchikov said. The missile is radio-command guided when in its boost phase, after which a laser beam riding guidance system takes over. The optical fire-control system makes the Sosna highly survivable, effective in cluttered environments, and difficult to jam, according to KBtochmash.
