Russian Military Equipment 85 Percent Obsolete: Russian President

Eighty-five percent of the equipment used in the Russian Army is obsolete, President Dmitry Medvedev told high-ranking military officials during a meeting in Moscow, Interfax news agency reported Friday.

Medvedev, in particularly, mentioned the situation with outdated telecommunications equipment.

"Eighty percent of the cables used by military must be replaced," he said. "Quality of telecommunications in the Army is no-go."

Medvedev also told the Defense Ministry's leadership that analog telecommunications equipment should be replaced with digital technology.

Medvedev, who also is the commander-in-chief, last year demanded a speedy modernization of the Army. According to a state program adopted in 2007, new equipment was to be delivered to every army unit by 2015, with priority given to the North Caucasus military district.

Not really, India buys more Russian equipment than they do.
